  • Katherine, despite being on the side of the Boazanians, has a heart of gold. She's nothing but kind and attentive to Heinel, even when he rejects it. If it wasn't for her love, Heinel would be a mere memory. Katherine defied every action of the nobility, including that of Heinel's, just to keep him safe, and was the biggest obstacle to Zambajil's plan to have him killed.
  • As one Twitter user puts it:
"We hate [Katherine] in the beginning because she was the ultimate ass kisser and sychopant, only to realize in the end that her unreciprocated love is so endearing. It was a tragically beautiful, and beautifully tragic twist of love and affection....the original anime succeeeded in evoking frailty and unrequited love."
  • In an unaired script of the show, Katherine was to have a hornless little sister, Marlene. Katherine would protect her from the nobles, until she was caught and forced to flee to Earth in a Boazanian saucer.note  The necklace Katherine wears was supposed to have a photo of Marlene. The script also stated that Marlene was planned to be a love interest to Kenichi, and she would beseech her sister to not harm him.
  • Some Super Robot Wars games make sure that Heinel and Katherine have a happy ending. In Shin, after the defeat of Zuhl and Skullrook, Heinel and Katherine decide to go on a journey, and Kazuya remarks that he thinks the two will be happy together.
  • Jangal in his first appearance seems like a Big Red Devil, but over the course of the series, he's the closest thing to a brother Heinel could have. He states the reason he stays with Heinel is because of honour, but he has many chances to abandon Heinel and save his honour, including the events of episode 36, but refuses, which implies he has genuine feelings of companionship for Heinel.
  • Lozaria defying the Fantastic Racism of the horned nobles and promising to still love Gohl no matter what. She didn't care what she was taught, Gohl was still the man she loved. Had Heinel grown up in her presence, she would have rubbed off on him. She truly was too good for Boazania.
  • Kenichi, despite watching his mother and Hamaguchi die at the hands of the Boazanians, is nothing short of a Nice Guy who has empathy for all forms of life, be it human or alien. He refuses to attack Boazanians who can't fight back and is willing to see the good in them. This leads to some heavy Good Is Dumb moments, but Kenichi is as strong as he is kind, and can always take care of himself no matter what.
  • Despite Gohl's Dark and Troubled Past he was able to move on and meet Mitsuyo, and start a happy family with her. Mitsuyo never belittled him for his concerns like most humans did, and the two genuinely respected and loved one another. Not to mention, after Going Native on Earth, Gohl could finally live life without hiding his otherness and be respected despite his heritage. He made many friends that respected him and what he fought for, ready to aid him with their own skills.
  • Gohl himself was a Badass Bookworm who used his smarts to manufacture weapons for the slaves, and his spirit inspired General Dange, who was once a noble, to break off his horns and join the slave rebellion. Dange also encourages Gohl to see his children, but Gohl says that the liberation of Boazania takes priority. Dange is also lucky enough to meet Gohl's children (excluding Heinel) personally and tell them heroic tales of their father.
    • Dange being an honourable man not just by aiding the slaves, but his genuine A Father to His Men attitude towards all he mentored. It's likely Gilligan's struggle influenced him to join the slave liberation, knowing that no matter how skilled he was as a warrior, he would still be looked down by society for being a hornless Boazanian. It was Dange's kindness that made Gilligan second-guess his allegiance to Heinel and prevent further destruction on Earth.
  • This quote:
"Your father loved the earth, and everything about it. That's why he created Voltes V, to protect it."
    Professor Hamaguchi
    • It doubles as a Tearjerker because it was one of the last lines Hamaguchi would ever get to say to Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi.
  • Tako, apart from being a cute robot, is genuinely a good friend to Hiyoshi. When Hiyoshi asks them if he's okay after he disposes of a bomb, Tako kisses him on the cheek and tells him they are because Hiyoshi made them big and strong.
  • The entire dynamic of the Voltes Team. While they were originally conscripted (or Press-Ganged in Ippei's case) based on their skills, they have a genuine bond for each other and you can feel the genuine appreciation they have for each other in every episode, from small things like Hiyoshi calling Megumi "Megumi-neesan" to big things like Ippei thanking Kenichi for protecting his horse, Eiffel. The gang are seen fishing together and sharing their interests with one another, and choose to stay together even after the threat against Earth has been neutralized.
    • When you think about it, each member of the Voltes team has lost someone they love (a relative like General Oka/Mitsuyo, or a mentor figure like Hamaguchi) in the conflict. That means that potentially, the only family they have left is each other.
    • It can explain why the Go brothers were quick to welcome Heinel, in spite of everything. He was still their brother, and they had already lost enough family members.
  • Ippei's development from a cynical Jerkass to a Cool Big Bro figure to Kenichi. At the start of the series, he's a completely different person, mocking the Go brothers for being weak and acting brash in front of the only female of the team (who he's implied to have a crush on). After he learns that Kenichi isn't any different from him, Ippei becomes more sweet and protective, going as far as to punch Nakamura for suggesting that Kenichi is a traitor based on his Boazanian blood, and eagerly agreeing to save Kentaro Go despite earlier portraying apathy towards the matter. Ippei truly had a Hidden Heart of Gold under all that bravado, something Hiyoshi comments on at the end of episode 3.
  • In Ippei's flashback as he grew up in America, he's shown with Eiffel as a pony. For someone who's a gruff Byronic Hero on the outside, it's an adorable scene and emphasizes how deep down, he's still that little boy.
  • In episode 4, as Kenichi and Daijirou are training, the two brothers stall a mission because Daijirou wants to show Kenichi how to master the Butterfly technique. Even though Kenichi is badly injured, he begs Daijirou to keep training. Daijirou is worried for his sake, but obliges, even though most in the situation would have called it quits. It's a testament to how strong the bond of the brothers is.
  • In episode 23, Daijirou shows his soft side by caring for a stray puppy. He has a flashback to losing Mitsuyo as he speculates the its backstory. The same puppy comes to save the heroes from the Monster of the Week, Garus.
  • Even though Nakamura is distraught and insults the Go brothers, the Voltes Team still display empathy to him because they know how it's like to be orphaned by the hands of the Boazanians. They even plead to Sakonji to give him another chance. Nakamura also feels ashamed for his behaviour once he realizes that the Voltes Team and him are no different and apologizes to Kenichi.
  • Even though all of Boazania hated Heinel, his grandparents were nothing short of loving and showered him with affection.
