As the series that inspired titles such as Attack on Titan, it's no wonder that Muv-Luv Alternative has some horrifying things in store.

  • The first time the BETA finally shows up is this in spades. After only seeing silhouettes and glimpses throughout the entirety of Unlimited, having Takeru retain his memories, skills and physical abilities lulled the player (and Takeru) into a false sense of security as things in Alternative has been going relatively well thus far... until the BETA attacked the base in all their horrifying glory, decimating most squads in minutes and showing both Takeru and the player just why humanity is losing against the BETA. The alarm ringing constantly, squads asking for artillery and back-ups that either won't come or come too late, and Takeru going berserk just makes it even worse.
  • If the above wasn't enough to horrify you, then what follows after certainly will. Takeru and Marimo were having a heart-to-heart, which is extremely heartwarming and serves as a nice cooldown after the intensity of the BETA attacks. Takeru wants to thank Marimo for comforting him, so he turns around, oddly noting her silence and lack of rebuttal of him calling her "Marimo-chan"... only to see a BETA chomping on her head in an extremely brutal and gory detail. It was so sudden and horrifying in what's supposed to be a calm and heartwarming moment that it not only traumatized poor Takeru, but also many players who went in blind, showing that in this game, Anyone Can Die and establishing the BETA as a terrifying threat far more effectively than any kind of exposition could ever hope to achieve.
  • Crossing the Despair Event Horizon after the above, Takeru is understandably terrified and called it quits, returning to the EXTRA world and convincing himself that he had done more than enough in the Alternative world. It seems at first that Takeru will be able to heal and recuperate in his home world, even managing to cry and gain some closure with EXTRA!Marimo... until she's found dead the next morning, her head crushed by a meat grinder, and it is here Takeru learned from Yuuko that he's bringing the consequences from Alternative back with him.
    • Hell, seeing the normally calm and composed Yuuko freaking out and demanding that Takeru takes responsibility for his actions is scary too, especially when she's the only one in the know about his circumstances in Alternative.
    • Making it even worse is the fact that people starts to forget about Takeru as time goes on; seeing Meiya not recognizing Takeru is awful, and even Sumika, who had promised not to forget him and seemingly able to keep that promise, forgets about him too the following day after an extremely tearful and heartwarming episode they shared the previous day. Seeing someone you've spent your whole life with forgetting about you is such an existential horror.
    • As if having Marimo died in both worlds and everyone in EXTRA forgets about him isn't bad enough, Sumika the proceeds to get crushed by a falling basketball's backboard not long after the above. After the amount of trauma and horrifying things that has happened to him, it's really no wonder that Takeru essentially gives up and wants to commit suicide.
  • The BETA during the Sadogashima Hive Operation start to exhibit strange and unusual patterns, which cause terror to the invading forces. First of all, the BETA start digging tunnels to collapse and trap the Orbital Divers in the Hive, killing them, and then the Fort-Class start protecting the Heavy-Laser class, which is noted to be unusual.
  • The Reveal that the brain in the jar is, in fact, all that remained from Alternative Sumika. What happened to her is so horrific that text won't be able to accurately describe the sheer horror the BETA inflicted on her.
  • Haruka Suzumiya's death. While she was trying to reboot the reactor, the Asian guard from the beginning of the game gets decapitated and Suzumiya sees his severed head being carried by a Soldier-class BETA. While you only see the gore from your cockpit, the bloodstain on the wall is clearly messy.
  • The beginning of Operation Ouka is a slaughterfest on its own. While Takeru and the orbital fleet prepared their descent, the Laser-class opened fire on the fleet, and Takeru is powerless to do anything about it. In desperation to make sure the operation succeeds, the shuttles throw themselves into the path of the Laser-class to make sure that the Valkyries make it to Kashgar unharmed. It's implied that every other Orbital Diver was slaughtered before Takeru and his squadron even made it into the hive.
  • The Superordinate revealing the number of BETA hives that exist in the universe is this in spades, as well as showing Tamase's corpse.
  • The anime shows no qualms about how brutal the BETA invasion is on the pointview of civilians. From TSFs and soldiers being mauled by Fort-class BETA to supposedly safe civilians being gruesomely massacred by the Soldier-classes, all with gore and flying body parts. No wonder this assault affected Komaki's perspective. And remember the anime toned down the gore...a bit.
