Nightmare Fuel / Rakenzarn Tales

Caution: Unmarked spoilers ahead!

Rakenzarn Tales may be first and foremost a funny and lighthearted game, but it also contains several examples of Nightmare Fuel.

  • Kyuu's first dream sequence, where he is trapped in a child's bedroom. With creepy drawings, creepy notes, creepy toys and a creepy music to keep him company. It gets creepier after the infamous door puzzle. When Kyuu walks down the hallway, you can hear a distinct voice whisper, "I can see you."
  • The Assassin. An Ax-Crazy Blood Knight Professional Killer who craves murder and finds a disturbing pleasure in her own pain, she has been hired to kill Kyuu and does everything in her power to fullfill her contract. She's incredibly strong, shows no mercy and never surrenders. Before the Kandur Arc, she was the biggest Knight of Cerebus (or, at least, one of the biggest).
  • Corroder is a Serial Killer who uses acid to slowly murder his victims, and is a stark contrast with his more cartoonish allies in the Da'Fur Arc.
  • Deathstroke, if only for how powerless the heroes (minus Deadpool) are against him. When he arrives during the battle of Furude Shrine, he casually stabs Noel, completely dominates Mana in their fight, and forces Kyuu to fight him alone - the boy is barely able to survive until Deadpool's arrival. This mercenary isn't The Dreaded for nothing.
  • The effects of the plague in Kandur: People are slowly going mad with paranoia and are attacking each other. The infected village is covered by a thick fog while unnerving music plays, and the enemies have far more creepy and sometimes downright disgusting designs. The Kandur Arc is Darker and Edgier and isn't afraid to show it.
    • Goka City, Kandur's main town, is even more unnerving. The Knights are barely able to contain the infected citizens and Kyuu can find several dead bodies in the streets. Goes up to eleven in Goka City's Hospital, with its not-so-friendly ghosts, pools of blood and creepy music.
  • The Inn of Evil sidequest. Especially when we learn what happened to the missing clients - they were brutally murdered and eaten by giant mutated insects. Check the Fridge Horror entry for more details.
  • The first Bad Ending, even though it's followed with a huge case of Mood Whiplash. Kite gives an Apocalyptic Log entry on how all of Rakenzarn was crippled in an invasion six months ago since no one else could destroy the Plague Cores. Almost of all of the world's heroes are dead and the enemy is about to destroy the capital. And it ends with Kite desperately wondering why Kyuu has abandoned them...
  • Upon reflection, it can be unnerving to see how easily and how quickly the Morning Glory Guild is able to heavily damage the reputation of a person or an entire guild - every time one of their brigades is shown, its members are abusing their power, bullying someone or trying to frame someone, and yet they haven't been disbanded and retain much of their power and good standing.
