The Friday Society is a YA novel written by Adrienne Kress. It was published December 6, 2012. It is about three girls from very different backgrounds who work together to figure out who’s responsible for murders in the their city, as well as a threat on London.

Tropes associated with The Friday Society

  • Action Girl: All of them, but especially Michiko.
  • And the Adventure Continues: The book ends with Cora, Nessie, and Michiko deciding to continue to solve mysteries as the titular Friday Society.
  • Benevolent Boss: Both Raheem, Nessie’s boss, and Lord White, Cora’s boss, cares for their assistants. Subverted with Michiko, who Michiko said that he acted this way earlier, but mistreats Michiko.
  • Brainy Brunette: Cora has brown hair, and is the inventor of the group.
  • Foreshadowing: Andrew mentions that some people aren't as good as others and discusses killing, which foreshadows him killing flower girls.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Nessie tends to be this. Justified, as she is used to it due to her past.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Raheem plays this role to Nessie and Cora on separate occasions, as shown by how he told Cora that although he accepts Nessie's role in the team, it is not his place to force her to agree to join.
  • Red Herring: Cora believes that Fog also killed the flower girls, only to learn later that Andrew was the killer.
  • Samurai: Michiko wants to be one. subverted later when Michiko decides she wants to be part of their team.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Cora thought that Fog would be a man.
  • Secret Identity: Near the climax, the girls realize that they should protect their identity, so they use masks (or in Cora’s case, goggles), and give themselves fake names. Justified, as both Cora and Nessie care about their bosses' reputations, and don't want to risk ruining it.
  • Steampunk: The story is steampunk.
  • You No Take Candle: Michiko is just learning English.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Nessie briefly quits the team after a near-death experience, only to agree after a pep talk from Cora, as well as the idea of disguises.
