Mystery Case Files started off pretty light at first, but slowly became creepier and creepier.

Unmarked spoilers below!

    open/close all folders

    Prime Suspects
  • The Creepy Mask item at Mick's Gas.
  • The Abandoned Hospital. Includes a mannequin strapped to an operating table, a lamb in a cage begging for help, nasty surgical tools, and creepy diagrams of the human body. Pierce Hart a.k.a. "Doctor Defect" operates here. He has been convicted of medical malpractice.
  • The Tunnel of Terror. A roller coaster that goes through the gaping mouth of a giant, angry, evil clown head. Inside there are chained skeletons along with various other creepy details. On top of that, it was all built by a man who deliberately makes his rides dangerous to add to the fear factor.
  • One of the suspects, Ronny Tidwell, a.k.a. "Big Iron Ronny" was a wrestler who bit his opponent's thumb off during a match. Fortunately, he seems to have calmed down with his new career in street performing.
    Ravenhearst
  • Charles sure liked to collect some pretty creepy items. The gas mask in the attic and the "How to Poison Your Wife" book in the Workshop stand out.
  • The ghostly music and sound effects that play are pretty disturbing. The music sounds foreboding and gives the player the feeling they really shouldn't be there. Occasionally, you will hear a woman hiss and scream. It becomes increasingly apparent that it's Emma's ghost, as she repeatedly whispers such things as "This is not my home," "Find the pages," and—most chillingly of all—"Save yourself..." It gets unsettling after a while.
    • It goes From Bad to Worse during the final level, when the player has to search the entire house to find the seven skeleton keys needed to unlock the seal on Emma's prison. Not only does she now whisper constantly as you frantically look in each scene, but a new, deep, and altogether demonic voice joins hers, either growling or shouting "THAT IS NOT YOURS." It's Charles. And he's coming for you.
  • There's a monitor in the Surveillance Room that shows nothing but static. But suddenly, a close-up of a decayed Emma's skull will flash across the screen with a horrifying sound.
  • The diary entry that shows Emma being murdered. Charles has the most furious, psychotic look on his face, roughly grabbing Emma, and with an axe in his other hand. Her death must have been horrible.
  • Emma's remains in the shrine Charles built for her. The player slowly takes the lid off her coffin, and are greeted by a Scare Chord and the sight of Emma's skeleton. It looks like it's screaming.
    Madame Fate
  • Each one of the carnival workers you investigate to study with Madame Fate's crystal ball wind up dead in some horrific ways, and even though you don't see the whole picture almost all of them feature the horrified look on the suspect's face just before dying. Made infinitely easier or worse from Madame Fate being a complete Jerkass and making fun of each and every one.
    • Some special mentions include: the Bearded Lady having her neck sliced open with a straight razor, with only her shorn beard covering the wound, Art the Carny suffocating to death by having so many cigarettes shoved into his mouth that his jaw is visibly dislocated, contortionist Twyla Tangle being caught in a washing machine and dying while desperately trying to escape, and Lance the sword swallower, who has a sword jammed down his throat so far the crossguard is bulging out the skin on either side of his neck.
    • Franco's probably takes the cake. He's so hungry he eats a horse and you can see one of its legs sticking out of its mouth. To make it even worse, this is Madame Fate's son and she doesn't care if he dies!
  • The ending in some way features this. After every suspect is found to be dead by midnight, Madame Fate (and yourself) realize that you were the person who's responsible for her death all along because of a shadow of death followed you into the carnival. She guides you into one last puzzle to find out what and why this is happening, and when you complete the puzzle the screen dissolves to white as you hear Madame Fate give out a bloodcurdling scream as the true killer murders her, then towers over her slumped-over corpse to vow revenge on you for events from the previous game.
    • That's not even mentioning who this killer is. It's the spirit of Charles Dalimar, the murderer of Emma Ravenhearst from the third game, who followed you all the way to Fate's Carnival from Ravenhearst Manor to try and kill you as well as the carnies in a fit of rage.
