Echo is a Dutch horror novel by Thomas Olde Heuvelt, the author of HEX, which has been translated into a number of different languages, including English.
The story involves mountain climbers Nick and Augustin scaling the Maudit, a mysterious mountain in the Swiss Alps that is not on any maps and where the normal laws of physics do not appear to apply. After a harrowing experience, Augustin is dead and Nick lies wounded in a hospital. However, he appears to be strangely haunted…
Tropes in this book:
- Continuity Nod: There is a brief mention of a town in the Hudson valley that disappeared, implying that HEX (the international version, that is) takes place in the same universe.
- Demonic Possession: An unusual example, in that Nick appears to be possessed by the spirit of a mountain.
- Eldritch Location: The Maudit, a mountain that is not on any map and where physical space appears to be warped, causing Nick and Augustin to become hopelessly lost.
- One-Word Title: Echo, both in Dutch and English, since the word is the same in both languages ( Albeit pronounced slightly differently.).
- Shout-Out: The chapters of the book are titled after famous horror stories and novels.
