  • The moment when Death walks towards Block with his cape wide open could be seen as quite silly until you realize that it means absolute nothingness for the titular hero.
  • When Jöns' asks his way to a man who is revealed to be long dead, his corpse is devoid of eyes.
  • The flagellants. Just, the flagellants. Their black scars, being half-naked while whipping themselves to blood, sick and in total despair, sure sends some chill down the spine. Even more horrible if you consider that it happened in real life, the EXACT SAME WAY.
  • Jöns "branding" Raval (the theologian) is quite unexpected and impressive, mostly because when Jöns appears, everyone in the tavern becomes silent. Though we see Raval later in the film and he isn't particularly deformed, Jöns could have thought of branding him by bursting his eyes.
  • The scene with the mad young girl condemned to be burned alive. Rendered even more nightmarish by Jöns' comment about the look on her eyes when she's about to die:
Jöns: Who will take care of that child? Is it the angels or God or Satan or just emptiness? Emptiness, Sire.
    Block: It can't be so!
Jöns: Look at her eyes, her poor consciousness is perceiving something. Emptiness under the moon.
    Block: No!
Jöns: We stand powerless with hanging arms, as we see what she sees. Our fears and hers are the same.
  • The scene where Raval (a theologian who convinced Block to join the crusade) reappears and is revealed to be dying from the plague. While he is a rather despicable character who tried to rape the mute girl and get Jof into trouble just for the fun of it earlier in the film, it's still is rather terrifying to see him trembling from pain, begging for his life, shouting how he is afraid to die and finally his screams of pain as he finally dies without any of the characters able to help him. Also, the voice of the actor gives the impression that the plague is eating him from inside.
Raval: I'm scared of dying! I don't want to die, I don't want to! I'm going to die... I... I... What's going to happen to me? Can't you even comfort me? Haven't you got any mercy? Can't you see that I... Is there no help? Can't I have any water? HELP ME! AAAAH! AAAAAAAAAH!! (falls, dead).
    • And then Jöns' speech to the mute who wants to give him water:
Jöns: It's useless, it's useless, it's utterly useless.
  • The scene in the castle dining room, where Block's wife reads from the Book of Revelation, but as soon as she finishes, all sound except the storm outside are silenced, as the characters all look up from their prayer, and see that Death himself is standing in the doorway, come to claim them at last. And this time, there is no escape.
    • The iconic Danse Macabre that Jof sees on the horizon, the single most famous shot in the entire movie, and possibly one of the most iconic scenes in all of cinema.
Jof: Death leads them away, away from the dawn. Into the dark, unknown country...
