Nightmare Fuel / Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Despite the Played for Laughs scenario, some of the monsters are genuinely frightening.

  • The Chainsaw Maniacs, they have the unpleasant tendency to chase you into more of them. There is also the fact that they can cut through walls to get to you or the neighbors. Notably, they are the only human enemy in the game apart from some football players in one or two levels, who are probably unintentionally harming you while you are out on their field. These guys are just as bad as the monsters and aliens in the game, and will cut up a baby with a chainsaw if they see one.
  • There are both Chainsaw Maniacs and traditional ax-wielding Evil Dolls. The sounds of a chainsaw revving offscreen coupled with insane children's laughter serve to keep you awake at night.
  • Dr Tongue's spider form is unnerving because it is one of the most durable bosses in the game, and you defeat him by blowing out its eyes.
  • Go ahead, let someone die... OUCH!
  • The American box art. While the game itself has a pretty cartoonish aesthetic, the box features creepy live action zombies with a gross pale-green complexion.
  • The giant ants are, well, giant ants, and they look strangely more realistic than the majority of the game's enemies, coupled with a fast, skittery walk that gives them a bit of a legitimately creepy, Unintentional Uncanny Valley look when compared to everything else you fight. Add to that their ability to easily chase you down, since they can just walk right over most walls, have high speed (the red ones in particular move exactly as fast as you do), and high durability to most weapons - and you'll probably start feeling a little worried whenever you go back to earlier levels and realize that many of the holes you pass look EXACTLY like their spawn points.
  • The 'Hyde' status effect which occurs randomly from drinking a mystery potion. Once triggered, the life loss fanfare plays, the weapon selection is temporarily replaced with a skull and crossbones icon, and your character turns into a garishly color inverted, uncontrollable Superpowered Evil Side who actively targets and kills any neighbors in the nearest vicinity (or your partner if in a 2 player game) for the duration the status is active. It can be a surprisingly startling Jump Scare for any first time players not expecting it.
