The Facility is an ongoing Web Serial Novel written by a young blogger called Fantastic Mr. Mac. The chapters are uploaded every other day.
The story follows a sixteen year old boy named Matsuo Kōdaina who after he beats a person nearly to death just for talking too much in school is sent to an abandoned high school converted into a maximum security prison for juveniles known simply as The Facility. Inside, Matsuo must survive for an undetermined amount of time before being released. Obviously, this is a real Crapsack World to live in.
This work contains examples of:
- Action Girl: Fu...without a doubt.
- Afraid of Blood: Matsuo, big time. However, seeing your older brother impaled on a fence when you were four might do that to you.
- Anti-Hero: Everyone inside The Facility, or at least the Emo, are.
- Arch-Enemy: Ōkibo and the Jocks are this to the Emo group.
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: There's a reason Fu is the undisputed leader of the Emo group.
- Beneath the Mask: Fu deduces that Matsuo is a sweet and caring person, despite his cynical and genius planner attitude after he shows compassion to starving, white puppy
- Berserk Button: Matsuo has a few, most notably when someone stares at him. Fu as well, when people ignore her especially when she gives direct orders. Ōkibo pushes one of Matsuo's newfound ones when he threatens Fu.
- Big Damn Heroes: Fu arrives just in time to save Matsuo from the Jock patrollers.
- Black-and-Gray Morality: Downplayed and justified. For all intents and purposes, every single one of them (with the questionable exception of Fu and Netamu) are criminals in various degrees. The only distinction is in how they handle themselves inside the Facility.
- Bond One-Liner: After beating Netamu in a combat test by scarring his eye the same way Netamu scarred his earlier that day, Matsuo issues this one.I turn my eyes to Netamu, who's finally getting up. I walk over to him and drop his metal pipe at his feet and pick up the bokken. I look him in the face and smirk. "An eye for an eye."
- Break the Cutie: Happens to Sasoku and is starting to happen to Fu
- Break the Haughty: The entire story thus far has served to do this to Matsuo. He enters in confident that his plans will work and he's smarter than everyone inside, then promptly is shown how unprepared he is.
- Choice of Two Weapons: Apparently, Matsuo's packed for a war.
- Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Fu comes off as one at times.
- Crapsack World: It is implied that this hellhole of a world is one. Children committing "crimes" are forced to be placed in this free roaming juvenile detention center where the only things that are illegal are escape and firearms.
- Crazy-Prepared: Deconstructed and lampshaded by Fu. Though Matsuo is incredibly smart and a great thinker, his lack of knowledge about the specifics of The Facility cause most of the confidence he has in his plans to falter and his plans to fail.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: The first time Matsuo and Netamu square off, Netamu sweeps him easily and cuts him above his left eye.
- Dark Is Not Evil: The Emo gang dress primarily in black, but their leader and members thus far are actually fairly nice people. Netamu, however...
- He Who Fights Monsters: Effectively used as the Chapter 6 title. Matsuo certainly looks to be edging closer to the amoral actions of his enemies.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: Fu has these.
- Jerkass: Netamu.
- Karmic Death: Sasoku kills Ōkibo in the same manner that he killed Takeshi.
- The Man Behind the Man: Matsuo, Netamu and Fu suspect that Ōkibo acts on the behalf of his leader but screws up the commands because he's not particularly bright.
- Neck Snap: The way that Ōkibo kills Takeshi.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Fu's being quiet and serious...yeah, that's definitely not good.
- Precious Puppy: Matsuo finds one after Netamu kills its parents.
- The Rival: Netamu is this to Matsuo.
- Smarter Than You Look: Uttered nearly word for word by Netamu to Matsuo. Later, applied to Ōkibo
- There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Granted Ōkibo deserved it...but it is a little much.
- Tranquil Fury: Fu has been this since the end of chapter 4.
- Unstoppable Rage: Matsuo has this in Chapter 6, but the award goes to Sasoku. Even direct orders from Fu don't stop her from taking vengeance against Ōkibo
- Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: Matsuo wields the wooden bokken that his older brother used in his kendo classes. Serves as a Tear Jerker of sorts.
