Mythology Gag / Jaune Arc, Lord of Hunger

Go To

This page covers Mythology Gags in Jaune Arc, Lord of Hunger.

All spoilers are unmarked!

  • Jaune's family is stated to live in the town of Ansel and he mentions having a younger sister named Amber. Both are nods to Coeur Al'Aran's RWBY fanfics.
  • At the end of their sparring match, Nihilus and Alek engage in a variation of Beam-O-War by using Force Push against each other at the same time. This references a scene in Revenge of the Sith where Anakin and Obi-Wan do the same thing during their duel on Mustafar.
  • In "Initiation", Jaune uses the famous "I've got a bad feeling about this" line when he and Pyrrha are standing in front of the Death Stalker's cave.
  • Nora riding on top of a Grimm during her initiation to Beacon. While she rode atop an Ursa in canon, here she rides on a Death Stalker.
  • During Jaune's sparring match with Cardin, Pyrrha and Ruby are waving small "Team JNPR" pennants handmade by Blake. This is a reference to a scene from the RWBY episode "The Badge and the Burden, Part II", where Blake is shown waving a small "RWBY" pennant while watching Weiss fight a Boarbatusk.
  • Doctor Oobleck throwing Cardin's paper football back at him like a ninja star and having it stick into Cardin's desk references a scene from the third volume of RWBY where the Shopkeep throws Weiss's credit card at her in an identical manner when he discovers that her card is declined.
  • In "Malachor", Nora uses the line "a long, long time ago, on a planet far, far away" while telling her teammates her theories about aliens.
  • The food fight in "Hunger" ends with a victorious Jaune mentally paraphrasing the Sith Code before he is interrupted by Professor Goodwitch's arrival.
  • When JNPR and RWBY's food fight is broken up by Professor Goodwitch, Jaune tries to blame Ruby for starting the food fight, to which she reacts by yelling "Lies! Deception!"
  • Jaune's new outfit that he starts wearing in Chapter 11 is the garb of the Sith Assassins in Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.
  • After absorbing Jaune's Force lightning, Nora goes crazy (well, more crazy than usual) and screams "POWER! Unlimited power!".
  • During his rant against Professor Goodwitch in "Vytal", Jaune echoes Anakin's line to Obi-Wan from Revenge of the Sith and shouts "You underestimate my power!"
  • In Chapter 15, Ozpin describes Jaune as possessing "abilities that some would consider... unnatural".
  • The flashback in Chapter 15 where a younger Nihilus swears fealty to Darth Traya is almost a word-for-word reenactment of a scene from Revenge of the Sith when Anakin pledges his loyalty to Palpatine and joins the Sith.
Nihilus/Anakin: I pledge myself... to your teachings.
Darth Traya/Sidious: Good. [...] Henceforth, you shall be Darth... Vader/Nihilus.
    Nihilus/Anakin: Thank you... [my] Master.
    Darth Traya/Sidious: Rise.
  • The confrontation between Jaune and Pyrrha in "Destiny" is basically a retelling of the climax from Revenge of the Sith, with Jaune replacing Anakin and Pyrrha replacing Padmé. Jaune even uses the same lines as Anakin and his accusations of Pyrrha selling him out to Ozpin mirrors Anakin accusing Padmé of betraying him to Obi-Wan.
  • Later, when Jaune is cornered by his friends, he echoes Anakin's "you turned her against me" to Qrow. Qrow responds by using Obi-Wan's "you've done that yourself".
  • "Legends" starts with the phrase "A long time ago, in a galaxy ravaged by war...", which references the opening narration of the Star Wars movies.
  • During the Mexican Standoff between Alpha's team, Sando's Boys, and the Apex Society; Delta tells his team that they have a 37.20% of making it out of this situation unharmed, only for Beta to respond by saying "Never Tell Me the Odds!". This references a scene from The Empire Strikes Back where C-3PO tells Han Solo that their odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field are "3,720 to 1".
  • When Alixandre confronts Petros in "Legends", the latter addresses the former as general and tells him that he's a bold one. This is a reference to Revenge of the Sith, where Grievous says the same line to Obi-Wan Kenobi right before their duel.
  • In Chapter 20, Ironwood has to choose between ensuring the safety of the Relics and protecting the civilians during a major Grimm invasion, similar to when he learned that Salem was about to attack Atlas near the end of Volume 7. Like in canon, he ultimately chooses prioritizing the safety of the Relic over Vale's people.
  • During her mental conversation with Pyrrha in "Vengeance", Amber's advice regarding Jaune is to "let the past die" and "kill it, if [she] has to." These are the exact same words spoken by Kylo Ren to Rey after the throne room battle in The Last Jedi.
  • When Pyrrha tells Penny to remove the Mask of Nihilus from Jaune's face after Nihilus is seemingly subdued, Penny responds with "Roger roger!", a catchphrase for the Separatists' battle droids.
  • Darth Nihilus being defeated after he was severely weakened when a person he held a Force Bond with was killed references a player choice in Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords where they have the option of defeating Nihilus by killing their companion Visas.
