Hymn For Her.

BEWARE OF SPOILERS.

Season 1

1 - Psalm 46:5
  • The look of pure joy on Ava's face every time she did something that most able-bodied people take for granted. After spending most of her life paralysed from the neck down, it's hard to blame her.
    • Ava practically beamed with it while she ran on the beach in a later scene. Not only that, but there's no doubt this is the first time she has even seen a beach (and the stars) since her accident, which makes the scene doubly heartwarming.
    • And again in a later scene, when she is dancing in a bar, and she doesn't care about how goofy she looks while she does it.
  • Sister Camila playing a song for the late Sister Shannon, with Beatrice, Lilith and Mary all gathered around her, remembering their fallen friend.

2 - Proverbs 31:25

  • The way that Ava totally geeks out over the mind-controlled wheelchairs developed by Arq Tech. While she was still a quadriplegic, Ava wanted one of these, but since she can walk again, a wheelchair she can control with her mind is no longer necessary. Despite that, it's almost as if Christmas has come early for her when she lays eyes on them.
  • After seeing a little boy locked up in a room at Arq Tech, Ava's first thought was to try and help him.

3 - Ephesians 6:11

  • After Cardinal Duretti expresses scepticism over Ava's worthiness of the Halo, also wondering if she is even a believer, Father Vincent's response is? "Is it not His belief in her that matters most?"
  • Beatrice is the only one who believes that Ava didn't kill herself. Sure, Father Vincent believes that it is God's wish that she lives, but ultimately he also thinks that Ava's past is her business. Beatrice is still the only one who believes her; she thinks that Ava is thoughtless and self-centred, but she doesn't think she's dishonest.
  • After Mother Superion viciously tears into Ava and proclaims that she doesn't deserve forgiveness or redemption. reducing her to tears, Vincent is quick to point out that none of them deserve either according to the gospel. In the eyes of God, they are no better or more deserving of His grace or compassion than Ava is.

4 - Ecclesiasticus 26:9-10

  • Chanel, not only helping Ava pick out clothes but also help her find her style because she can relate to her a little. As she explains it, it took her a while to figure out who she was, as well.
  • A bedridden Ava learning how to move her finger during a flashback. This also doubles as a funny moment, as she takes the opportunity to give Sister Frances the finger.
Ava: Well, you know your little joke on how I never lift a finger around here? (Sister Frances leaves in disgust) It's the little victories.
  • JC deciding to travel with Ava instead of continuing on with the rest of the group. He has only known her for a few days but he cares about her more than his friends.

5 - Matthew 7:13

  • Lilith sacrificing herself to help Ava. After trying to kill her for the whole episode, it's completely unexpected, but it shows that Lilith is a Sister Warrior not just for her strength and prowess.

6 - Isaiah 30:20-21

  • Ava and an injured Mary, deciding that enough is enough, go their separate ways only for Ava to go back and help her out with an improvised splint. Of course, Ava then claims that she did it out of pity and not empathy.
  • A small Spanish village was plagued with wraith demons a year previous to the series before the OCS came to free them from the "eruption of evil." Since then, to Ava's discovery, the villagers spend each morning watching the sunrise.
Ava: Is it a special sunrise?
Villager: They're all special. There was a time when we weren't sure we would see another. So we appreciate it when it comes.

7 - Ephesians 4:22-24

  • Cardinal Duretti is now the head of the OCS, and he has former members who are either rejects or overly aggressive and violent so that he can have an organisation loyal to him. The ones who won't get in line are being Reassigned to Antarctica, and Sister Camila isn't sure that she can handle all of these new changes without her friends. Beatrice assures her that she can. Why? Because Camila is one of those special people who can make everyone else smile with her.
  • Beatrice choosing to stay and help Mary find evidence of Duretti's involvement in Shannon's murder.
  • It's a very brief, blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, but after their escape from the convent, while Beatrice and Camila are tending to her wounds, an injured Ava tries to hold Beatrice's hand.

8 - Proverbs 14:1

  • Beatrice, upset by the story of Sister Melanie and how much it relates to her own past, is reminded by Ava that what she is is beautiful.
  • When Ava expresses that her greatest fear is the loneliness that came with her quadriplegia, Beatrice assures her that will never happen. It wouldn't matter if she was quadriplegic, festooned with boils or a talking head in a bag, Ava would still have her friends.
Beatrice: And we will never leave you.
    • And this assurance gives Ava the strength to move past her fear and keep going through the stone she's trying to phase through.
  • After Ava successfully phases through 20 feet of stone, Beatrice's eyes shine with adoration for her. You might be forgiven for thinking that she had fallen in love with Ava right then and there.
    • And there is also Held Gaze between them, suggesting that the feeling may even be mutual.
  • Lilith expresses how sorry she is for trying to kill Ava and take the halo from her. What's even more heartwarming is that Ava had already forgiven her.
Ava: I'm really glad you're not dead anymore.
    Lilith: (smiling) Me too.

9 - 2 Corinthians 10:4

  • * Mother Superion finally admitting that Ava is worthy of the Halo after it is revealed that the Halo had rejected her.
Mother Superion: Once, a wise man told me that you are a miracle of the highest order. I should have listened.
    • Making the scene a little more heartwarming is Ava fixing Mother Superion's habit so that she could go on her last stand with a little dignity.
  • Ava and Beatrice preparing for Ava to try to enter the vault with Beatrice going through the checklist.
Beatrice: "Earpiece, Check. Tracking beacon, Check. Friend by your side... Check.
  • Mary reminding Lilith of who she is, after her return from Hell has left her a little...off, and the sheer passion of her speech shows that, despite the two being at odds for most of the series, she meant every. Single. Word of it. Whatever their differences might have been, whatever changes she might have been going through since her return from Hell, Lilith is still Mary's sister and she loves her dearly.
Mary: You are brave, you are loyal and you are way more giving than you want anyone to know. I have seen you put yourself into the path of pure evil to protect the rest of us! I've seen you lay down your life to keep your Sisters safe!
Lilith: (about to break down in tears) You called me heartless.
Mary: And then you had to go prove me wrong. Hmm?
  • Ava finally choosing fight over flight, in defiance of her natural instinct to run away from danger. Why? Because Beatrice needed her to.
    • And how does she explain her defiance to Beatrice? By repeating the Sister's line from Ephesians 6:11, showing that, for all her aloofness in that episode, she still took to heart everything Beatrice said.
Ava: Things change, when you realize not everything is about you.

10 - Revelation 2:10

  • While Ava is still in Adriel's tomb, who is the first person to be worried about her? Lilith. Granted, she is still a little rattled after her return from Hell and her slow transformation into...something, but considering that she once tried to murder Ava and cut the Halo from her back, it's still a touching sentiment.
  • As the Sisters get ready to fight Adriel and Ava sees many wraith demons appear to come to aid him they all stand together, with Ava leading the others in the OCS creed "In this life or the next." Whatever happens next they will stick together.
Mary: Fuck that. In this life!

Season 2

1 - Galatians 6:4-5
  • Ava helping Beatrice let her hair down and loosen up, leading to the two dancing all night in drunken bliss. All while the both of them exchange various exuberant looks. It's a perfect moment that shows how close the two have become after the Time Skip.
    • A particular scene shows Ava looking positively head over heels in love as she watches Beatrice dance.
  • Ava wanting to help Miguel and the Samaritans, all because she wants to do actual good to help defeat Adriel. They might've lost terribly in their first encounter, but that doesn't stop Ava from wanting to try.

2 - Colossians 3:9-10

  • While Beatrice is discussing Ava and being chatted up by another girl, she is advised to make it clear to Ava that she's not the only friend in the world. Beatrice's response? "Well, what if she is?" The girl simply smiles in understanding.
    Lucia: Poor thing.
    • Last episode, Ava said in a voiceover that she happens to make a spectacular Cuba Libre, AKA a highball Rum & Coke. Guess what Beatrice happens to be drinking when she's caught staring at Ava? The extra heartwarming part comes when one realises that the drink was also seen in the first episode, meaning Ava likely learned how to make a non-alcoholic version for Beatrice as she hadn't consumed alcohol.
  • After they have an argument, Ava and Beatrice reconcile extremely quickly, showing how close the two are. Beatrice also admits that helping Ava is just as much of a pleasure as it is her job.

3 - Luke 8:17

  • While they are on a mission, it's adorable to see Ava gleefully asking Beatrice to go sightseeing with her when they're in Madrid.
  • Ava has Vincent unconscious and at her mercy. So why doesn't she take him to the other nuns? Beatrice was hurt and needed her help.
  • Ava and Beatrice reuniting with Camila and Mother Superion. The reunion with Mother Superion is especially heartwarming, as her stoic demeanour visibly wavers for a bit as Ava embraces her.

5 - Mark 10:45

  • Camila knows that Beatrice is in love with Ava, and as Beatrice begins to deny her feelings she is quickly assured that there is no shame in loving another woman. That said, it quickly moves into Tear Jerker territory as Camila offers Beatrice a bit of advice:
Camila: It's easy to fall in love with a Warrior Nun. It's loving a Warrior Nun, that's the hard part. They're never yours. They never last.

7 - Psalms 116:15

  • Ava using the Halo to resurrect Mother Superion. It reignites a spark within the former Warrior Nun, who is downright beaming when she realizes the Halo called to her to heal her.
  • Ava offering to run away with Beatrice back to the Alps. To reiterate, this is after a terrible loss at the hands of Adriel and the apparent demise of Camila and Yasmine. Adriel's final plague is in motion, and Ava is willing to leave it all just to hide and be with Beatrice. Though it quickly turns into a Tear Jerker, it's heartwarming nonetheless to see how much Ava values Beatrice that she's happy to return to the Alps.
  • A drunken Vincent happens upon a piece of graffiti art of Ava hovering above a cowering Adriel (or, rather, stylised versions of them) just as she did when she tried to put the Crown of Thorns over his head in the previous episode. The art is captioned: "Falling Angel, Last Hope." Whoever created this, Ava clearly represents a saviour to them; one last hope for humanity to prevail over the darkness that has befallen it.
Ava: (when she sees the graffiti for herself) Is that...me?
Vincent: Clearly, you've made an impression.

8 - Jeremiah 29:13

  • At the beginning of the episode, Ava starts writing what is clearly a goodbye letter to Beatrice. She's interrupted before she can, but before that, she has an easily missable smile. No doubt remembering all the good times they shared.
  • Michael telling Jillian that thanks to her, a part of him will always exist in the Arc realm. For months Jillian has considered herself responsible for her son's disappearance. Him telling her that he's (in a sense) immortal thanks to her is no doubt a weight off her shoulders.
Michael: So please know that wherever I am, until the end of time, I will always love you, Mum.
  • While it's no doubt a Tear Jerker as Ava prepares to sacrifice herself, it's heartwarming to see Ava and Beatrice, the relationship teased all season, finally culminate in the kiss!
    • To elaborate, they kiss after Beatrice tries and fails to put the Crown of Thorns on Ava's head to prevent her from sacrificing herself. Beatrice was perfectly willing to likely doom the world by subduing Ava and preventing her sacrifice, all so she could protect the woman she loves. It's slightly selfish, yes, but heartwarming nonetheless.
    • The scene has been described as Ava's final moment of selfishness before her Heroic Suicide. It's utterly heartwarming (and heartwrenching) that the last thing she truly wanted to do was make sure the woman she loves knew how she felt.
    • The entire moment is just so soft and tender, from Beatrice wiping the tears off Ava's cheek to Ava gently kissing Beatrice on the forehead. It's a truly beautiful display of affection that is rarely seen in the medium.
  • When Michael sees Ava crying after being forced to leave Beatrice, he genuinely asks her if she's okay. He might be committed to the mission, but he's not completely heartless. He later tells her to stay behind him, aware that would make him an easy target. They might not have known each other for long, but it's clear the two are close companions.
  • The final shot of the season shows the Cruciform sword glowing blue, hinting that Ava just might not be dead after all.

Other

  • There is a fan theory that says Ava has been in love with Beatrice since at least some point in Proverbs 14:1, if not earlier, and knows that Beatrice loves her back. So why doesn't she act on it before The Big Damn Kiss? Because Ava understands her companion is still a Nun, and also has deep-seated issues with her sexual orientation, so she doesn't want to pressure or otherwise upset Beatrice into something she might not be ready for emotionally. It's not until Ava believes she won't ever get another chance that she finally decides to hell with it and goes for broke.
