Nightmare Fuel / Unhinged (2020)

Go To

Despite what people think about the main characters, there are a few scenes in Unhinged that can be legitimately terrifying...

  • The Terrifying and Paranoia-Inducing plot of a deranged man terrorizing a woman over a minor infraction can trigger PTSD in people who have been victims of stalking, abuse, and attempted murder. It doesn't help that The Man also went after Rachel's friends and loved ones (including her own son) just for knowing her.
  • The Man himself. Russell Crowe is absolutely terrifying as a cruel, violently deranged psychopath who is willing to end lives over something as trivial as being honked at. Even worse is how manipulative he can be, as shown when he fools Andy into believing he is Rachel’s friend and politely chatting with him, before brutally murdering him minutes later.
  • The opening scene, where the Man very calmly breaks into his ex-wife's house, kills both her and her boyfriend, and sets the house on fire, which causes it to explode as the Man drives away.
  • The Man rams a cop to spin him out. The cop is in the middle of calling for backup when, out of nowhere, a cement mixer utterly flattens his cruiser.
  • The Man's murder of Mary, if only due to how sadistic and unnecessary it was. Throughout the film, most of The Man's carnage was due to pure rage. Not only does he lay a vicious beating on Mary for literally no reason, he then kills her by pushing her repeatedly against a knife Fred was holding, while The Man blames Fred for her death. It's the point the truly establishes The Man as a misogynistic sadist.
  • The above mentioned scene where the Man murders Andy in a coffee shop. It starts with the Man manipulating Andy into thinking he's a friend of Rachel's, and tricking him into calling her and then letting the Man talk to her. Once he realizes that Tom Cooper is clearly not a friend of Rachel's, he politely tries to take his phone back, and the Man responds by shattering a coffee mug into his face. It comes out of nowhere, and it's terrifying how the Man is able to brutally beat up and then murder Andy in public with such ease. Knowing full well that no one will do anything about it least they get killed by his hands as well.
  • The final fight Between The Man and Rachel is brutal, with him throwing her across the room, before trying to savagely throttle Kyle to death with a power cord, while showing no remorse or hesitation.
  • The Man trying to rise up one last time, even with a pair of scissors in his fucking eye, growling like a rabid animal.
