  • Death by arsenic poisoning is violent and terribly painful. Uncle Julian only took a little bit of arsenic-laced sugar and barely survived, his health having been shattered. Then we find out that ten year old Thomas took the most sugar on his blackberries...
  • There are hints in the book that although Merricat was the instigator of the murders, Constance not only helped cover it up but actively contributed to their success by intentionally delaying calling the doctor until it was too late. She also calmly washed the sugar pot while her family was violently dying in the dining room and later told the police she believed her family deserved to die. This either reveals that Constance is not too different than Merricat, or that something terrible was going on in that house, and it pushed both sisters to extremes.
