An entry in the Endless Quest gamebook series, based on the Dungeons & Dragons game.

The reader plays a young girl named Laela, and when she and her friend Petra free a pegasus from an exploitative circus owner, they're required to join the circus to pay off their debt or else. While doing so they have to both struggle to survive interacting with a circus full of fantasy monsters, but to reveal the sinister plans of its owner.

This book provides examples of:

  • Circus Brat: Laela and her friend Petra become D&D versions of them.
  • Circus of Fear: Despite that actually being the name of the book, most of the circus folk you meet, even the crabmen, are pretty friendly to a pair of kids. There are still plenty of sinister goings on behind the guady exterior, so it still well counts.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Laela and Petra, so no-one will miss them when they join the circus.
  • Eyepatch of Power: The circus's animal trainer, Rebus Romney, has one.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Laela's portrayed as having quite the way with animals, even D&D standards like displacer-beasts, owlbears and griffins.
