Sunny Flowers: Is there any you particularly like about Tropico, Ambassador Crane?
Ambassador Crane: Well, I have developed an affinity for your llamas. They remind me of my momma.
Sunny Flowers: Oh? I don't like llamas. They're rude and they spit.
Ambassador Crane: Just like dear ol' momma.
Tropico 4

Everything's better with llamas, right? Not if you happen to make one angry. In addition to being considered just plain funny llamas (and other members of the camel family, or camelids) are notorious for their tendency to spit when they get irritated. Needless to say, this naturally lends itself to Toilet Humor, and pretty much any comedy TV show or movie that involves these animals will have at least one spitting joke.

In real life, the so-called "spit" of llamas and camels isn't technically spit at all, but semi-digested food from their first stomach, similar to the cud that cattle and sheep chew. While they certainly can spit it a long distance if they need to, they typically only do this as a last resort — this is especially true of camels, for whom it can be a waste of moisture. Don't expect either of these aspects to be brought up in fiction. Fictional camelids are more likely to be portrayed as literally spitting on their enemies, and doing so at the least provocation, or none.

See also Smelly Skunk, for another animal whose defenses get played for comedy. Often found in a Grossout Show, but by no means exclusive to them. If the spit goes to the eye, may lead to Eye Scream. If the spit does some kind of damage, whether blinding or Hit Points, it overlaps with Super Spit.

    Anime & Manga
  • In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, Joseph Joestar attempts to ride a camel, resulting in him getting spit on. He then remarks that camel spit makes good sunscreen.
  • Little Witch Academia: In the episode "Akko's Adventure in Sucyworld", Akko is sent into Sucy's mind, where she meets multiple versions of Sucy. Among them is one resembling a llama referred to as "Sucy Who Wants To Spit on Everything"; said Sucy proceeds to spit on Akko on introduction.

    Comic Books
  • Tintin: A Running Gag in Prisoners Of The Sun where Captain Haddock gets spat on by annoyed llamas. At the end of the book, he returns the favor by spitting water on one (who hadn't done anything).

    Fan Works
  • Bucky Barnes Gets His Groove Back & Other International Incidents: Just after escaping with a spaceship in If They Haven't Learned Your Name, Barnes touches down in Peru, near where a few llamas are grazing. His narration describes them as a cross between a deer, a sheep, a pile of dirt, and 50% overbite. After a moment of deep consideration, a llama spits on him, so Barnes, feeling utterly done with this day, lays back down on the ground and goes to sleep. He's woken up the next morning by a pair of llama farmers, bringing a llama with them that also spits on Barnes.

    Film — Animated
  • Disney Animated Canon:
    • Aladdin: While trying to turn Abu into an animal of transportation, Genie thinks about making him a camel and warns, "Watch out, they spit," which Abu does.
    • Subverted in Dumbo. A camel in the circus parade is chewing cud and is about to spit it out when he notices people looking at him and decides to swallow it instead.
    • Since Kuzco spends most of The Emperor's New Groove as a llama, he ends up spitting from time to time. At one point, he extinguishes a fire by doing this!

    Film — Live-Action
  • In Evan Almighty, an alpaca spits in a crooked senator's face.
  • Family Swap: 7-year-old Chacha asks for a pony and gets a llama, which becomes the family pet. The llama occasionally spits at the other characters for comedy. The last shot of the movie has Alain (the patriarch) spit at one of his kids, revealing the llama's conscience is in his body as a result of the "Freaky Friday" Flip affecting the whole family.

    Literature
  • In the Discworld book Pyramids, camels are described as the world's greatest mathematicians, with an innate grasp of complex trigonometry that they use solely to spit at people with uncanny accuracy.
  • The Kane Chronicles: In the second book, The Throne of Fire, Sadie is Crossing the Desert with a boy she likes but can't quite admit it on a pair of camels they created out of clay figurines, but are pretty much camels, right down to the distasteful behavior: a male she calls "Hindenburg" because he's so full of gas, and a female she calls "Katrina", because she's a natural disaster. As they make awkward conversation, she sees Katrina, as she describes it, "try to kiss, or spit on, Hindenburg, who farted in response. I found it a sad commentary on boy/girl relations."

    Live-Action TV
  • One Arabian Nights miniseries features a Shapeshifter Showdown between djinn who transform into camels. The camels' spit is used to counter a dragon's fire breath.
  • The Hoobs: In one episode, Roma runs away from an approaching camel lest it spit on her since she doesn't want "goo" on her.

    Rides
  • The Aladdin's Magic Carpets ride at the Disney parks has camels that squirt water at the riders.

    Tabletop Games

    Video Games
  • In Aladdin (Virgin Games), jumping on a camel's hump makes it spit. It is possible to take out Mooks with the camel spit.
  • In Case 7 of Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, a merchant's camel spits on him to let him know when a trade isn't in his favor.
  • Donkey Kong 64: In the first outside area of Angry Aztec, there is a llama trapped in a cage who is freed by DK and later found asleep in one of the temples in the second outside area. Inside said temple, a music pad can be activated to make the llama wake up and spit into a pool of lava to turn it into water, allowing access to the room where Lanky is being held captive.
  • In The Emperor's New Groove, Kuzco can attack enemies and activate switches by spitting grape seeds at them when he's in his usual llama form.
  • EverQuest II: In a Shout-Out to Conan the Barbarian, any Barbarians (or anyone using a Barbarian illusion) will find themselves being spat on by a camel in the Hopewell Harbor area of Raj'Dur Plateaus. This prompts the player to punch the camel in response and earn "The Camel Puncher" title.
  • In Final Fantasy XIV, dhammels are a type of camel with limbs and necks as long as a giraffe's. Their saliva, a useful alchemical reagent, is described as having the smell of a blue cheese artisan left to rot in a latrine for a week.
  • Fire Emblem Engage: Amber grew up at an alpaca ranch, so, naturally, he's quite accustomed to their spitting. He even claims to be a "professional alpaca spit dodger", but his demonstrations of this make this claim dubious.
  • Incredibly, there's an entire game about this trope: Llama in your Face, a Shooter PC game about a bouncing llama in a zoo that has to attack the crowd and its keepers by spitting them; you can get coins by doing so.
  • Minecraft: Llamas can launch spit wads as their sole means of attack, dealing half a heart of damage (the minimum amount possible in-game) for every wad that makes contact. They will do this either when players attack them, spitting once for every blow dealt, or whenever they see an untamed wolf, spitting rapidly and continuously until the wolf is dead or driven away. Amusingly, due to the way they technically spit in retaliation against whatever hits them, a llama that misses its target and hits another llama can start a chain reaction where nearby llamas start continuously spitting at each other, retaliating for each retaliatory blow until only one is left standing.
  • Pathfinder: Llamas can spit as a special ranged attack that does no damage but sickens the target.

    Web Original
  • Empires SMP Season 2: Since the series takes place in Minecraft, Owen, the llama bartender of Chromia, is capable of this. According to him, when he could vocalize this, spitting is a cultural thing for llamas and form some sort of tonal language. However, since Owen has a tendency to spit in the drinks while on the job, many customers end up leaving negative reviews and Owen is briefly turned human (actually Little Bit Beastly) so he can be more capable at his job. As he keeps his llama mentality after the transformation and never quite grasps How to Human, this doesn't quite work out in the end, though he remains a faithful companion.

    Western Animation
  • Given his obsession with llamas, Carl from The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius normally gets spat on every time one appears.
  • Camp Lazlo: In the appropriately-titled "Loogie Llama" episode, Lazlo tries to attract an animal that the Bean Scouts can ride. He winds up with a llama that he names "Spitty", which he and some of the other Bean Scouts try to pass off as a unicorn by placing an ice cream cone on top of its head.
  • In Dr. Zitbag's Transylvania Pet Shop, the Great Llama of Universal Wisdom blesses the Exorsisters by spitting his purifying water in their faces.
  • Hero: 108: In "Camel Castle", the camels attack by spitting saliva that smells so foul that it knocks people out.
  • Teen Titans: One of the many animal forms occasionally assumed by Beast Boy is a llama, and he tends to spit at his enemies in llama-mode. An episode sees Gizmo surprised by Beast Boy as a llama, seconds before getting a cupful of loogie to the face.
