Mashed is an animation channel that is well known for doing dark takes on beloved video game franchises and these examples are no exceptions.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog gets thrown into the deep dark nightmare pool a lot on this channel.
    • The most infamous example is the Secret History of Sonic and Tails where in this video, Tails is portrayed as an obsessive stalker towards Sonic and he ends up killing both Knuckles and Shadow when the both of them became close friends towards Sonic. It later on culminates in Tails nearly killing Amy until both Amy and Sonic find out about what Tails has been doing and Sonic yells at Tails that they were never friends. This then leads to Tails to think that the Sonic in front of him is not the real Sonic and he throws Amy's hammer (that he set up to explode) at Sonic, causing the hammer to explode on impact.
      • The ending is just chilling as it shows an overly obese Tails torturing and mutilating an innocent man after he escapes from Sonic and Amy.
    • There's Something About Amy (Part 1) starts off being a bit Lighter and Softer than Secret History of Sonic and Tails. However, as the short goes on, Amy starts to lose a bit of her sanity as she tries to get Sonic to notice her, while every attempt to do so only ended up driving Sonic away from her. At the end, Tails suggests to "change" Amy, an offer she accepts without a second thought: while she's sobbing on the ground, the background suddenly becomes black, then two hands come from nowhere to grab her... only revealing to be Tails' who accepts to "help" her. The offer in question is Tails doing some body surgery on Amy (which he does like he would fix a machine) and Nothing Is Scarier is in full effect as we don't see the final results of Amy's operation.
      • There’s also the fact that Tails is clearly manipulating Amy. For what reason no answer is revealed yet. But through Part 1 he’s egging her on and encouraging her pursuit of Sonic under the guise of a cheerful helpful friend.
      • There's one moment in the short where after she insulted Sonic (due to Tails' advice), Amy sports a pretty disturbing (and/or funny, depending on your tastes) Nightmare Face at minute 5:12 where her eyes went totally black with white eyeballs staring out of the screen.
    • There's Something About Amy (Part 2) is even Darker and Edgier than the first part: it starts on Sonic suddenly waking up as he hears somebody breaking in his house... and falls over a dinner table for two full of chili dogs. He then sees a Sexy Silhouette in the shadows who reveals to be Amy, whom we finally see after her operation, and she undergoes quite a bit of Body Horror. While she's taller and curvier, and even wears a new dress which shows her new cleavage (something pretty disturbing in its own right when you consider she's only twelve), her new appearance is quite nightmarish as she's wearing dark makeup and she has scars on her arms from having her limbs being taken apart and reattached to make her taller. This causes her appearance to resemble a Frankenstein-like monster. As the short progresses, Amy starts ungoing Sanity Slippage as she tries desperately to tell Sonic that what she did to herself was what Sonic wanted, even though Sonic is clearly terrified during this whole ordeal. Then the short climaxes with Amy murdering Sonic after Sonic rejected her due to her nightmarish appearance and her insanity.
      • Her dialogues throughout Part 2 swing between realizing that something is wrong with her situation and clinging to the delusion that this is what she thinks that Sonic wanted, as well as trying to convince herself that she changed her body for the best, despite the fact that it clearly caused her a lot of pain. This horrifically shows just how Amy is slowly losing her sanity throughout the short.
Amy: It hurt so much... and took everything I had, but I’m better now. I’m perfect! YOUR PERFECT GIRL!
Amy: I’m better now! I’m a butterfly! I’m finally beautiful! You... need to love me NOOOOOW!
Amy: STOP FIGHTING ME! IT WAS ALL FOR YOU SONIC! HE TWISTED ME, HURT ME, AND HE WOULD’VE BROKEN ME! BUT IT WAS ALL SO WE COULD BE TOGETHER!
    • The scene where Amy murders Sonic. The animation, specifically at minute 2:26-2:52, when she does break down and violently snap is also nightmarish. First, it’s black and white, then it becomes white outlines against a black void, then when she grabs the hammer and starts killing him, it turns into this disturbingly bright neon almost like a negative photo image as she keeps bludgeoning him to death. And then after Amy bludgeons Sonic to death, she suddenly snaps out of her insanity and looks on in horror and sadness at what she has done. It's heavily implied that Amy wasn't really in control of herself during her encounter with Sonic.
      • Throughout the short, Amy is constantly making disturbing Nightmare Face and her facial expressions get even more terrifying as the short goes on as her sanity slides further downwards. The page image happens as a Jump Scare.
      • Nothing Is Scarier is in effect yet again as we end on Amy’s expression of shock, presumably to a revived Sonic though we won’t know for sure.
    • There's Something About Amy Part 3 continues the nightmare fuel where it left off. What's unsettling about the way that the short started out was that Tails seems entirely apathetic to what Amy did to Sonic and offers to help her bury him. It's a bit unsettling that Tails seems to not really care about the death of his best friend and it only makes his motives seem more disturbing as the short goes on.
      • As Amy goes on about how she and Sonic could have been happy together, Tails then starts Laughing Mad and he suddenly reveals that he manipulated both Sonic and Amy to ensure that they wouldn't get together. This scene becomes very disturbing due to lots of Deranged Animation being used when both Amy and Tails are talking with each other back and forth. This is the point where things REALLY start going From Bad to Worse.
      • When Amy starts breaking down due to Tails' confession, Tails reveals something shocking. He isn't that universe's Tails at all as his voice starts shifting into a familiar demented tone while he's goading Amy on.
      • The discovery of the REAL Tails's corpse, as Secret History Tails's Mask of Sanity slowly falls off Amy hits something with her shovel. Tails response to that sound is a very unnerving "Exquisite Timing". When Amy removes the dirt she finds Tails's heavily decomposed head, then fake Tails's Sinister Silhouettes turns 180º degrees with a cat smile that turns into a Slasher Smile.
      • After the "Tails" of that universe reveals himself to be the "Tails" from the "Secret History of Sonic and Tails" short, Amy immediately jumps at him and tries to strangle him to death. But, Secret History Tails is able to prevent Amy from strangling him to death by telling her that he can bring her to the "real" Sonic if they work together and Amy ends up going along with his plans.
      • At the very end of the short, Secret History Tails turns to the camera and says in a very creepy manner:
Secret History Tails: What are friends for?
      • There's another layer of horror here; the fact that Secret History Tails was able to so effectively pretend to be the real deal, without giving anything away. Despite the fact that he's a very obviously unhinged lunatic in his home universe, he was able to pass as not just normal, but outright friendly for God only knows how long. But considering how decomposed the real Tails' body was, it was likely a good while.
    • There's Something About Amy (Part 4)gave us a new look at how sick and insane Tails is. The machine that he built wasn't just to transport him and Amy to a new world, but to destroy her's, draining the life from the planet as it's disintegrating in the air.
      • You can also see the bodies of Knuckles and Big all lifeless.
    • Sonic Vs Rule 34 is another nightmare inducing one wherein Eggman blasts Sonic with a device that eventually overloads his mind with all the Rule 34 stuff imaginable and it kills him…until the sequel shows he’s actually in a coma but still trapped inside his mind. And it continues getting weirder from there.
    • Sonic's Metal Nightmare. (Are we sensing a theme here?) The whole mess starts with Sonic and Metal Sonic being confused for the other after an explosion. While Metal Sonic is safe with Tails, Amy and Knuckles, normal Sonic is "repaired", put through the grinder as Eggman's tool and... pleasure bot. Course before that happens he bolts and runs into his metal counterpart. A game of Spot the Imposter ensues and the real Sonic loses and is brought back to Eggman for his usual "Wednesday servicing".
      • There's also the implication that each group knew they got the wrong Sonicnote  but since he was acting like such a douche in the beginning, they didn't mind having the robot duplicate around, plus Eggman could exact his kind of revenge on the hedgehog.
  • Sonic's not the only one to go through the nightmare wringer on this channel, though he is a popular choice. Super Mario Bros. is another franchise given the nightmare treatment.
    • Luigi’s Nightmare is one string of nightmare fuel for Luigi as he comes to the realization the Mushroom Kingdom isn’t real but merely a product of his drug induced imagination and his real life is living in squalor with Mario who OD’d sometime during his second “trip” into the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Waluigi's massacre on Mystery Inc when they try to help Shaggy in One Jump Man vs Shaggy Ball Z 3.
    • Velma: Teleported to another planet to die from lack of oxygen.
    • Scrappy: Blasted by the Omega Beams.
    • Fred: Quartered by Waluigi's octopus arms.
    • Daphne: Bisected by one of Zoro's moves, then cubed.
    • Scooby: Vaporized by the Noisy Cricket.
    • On top of that, Waluigi poisoned all the food Shaggy ate to make sure he would win. When Luigi saves an ailing Shaggy, Waluigi takes it a step further by transforming into The Colossal Titan.
  • The entirety of the of the second half of Super Smash Bros: Blood Suckers: After Kirby consumes Dracula, he no longer is the adorable little pink puffball he once was. Now, he has become a demonic monster with bloodstained Scary Teeth who will consume anything in his path, immediately trying to devour Simon Belmont after he asks them if they were good. It only gets worse from here, as after Kirby consumes Simon's holy water, Kirby becomes a demonic god-like entity and viciously tears Simon apart and sends him to Hell. Then, Kirby consumes the entire planet. And then, the rest of the universe.
  • The second half of Cult of the Lamb: Doom and Shrooms becomes this. After making the mistake of making mushroom soup with hallucinogenic mushrooms, the Lamb's followers all have a bad trip and start attacking everything in sight, even the Lamb himself. Seeing as they cannot be reasoned, the Lamb has no choice but to summon a demon octopus to take them to another dimension.
