"The musical differences are obvious: the Go-Go's are more punk, while my solo work is more soft pop. But they're equally as fun and enjoyable for me. I couldn't possibly put one over the other."

Belinda Jo Carlisle (born August 17, 1958) is an American singer.

She started her music career in punk, serving as the drummer for The Germs. Her time with the band was brief, and she eventually left to found The Go-Go's, who would be considered one of the definitive New Wave Music bands.

After the band dissolved in 1985, she embarked on a solo career, releasing eight solo albums and a number of hit singles, including "Mad About You", "I Get Weak", "Circle in the Sand", "Leave a Light On" and what might be her signature song, "Heaven Is a Place on Earth".

Throughout her career, she suffered from drug and substance abuse, but nowadays has managed to remain sober, reinforced in part by her conversion to Buddhism.

Solo Discography:

  • Belinda (1986)
  • Heaven on Earth (1987)
  • Runaway Horses (1989)
  • Live Your Life Be Free (1991)
  • Real (1993)
  • A Woman and a Man (1996)
  • Voila (2007)
  • Wilder Shores (2017)

Carlisle's work provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: In the video for "Do You Feel Like I Feel?", Carlisle, her band and her backup dancers are depicted as skyscraper sized against the buildings around them while stock footage of panicking citizens is played between shots of them.
  • Hotter and Sexier: "Do You Feel Like I Feel?" has Carlisle in a skin tight PVC mini dress and fishnet.
  • Love Is Like Religion: "Heaven Is a Place On Earth" thanks to her lover.
  • New Wave Music: Her various bands helped define and refine the genre.
  • Truck Driver's Gear Change: Near the end of "Heaven Is a Place on Earth".
