The townspeople honestly think that the animals accept their "sacrifice" to keep their town safe! And the scariest part? They may actually be right...

The simple fact that a jellyfish is affected, in itself, is Fridge Nightmare Fuel for anyone with a grounding in basic biology. If even cnidarians are susceptible, that means no motile animal on Earth is exempt, because they're about as distantly-related to vertebrates as a member of Kingdom Animalia can get short of being a sponge.
Diaspora:
Abe and Dariela are shown a video from Reiden Global talking of how they think they can use children in a "pilot program" to figure out a cure. As soon as she starts on "protective custody," the two shove back the soldier in the room and take off outside. They see Isaac in a caged truck packed with children his age, helplessly watching as it drives off.
