Mythology Gag / Splatterhouse

Go To

The Splatterhouse remake is made distinctively for the fans, and crams a mind-numbing amount of these into it, even the joke game Wanpaku Graffiti! They have certainly out-did themselves for this.

  • One of the first lines that the Terror Mask says to Rick is one to the intro of Splatterhouse 2 (and even gets a nice Call-Back later on):
    She doesn't have to die...
  • Some of the achievements are named for quotes from the original games, such as "Jen Smells of Rot... Of the Grave" and "Be the Garbage of Cesspool".
  • When you view the completed pictures of Jennifer in the game's menus, they have date and place labels; among the places the photos were taken are "Dark Stone Nightclub", "Mueller's Bar", and "Wanpaku Graffiti".
    • The game not only references the Dark Stone several times, but shows it during certain loading screens.
  • The Terror Mask bars your way to certain areas using images resembling its final form from Splatterhouse 3 to keep you on track.
    • Rick also vaguely resembles Mutant Rick when the Mask transforms him, most notably in Berserk Mode.
  • Early stages of the game have furniture flying at you magically, not unlike the second boss of the first game. The boss of the second level starts out similarly, before using the contents of the room to become a colossal golem of furniture and tentacles.
  • Pretty much the entire Biggy Man boss fight in the remake. The Terror Mask gets the sinking feeling Rick is going to get his ass handed to him. Rick proceeds to unload on him with the shotgun until Biggy Man goes into Phase 2.
Wait wait wait, I know this guy! ... yeah, we are screwed.
    • As a bonus, the elevator music playing right before Biggy Man is the first few notes from the ending theme of the first game.
  • When telling Rick how he and it aren't so different, the Terror Mask brings up that Rick used to be "a killer" in "different times, different games". This is a nod to the fact that Rick was going to be a serial killer chasing Jen in the original game.
  • When the Terror Mask tells Rick of his time on earth before West, Rick is the one who identifies the people the Mask met and protected as Aztecs. The Terror Mask will say that he always thought they were Mayans, who were said to have created the Mask in the first game.
  • The Scream Park features three bosses from the original games as part of the background: Hell Chaos (the final boss of Splatterhouse), Big Head (the glowing head from Splatterhouse 2), and the Giant Boreworm (from Splatterhouse 3).
  • Not only does Mirror Rick make a return, but now he has a red mask like in the TurboGrafx-16 version and had upgraded to the status of a boss fight.
    • Mirror Rick occasionally sends weaker duplicates of itself to fight Rick, in reference to the first game, where Mirror Ricks were just disposable Mooks as opposed to a full boss fight.
    • Speaking of the boreworms, they make an appearance, but are now nothing but tiny little things that you casually squish for extra blood, possibly in reference to Rick's visibly larger size. The Giant Boreworm also shows up. He's grown a lot since last we saw him.
  • In the past, you attempt to save Jennifer (who is actually the identical Leonora) from being burnt like a witch. Just as you reach her, she turns into a monster and attacks you. This is a reference to the original game, where she turns into a monster that you are forced to kill.
  • Ultimate Evil has a cameo as the heart of the Corrupted.
