Into the Spider-Verse
- At least one reviewer has turned Blond Peter’s ”I am so tired!” into a response shot whenever Geek Fandom decide to be butthurt about something inconsequensial.
- People decided to up the ante with the amount of Spider-Men in this movie by adding even more Spider-Men.
- In a sort of spin-off of similar memes from the likes of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and Cells at Work!, people are openly dreading the inevitable questionable fan-art of the young Animesque Peni Parker, even adopting a memetic phrase from the former to express their concerns:
- Taking any picture of multiple Spider-Men (most popularly◊) and claiming it's a still from the movie. The aforementioned still would later become a thousand times funnier as it turned out to be the post credits scene with that version of Spidey pointing at Miguel O'Hara.
- Hobo Uncle/Hobo Dad PeterExplanationDue to this movie's version of Peter being what is essentially being in worse state than most Peter Parkers, fans have taken a liking to him, due to being very different from most incarnations of Peter Parker. The movie openly calls him, in a manner mocking his more bombastic adjectives, "The Janky Old Broke Hobo Spider-Man" while other fans, on hearing of his frankly stupid life-choices call him Spider-Schmuck.
- With John Mulaney playing Spider-Ham, fan-art has taken to drawing the character quoting the hell out of Mulaney's memetic stand-up routines. "STREET SMARTS!"
- Nicolas Cage's line deliveries as Spider-Noir, especially "Hardcore Origin Story" and "crippling moral ambiguity", have already become this.
- "Hey" ExplanationThe scene where Miles attempts to woo Gwen with Aaron's advised shoulder touch. The amount of disastrous Cringe Comedy stemming from this scene has led to fans enjoyably meme-ing the hell out of it a la "moments before disaster" memes like The Eric Andre Show's "We'll Be Right Back". There are plenty of video clip edits that replace the shoulder-touch noise and Miles saying "hey" with other sound effects.
- The shoulder touch. explanation In a spin-off of the above "Hey" meme, instances of two characters with one of them laying a hand on the other's shoulder has led to half-serious jokes about this indicating Ship Tease, Ho Yay or anything else similar.
- "There's three, actually." ExplanationWhen asked about the two Spider-Men that made off with her computer by Kingpin, Doc Ock has this to say.
- "You got a problem with cartoons?" ExplanationThere is a screenshot◊ of Spider-Ham asking "You got a problem with cartoons?" which (as predicted by CellSpex) became a reaction image fans have used against people who either pan the film solely for being animated or believes that animation as a whole is purely a children's medium.
- "Into the [X]verse" ExplanationThe idea of multiple or various versions of a singular character teaming up ended up appealing to other fandoms such as Sonic The Hedgehog or The Legend of Zelda◊. This led to fan-art of other team-ups between multiple incarnations of famous franchise mascots/protagonists with Spider-Ham's role usually taken up by some of the more... memorable entries of the series.
- Miles's invisibility power and the fact that the first instance of it was him being scared and peacing out has led to many references to this meme◊.
- Miles watching Peter B.◊ explanationPeter B. usually being a role model (either good or bad) and Miles being the hapless and naive fan/student learning from him. Other times, Peter B. is another character while Miles is their successor (either spiritual or literal), i.e. Peni Parker watches◊ Takuya Yamashiro or her original comic counterpart◊.
- Wassup Danger? explanationMiles' big He's Back! moment when he finally gathers the courage to take a Leap of Faith off a skyscraper and websling for the first time is accompanied with this song playing in the background. People have been quick to apply this to unfitting scenarios as well.
- When Pixar made a series of Twitter posts to promote Incredibles 2's Oscar campaign, fans jokingly spammed this GIF◊ of Spider-Man looking confused in response.
- Comparing Miles's "Who's Morales?" (and to a lesser extent, Gwen's "Gweeeeeaaandaa") to the comics Peter Parker's "Instincts bad◊."
- Kingpin's sheer massive size, especially the usage of negative space to convey it, has been the butt of many escalating jokes.
- Kingpin running.◊ ExplanationA zoomed-in image of Exactly What It Says on the Tin used as a reaction image in reference to literally or metaphorically being chased or chasing something.
- "Watch this, he's going to say..." ExplanationFrom when Peter B. Parker and Miles break into Alchemax, and Peter has been through stuff like this so often that he can call exactly what Kingpin is going to say before he says it. This one can be used as an exploitable image where one calls out the predictability of a person or group.
- "Don't you dare finish that sentence! Don't do it! I'm sick of it!" explanationEarly in the film, Miles tries to quote the famous "With great power comes great responsibility." line, which greatly annoys the down on his luck Peter B. Parker, who then warns Miles not to say it around him. This ended up morphing into a meme where Peter's response can be applied to pretty much anything that can be captioned over Miles talking to him, particularly towards a very disliked target or out of favor meme.
- The character intros ("All right. Let's start at the beginning, one last time.") being done using footage of previous live-action Spider-Man films (ex. Peter B. Parker's intro with the Raimi trilogy Spider-Man footage) flooded YouTube after this film.
- "Not bad, kid." Explanation Peter B.'s So Proud of You moment as Miles dropped him into the portal to return him to his own universe has become a meme template used to show approval or pride at something.
- "Business is boomin'!" ExplanationA screenshot of Kingpin saying the line, taken from altered dialogue between him and his universe's Peter Parker. It's used to express pleasure at one's success or admiration for something gaining popularity or traction, or as an extension of a general meme claiming that companies have invented certain conspiracies to gain profit.
- Kilometers Morales. ExplanationJoking about how Miles' name would be changed to "Kilometers" in European versions of the movie, since the primary unit of distance is miles in the US and kilometers in Europe.
- From the sequel, we have Kilometers Immorales, Miles' Earth-42 counterpart who became the Prowler.
- Kingpin: A True New Yorker Explanation A fan-dub that starts with Kingpin saying the line, "It's not always about the money, Spider-Man", only to then quickly shift into him praising the New York Mets, complete with him wearing a Mets cap and being photoshopped at the Mets ballpark, Citi Field. Thanks to the Bait-and-Switch setup, this has been a popular joke among fans with many jokingly stating that the Kingpin is a true New Yorker that's obsessed with the Mets. For added hilarity, Spider-Man is canonically a Mets fan.
- An image◊ of Peter licking his fingers has become memetic due to his expression, leading to weird or Squicky captions such as "Me after I high-five my crush" or "Me when I get shit on my fingers from wiping my ass".
- Spider-Ham's nose. ExplanationAfter noticing that Spider-Ham's nostrils on his snout are also eyes, people have edited images of Spider-Ham with his head removed except for his snout, making him look like a small Spider-Man with an odd, elongated and horizontal neck and a small head.
- "It can't be that easy." "It's that easy."ExplanationNoir remarking on how easy it was to infiltrate Kingpin's Spider-Man "tribute" event in full costume just by wearing bowties is used to joke about how deceptively easy something is.
- Uncle Aaron is Papyrus. Explanation A Twitter user noticed that Uncle Aaron has a "Papyrus skull". This has led to edits of uncle Aaron and Papyrus switching roles and joke theories on how they're actually the same character, similarly to the "Steven After Not Surviving" meme about Papyrus's brother.
Across the Spider-Verse
- "Are these your drawings?"/Gwen reacting to Miles' sketchbook. ExplanationAfter reuniting with Miles in his room, Gwen starts flipping through his sketchbook despite his embarrassing protests. She comes across a detailed sketch of herself, and gets sheepish mentioning she missed Miles too. This very quickly became photoshop bait, with people substituting the drawing of Gwen with Gwen seeing a drawing of all kinds, many of them being Not Safe for Work.
- How to scare Marvel executives.ExplanationThe appearance of Mayday and the revelation that Peter B. had a child led to numerous fans mockingly claiming this, due to how they refuse to let Peter actually "grow up" in the comics.
- Miles Morales when Spider-[x] does [y]ExplanationDue to multiple recognizable incarnations making cameo appearances, people had a field day in creating fake scenarios where Miles meet some of the stranger versions of Spider-Man, such as Miles meeting Marvel vs. Capcom Spider-Man, who promptly tags in Vergil, or Miles meeting Lego Spider-Man and see him effortlessly build himself back together after supposedly dying.
- Everyone is jealous Miles still has parentsExplanationSpider-Man is a superhero known for losing Uncle Ben, with his other versions also having a lost loved one one way or another. There have been jokes about Miles being targeted simply because all the Spider-People are jealous both his parents are alive, regardless if Aaron fulfilled the Uncle Ben role.
- The scene where Miles briefly pauses before running away from Miguel has been the subject of many parodies.
- After it was revealed that the film will take place a year after the first one, many on Twitter cracked jokes about how Peter B. managed to conceived Mayday in that short time (assuming that almost every different universe has the same time flow).
- Miles don't play around with his snowbunnies.ExplanationA recurring joke on the internet about Miles' obsession with Gwen (the term 'Snowbunny' here referring to a white woman who is with a black man), with examples being the drawings of Gwen in Miles' sketchbook and how he paints a mural of her in the same place as his mural of Aaron, except much larger than the image of his own uncle.
- The bagel effect. ExplanationA video on YouTube (that has since been reuploaded several times) of the bagel scene from the first movie, cutting to a picture of the Spot with the Prowler's theme playing in the background, referencing the Goku Prowler meme. A pun on the butterfly effect, due to jokes about how such a small thing led to the Spot's rivalry with Miles.
- Boy, that bagel really hit the spot. ExplanationA mundane phrase that takes on a new meaning given the events of the film.
- I want to buy Spider-Punk merch but I would make Hobie mad.ExplanationA dilemma half-jokingly brought up by fans after the movie, pointing out how they would be feeding into the capitalism that Hobie actively hates if they want to show off their fandom of him
- "Make your own."ExplanationHobie tells Miles to create his own dimensional watch if he wants one so badly. This has since been adopted as a response to the above meme as a third option for fans to take: create their own merch to sell or buy from other fans rather than official sources.
- "CHAI TEA!?"ExplanationPavitr's memetic rant about how "chai" means "tea" and referring to it as "chai tea" is basically saying "tea tea" quickly became one of the movie's signature quotes, and inspired lots of variations with other words in other languages.
- Well, that was another easy adventure for Spider-Man. ExplanationAfter a clip of Pavitr celebrating his victory too soon made its way onto YouTube, people began uploading their own versions of various disastrous things happening after he says this line.
- I respect every single Spider-Man in here. ExplanationA video on YouTube popped up that has Miguel say this, followed by Miles asking if that includes him. Cue Miguel screaming "NO! YOU'RE BLACK!!!" at the top of his lungs and beating the crap out of Miles. Unsurprisingly, fans began making their own variations of it.
- Racist Miguel ExplanationIt's become a common joke to deliberately misinterperet Miguel's dislike of Miles as being rooted in anti-Black racism due to his (somewhat) understandable, but overboard disdain of Miles.
- "MILES, THE BLLLACK ONE!"ExplanationA sub-variation of the Racist Miguel meme which involves a dubbed over version of the "Stop Spider-Man" scene in which Miguel identifies Miles as "the Black one" (forgetting about at the very least Hobie and Margo due to Rule of Funny) and features this particularly hammy line of dubbed dialogue.
- "WHY WON'T YOU ADOPT ME!?" "BECAUSE YOU'RE BLACK!"ExplanationA meme extrapolating further on the "Racist Miguel" meme which co-opts dialogue from an infamous Dhar Mann video involving a racist man screaming at a child, with Miguel filling the man's role and Miles being the child.
- The concept of Canon Events in general has sparkled a wide variety of memes.
- What was their canon event?! Explanation (SPOILERS)After the revelation that every Spider-Person must go through at least one canon event, fans have started to joke about the absurdity of Joke Characters like Spider-Rex and Spider-Mobile going through these iconic traumatic events. Later on, people even started to joke about other equally bizarre Spider-People's canon events, including those that aren't even property of Marvel, like Spider-Timmy, Spider-Pig, and Spider-Kermit.
- That's not a canon event. ExplanationWhen the above meme became mainstream, people who had either misunderstood the concept of Canon Events or simply didn't watch the movie started the common misconception of canon events being a single bad, unique event that happened only to a singular Spider-Person in question, instead of being predetermined recognizable events that can potentially occur to every Spider-Person, prompting this response.
- Bro it's a canon event Explanation (Possible spoilers)A Black Comedy joke involving Miguel stopping time-travelers from preventing historical tragedies from happening due to them being canon events, and that the multiverse would collapse had they not happened. Another joke involves people dismissing tragedies that happen to themselves as canon events.
- Evento canónico ExplanationA reaction image◊ of Miguel seen on the Spanish-speaking side of the fandom.
- Así lo requiere el canon Explanation A variation◊ of a Spanish Dragon Ball reaction image◊, where Miguel sends a message saying that the canon needed something, often times an unfortunate event, to happen.
- me when I see [x] doing [y] (I can't interfere, it's a canon event) ExplanationA meme mostly applying to fandoms and communities, joking that several of their members have gone through similar experiences, not unlike the canon events as depicted in the movie. Examples include nerdy people finding out about Homestuck or similar.
- Comparing canon events to fixed points in time.ExplanationPeople were quick to draw comparisons between canon events and fixed points in time from Doctor Who, as both are events that cannot be changed, lest the cosmos unravel. There are those who insert Miguel into a sad moment experienced by the Doctor.
- Miguel: No dejaré que alteres el canon Edge!Explanation another Spanish meme, there's a rivalry between Edge from the WWE and Miguel due the former's memetic status as a time traveler who goes to try to stop past tragic events from ever happening (it's a long story) and the latter's status as someone who wants to uphold the canon, naturally people went to make memes of these 2 fighting.
- Super Robot Wars fans love poking fun at canon events, because the series is known for outright defying them in many instances. With the addition of several games being multiverse plots, several fans love joking that Miguel would have one hell of a headache if he learned of the franchise.
- Peni Parker's Shinji arc. Explanation Peni's more somber attitude and her Evangelion influence becoming more apparent have fans superimpose her in many of Shinji Ikari's traumatic scenes or attribute Evangelion memes to her, such as claiming that "her bitch wife made her watch orange". Some have further joked that her canon event was the Third Impact.
- Peni Parker's Simon arc. Explanation On the inverse of things, other fans like to portray Peni as the more Hot-Blooded character you'd find in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Studio Gainax's other big mecha show, as Peni dons a jacket and attitude remarkably similar to his in her brief appearance at the end of the film. Simon also made a cameo in her original comic.
- Papa Miguel ExplanationFans took notice of two members of Miguel’s team - the homicidal clones Spidercide and the Spider-Doppelgänger - and was confused as to how he wrangled them in. A few of them suggested that he treated them nicely, especially the constantly abused Doppelgänger.
- "I'm gonna crease your J's, Spider-Man..." ExplanationBased off a TikTok where The Spot threatens to ruin Miles' Air Jordans, pushing his villainy to Reverse Flash levels of pettiness.
- "Nah, I'mma do my own thing." ExplanationMiles tells Miguel this after being told he can't defy his destiny, with the message being he's going to try anyway. This is often used when people plan to do something after being told not to.
- "Nah, I'mma kill myself." ExplanationOn the other hand, others have altered Miles's line to express their massive disappointment or despair at something going wrong or not the way they wanted.
- "Spider-Man, why did you create that guy?" Explanation Jefferson's reaction to the Spot claiming him and Miles created one another has been reposted many times due to Jefferson's hilariously low-key delivery, like Spider-Man causing a Supervillain's existence was as upsetting as him eating Jefferson's last bag of snacks.
- "Spider-Man, why did you rape that guy?" Explanation What some people mishear Jefferson's above line as, making the whole scene much different in tone.
- "Spider-Man, why did you [x]?" ExplanationPeople then later replaced the slight Miles committed towards the Spot with a variety of other things (like not joining the Spot's party, ghosting him, doxing him, turning him into a png instead of a gif, etc.), which also resulted in Jefferson asking Miles why he did that.
- "Spider-Man, why did you— HOLY SHIT, Interrupting Meme!!" ExplanationRight as Jefferson almost scolds Miles for creating The Spot, something random flies into frame to derail the scene.
- "Spider-Man, fuck this guy's ass."Explanation A dubbed-over version of the joke that completely flips the scene on his head, with Jefferson aggressively telling Miles to beat Spot up and "twist his dick".
- Due to being two African-American kids that look identical save for one having an afro and the other having braids, more than one person has compared "our" Miles and Earth-42 Miles to Huey and Riley Freeman respectively.
- Due to both being powerful white humanoids with a hole for a face, some have made comparisons between the Spot and Minos Prime.
- The final form of Spot has also been compared to The Anti-Spiral King, due to how they're both universal threats that are sketched in a similar fashion, with entirely black colouring other then some features like their face which has caused fanart to emerge.
- Miles rizzes himself up.Explanation (major spoilers) In the cliffhanger ending, when Miles is faced with his Evil Counterpart from Earth-42, the two enter a very intense stare down. People have noted that, if you change the music for that scene, it suddenly looks very different, like the two Miles are trying to "rizz up" one another.
- Low Tier Miguel.Explanation (Possible spoilers)Miguel's adamance on allowing personal tragedies to happen to Spider-People and blistering "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Miles prompted multiple memes comparing him to the memetically infamous LowTierGod, often accompanied by Miguel's music cue.
- Knock yourself out.ExplanationWhat Gwen says to Miguel (to which Miguel replies "Why are you saying it like that?") right before the Vulture knocks him away. The sound effect of Vulture hitting him is typically replaced with some other sound effect, like the Better Call Saul theme's guitar riff or metal clanging.
- Me looking at the universe where [x].ExplanationA common caption attached to a gif/video of Miguel sadly watching home videos of himself playing with his late daughter. This is often used as expressing disappointment or sadness that we are living in a universe where such and such never happened while another universe is thriving and happy because it did there.
- "Maybe get off the kid's ass..." "I'm sorry, what?" "What!?"ExplanationMiles - as Spider-Man - tries to give his father Jeff some parenting 'advice' which is also something he wants to get off his chest but can't say it to his father as his civilian self. Jeff responds with a flat 'What', causing Miles to panic a bit. The scene proves to be quite popular with the fans and there are various edits of it.
- "Will you adopt me?" "What?" "What!?"ExplanationGwen's first meeting with Jessica Drew has her completely in awe at the older Spider-Woman and inadvertently asks Jess if she could adopt her, prompting an exchange that's pretty similar to the above Miles & Jefferson example, which means it also gets memed quite a bit.
- Miles Morales: el hacedor de Spider-pibes felices.ExplanationFrom the Spanish side of the fandom, meaning "happy spider-men maker". Thanks to Miles' intervention of events (namely him preventing one of Pavitr's canon events where a Spider-Man fails to save a captain from dying, and how he inspired Peter B. Parker to fix his relationship with his MJ and have Mayday), people have decided that Miles can and will make any Spider-Man's life happier if he wanted to, canon events be damned.
- Meows Morales ExplanationShortly after the film's release, Meows Morales, a cat version of Miles from Spider-Ham's universe in the comics, became popular on social media, with fanart remaking both cat memes and scenes from the Spider-Verse movies to include him.
- Every viewing of Across the Spider-Verse is personalized ExplanationAfter viewers reported differences in different viewings of Across the Spider-Verse (which were confirmed by an editor to be real), the "Every copy of Super Mario 64 is personalized" meme was quickly repurposed for the film.
- Don’t eat the Spider-Verse Whopper! ExplanationShortly after the movie’s release, Burger King released a tie-in Whopper that had red buns, and black sesame seeds. People began treating it as a deadly burger that can kill you instantly if you take a bite from it, and videos started appearing on websites such as Youtube that feature people taking a bite from the Whopper, only to then cut to them in the hospital, with the caption ‘Don’t eat the Spider-Verse Whopper’. Naturally, this caused the burger to explode in popularity.
- "Are you ready to die Miguel O'Hara?" ExplanationAn exploitable meme based on an Instagram post by Azealia Banks. It spread on "X" (formerly Twitter) in response to Miguel terrorizing Miles.
- Miles fell first, Gwen fell harder. Explanation Said by many Miles/Gwen shippers after the movie's depiction of Gwen's feelings. Namely, while Miles' crush on Gwen started out as one-sided in the first movie, in Across, Gwen is implied to have had Miles nearly constantly on her mind during the 16 months they spent apart, and she was willing to risk her entire mission and position at the Society just to spend an afternoon with him, leading to the joke of Gwen actually being the more "obsessed" one between the two.
Miles: When will I know I’m ready?!
Peter B.: You won't. It's a meme of faith. That's all it is, Miles — a meme of faith.
