Kingdom building... with a werewolf!

"Ah well. As someone who used to be human, having to solve everything with violence is just a pain. But that's the only thing that'll get through to these two."
Veight

Der Werwolf: The Annals of Veight (人狼への転生、魔王の副官, Jinrou e no Tensei, Maou no Fukukan) is a Japanese Light Novel series written by Hyougetsu (漂月) and illustrated by Nishieda. The series began as a web novel on Shousetsuka ni Narou on July 22, 2015. The first official volume was published on November 14, 2015 by Earth Star Entertainment under the Earth Star Novel label. The series has been published digitally in English as Der Werwolf: The Annals of Veight by J-Novel Club since September 13, 2018.

The reborn werewolf known as Veight now leads the Demon Lord's third regiment under the title of Vice-Commander. Having conquered the trading hub known as Ryunheit, he soon learns the struggles of governing a city of mixed human/demon population. Armed with an understanding of inter-species relations and a desire for peace, he spends his days quelling violent demons and pacifying disruptive humans in his pursuit to bring balance and tranquility.

As there are multiple iteration of the series: Beware of unmarked spoilers.

The series contains the following tropes:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Technically it's claws. Veight's claws are so sharp it can skewer any unarmored flesh.
  • Alliance with an Abomination: Any human viceroy initially thought that they're doing this trope when allying with the demon army. After they were convinced by Veight, this became a Downplayed Trope.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership:
    • The Demon Lord, Friedensrichter, is the leader of the demons and can go against the Hero who have massacred the 2nd regiment army singlehandedly.
    • Gomoviroa: Inherited the title from the Demon Lord after he got killed and willed it. An immortal necromancer that is capable on creating a 100 undead in one day (her disciples can only create 1 per day) and the greatest mage the demon army have. Also evolved into something that understood a meaning of death and capable of absorbing heat from the surroundings and turn it into mana. Also becomes a Demon Empress after passing the Demon Lord title to Airia
    • Veight: a "vice-commander" of the 3rd regiment army. Captured a city, ruled it for a while, and still killed the Hero
  • Ax-Crazy: Downplayed on the demon army. Some would just love to kill that they have to be trained in order to control their urges.
  • Babies Ever After: The main couple, Veight and Airia, have a daughter in the future volumes.
  • Benevolent Boss: Veight is an example of this. This is why even humans, who were afraid of the demons, were lenient with his rule.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Veight may be known as the "Black Werwolf King", but he is anything but evil.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: The Senate sends a group of four "heroes" to boost morale. Veight, who was prepared to fend off an actual hero, is shocked when he easily kills three out of the four of them, with the fourth immediately surrendering.
  • Gossip Evolution: Veight lead an army of 2000 undead soldiers to defeat a group of 400 soldiers who were attacking Ryunheit. This story gets passed around as Veight killing 400 soldiers by himself, then 4000 soldiers, and later 40,000 soldiers, much to Veight's exasperation.
Seriously, it was only 400. And I only killed 3 of those 400 personally.
  • Humble Hero: Veight will frequently downplay his achievements, much to his subordinates exasperation.
  • Names To Run Away From Very Fast: The "Black Werewolf King".
  • Super-Scream: Veight's "Soul Shaker".
