Xarissa Silverstone seems to have always been a cowardly high school student. However, her life changes dramatically when the Muse of Horror, Hanlowa, makes her become the Scribe for the Silver Codex so that her hometown can be purified from evil. She has dreams of other townspeople who have to confront supernatural evil in one form or another, and writes them down. She slowly rediscovers herself and her own courage in the process.

Tropes present in this novel:

  • Berserk Button: Hanlowa really doesn't like being called a demon, or someone trying to kill her Scribes. Also don't tell Zora you plan to kill her friends.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Xarissa's dreams are these she has to dream about horrible things happening in town. Tevan has one where his mom blames him for being put in an asylum, and his abusive father say he will turn into him.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: The Vampires are more traditional ones when it comes to powers. However, a major point is how Vampires need to drink human blood, and why animal blood is a very bad idea.
  • The Muse: Hanlowa does say her sisters are the nine original muses, but she was born in Renaissance Times, which is why she is not mentioned in Greek Mythology.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Xarissa's attitude towards being a Scribe This changes by the end.
  • Serial Killer: A new serial killer eventually makes their first kill in the book.
  • Townwitha Dark Secret: Centerville has a lot of dark secrets.
