Hello. I am Rythian, and this is TV Tropes.

Rythian (real name Joakim Hellstrand) is a Let's Player and a member of the Yogscast. He is known for the Minecraft machinima series The Blackrock Chronicle which he stars in and helps produce with Zoey Proasheck.

Similar to Hannah Rutherford, he largely looks at story-driven games such as Starcraft II, Dishonored and BioShock. He frequently immerses himself into the shoes of the characters he plays.

As of 2020 he (like many other Yogscast members) has moved away from YouTube and is focusing mainly on streaming via Twitch, where he is one of the main hosts of the "Armchair Admirals" series alongside Lewis Brindley, Duncan Jones, and Daltos.

His YouTube channel can be found here, and his Yogscast Wikia page is here.

Rythian provides examples of:

  • Aborted Arc: His run of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands was abandoned after four episodes, because the playthrough made him so nostalgic for the original Sands trilogy that he decided to quit and start an LP of Sands of Time instead.
    • The Blackrock Chronicle was eventually cancelled because Zoey kept burning herself out spending weeks building elaborate sets for 20 minutes of footage.
  • Accent On The Wrong Syllable: In his BioShock Infinite playthrough, he repeatedly refers to a gondola as "gon-DOH-la" instead of "GON-doh-la", even after the game pronounces it "GON-doh-la". (Strictly speaking, his pronunciation is correct, but it's the improper one for the situation (a "gon-DOH-la" refers to a freight car, and a "GON-doh-la" refers to a boat, in this case a small airship).)
    • In his playthrough of the DLC for Dishonored, he repeatedly pronounces Daud's name as "Dodd", even after multiple characters use the "Dowd" pronunciation, although he does later use the correct pronunciation.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: During the first part of his team's Cluster Chunk challenge he becomes mesmerised by the moving textures on a netherrack and soulsand block. To the point that he actually stops what he's doing to stare at them and starts making 'Wubwub' noises.
  • Badass Boast: In his Civ V solo Sweden playthrough, just after Boudicca calls him "An uncivilized brute" for declaring war on her because she tried to steal his technologynote :
Rythian: Me? You're the one who started this whole religious war, with your missionaries, with your prophets, with your Catholicism. You, young lady, are going down. It is time for you to face the blue-and-yellow anger, the unmatched military force of the lion, massed at your border. This is not the time to insult me, as the armies of tanks trample through your homeland, and the musicians sing a dirge of your impending demise, as you dared to stand against the might of the Swedish Army. History will only remember you as a footnote in the legacy of Planet Earth, the planet that Sweden will soon ascend, and leave. We, are going to the heavens.
  • Berserk Button:
    • The biggest one initially was pestering him about when the next episode of The Blackrock Chronicles would be out. It got to the point where he had to write a section in his "Frequently Asked Questions" on Tumblr. For a while there were two kinds of commenters on his Youtube channel - those who were pestering him about Blackrock (and insulting him in the process), and those who were defending him.
    • Threaten a child in-game and he will slaughter you.
    • Sjin's trolling in Trouble in Terrorist Town eventually gets to him, causing him to go on a (half-joking) "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
    • In Dishonored, it's spitting and mistreating people. One notable instance occurs in Dishonored 2 where after he views a servant being callously murdered by a guardswoman, he proceeds to launch himself at the guardswoman and, in stark contrast to his usual style, draw out the fight while taunting her, then brutally kill her and snarling that he hopes she bled out slowly.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: He can pull off an almost perfect imitation of Vincent D'Onofrio, and his imitation of Michael Madsen is nothing to sneeze at either.
  • Catchphrase: "Owned!" and "Ow".
  • The Chew Toy:
    • At the end of their second Civilization V runthrough, he becomes this, as Duncan Jones is razing his lands after failing to betray him, Sjin starts annoying him, Sips pays Duncan to betray him in the first place, and Lewis Brindley goes out of his way to nuke him instead of a more high-priority target. All while Sjin starts singing how "I love burning Swedes".
    • In the start of series 4, he loses in the first episode.
  • Cliché Storm: invoked This was his general opinion on Call of Duty: Ghosts, which he found extremely frustrating and outright encouraged his audience to avoid.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: To Zoey Proasheck in The Blackrock Chronicles.
  • Cool Mask: His Minecraft avatar sports one that covers his mouth and nose. The fandom is very curious about what he's hiding behind it.
  • Creepy Monotone: Compare how Rythian speaks in the first episode of The Tekkit Adventure and the first episode of The Tekkit Rebirth.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a very dry wit.
  • The Dog Bites Back: In Civilization V. He betrays Duncan Jones and Sjin for utterly razing Malmo to the ground in the previous playthrough, denying them the win and giving Lewis Brindley yet another victory. Fittingly enough, the episode is titled "Malmo Remembers".
  • Drowning My Sorrows: In The Blackrock Chronicle, he gets utterly trashed at Ravs' bar after escaping Duncan Jones.
  • Empty Shell: In The Tekkit Rebirth.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Repeatedly in his playthrough of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider - he ignores clues, doesn't fully read contracts and then wonders why they're not marked as "completed" (for example, one of the contracts for the first episode clearly says there is a certain item that must be destroyed, and even though he re-reads the contract repeatedly, he fails to notice this bit and then is annoyed when it doesn't change to "complete").
  • Friend to All Children: Even aside from his Papa Wolf tendencies, the way he talks to the Little Sisters in BioShock 2 is always very kind and gentle.
  • Genre Savvy: In Civilization V, he's often very suspicious of Duncan Jones and Sjin, and often has good reason to. Considering that the first game in the series involved Duncan burning his cities down for no reason and Sijin just adding fuel to the fire, Rythian really has no reason to trust either of them in the future.
  • The Hyena:
  • Motor Mouth: While not as bad as Sjin, he gets pretty talkative when explaining magical things in Tekkit.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Zoey in real life. They're not going out, but are go-to collab partners.
  • Revenge Before Reason: At the end of Season 3 of Civilization V, he decides to betray Duncan Jones and Sjin for razing Malmo to the ground in Season 2, aligning with Lewis Brindley and getting him the win. This is despite Lewis nuking Malmo and finishing it off, although he claims this is because Duncan and Sjin annoyed him.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Normally Rythian swears around as much as the others, but towards the end of the second Civilization V Let's Play, he starts swearing a lot, as he's very annoyed.
  • Straight Man: To Zoey Proasheck in The Blackrock Chronicle.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Sandwiches. Also zombie brains, in the Cluster Chunk and Race for the Wool Minecraft games. Or, if you're going by his Yogscraft Wikia entry, sandwiches, pizza and kladdkaka (basically a Swedish lava cake).
  • Troll: Civilization V gives him his moments. At the end of Season 3, he decides to turn on Duncan Jones and Sjin for razing his main city in Season 2, Malmo, to the ground, even though Lewis Brindley nuked it afterwards (the decisive nail in the coffin). He says his reasons are doing this are because Duncan and Sjin annoyed him, which is true.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Zoey Proasheck's Minecraft character. Often Played for Laughs.
