Definition of "Cool Big Sis"!

While (or perhaps because) the story can be pretty bleak at times, the good moments between the characters only stand out more.

    "Escape from Grace Field" Arc
  • Conny's talk about her stuffed rabbit Bernie. Although the rabbit itself has some terrifying implications later, at the moment it's just a stuffed toy that is clearly beloved by its owner.
  • This extra from volume 2 that shows how close Don was to Conny. Overlaps with Tearjerker.
  • The omake chapters, showing life in the orphanage when Emma and co. were still little kids. The kids are constantly fighting a battle with Mama in the series, so seeing them beforehand, when they were still young and innocent and Mama was still their beloved caretaker, is a nice break.
    • Notably, there's one where Norman catches a severe cold and is put in quarantine. Emma keeps sneaking in to see him, and Ray is not helping by telling her things like Idiots Cannot Catch Colds, eventually leading Mama to tie up Emma and gag Ray. Then Emma comes up with a solution everyone can be happy with - a paper-cup phone.
  • Chapter 36. While watching the kids follow through the escape plan successfully, Ray has an imaginary talk with Norman, asking if he's amazed. Ray had given up the hope of freeing all his family and even himself, having dedicated his efforts on saving his two closest friends. And now? The thing he thought was impossible, that Norman had serious doubts about the success of, is working. The conversation ends with Ray telling Norman that Norman won, and he takes one of the last children to safety himself.
  • One of the younger kids freaks at the prospect of going across the chasm, and for REALLY good reason. Most adults would have problems building up the courage to commit. Then Ray goes full big brother, and has her tied to him so they both go together.
  • Chapter 37. Isabella silently sees her adoptive children off as they escape, accepting her loss and wishing for their safety, realizing that they achieved together what she couldn't by herself. She gathers up the ropes and any and all evidence of how they escaped in order to send her superiors on a wild goose chase since they wouldn't be able to figure out how the kids escaped or even that they already escaped. As the Grace Field House burns down, she sings her remaining children to sleep.

  • After their desperate escape in the forest, having to fight the dangerous wildlife and to flee from the pursuers from Grace Field, the children finally meet friendly faces: Mujika and Sonju, demons that don't eat humans because of a religious taboo of their faith. Mujika and Sonju help the children escape their pursuers and then travel with them during six day, teaching them about the wildlife, medicinal plants and survival skills. The children, especially Emma, strike up a friendship with Mujica. Chapter 50 is even rightly called "Friends", and features Emma and Mujika bonding over pictures and reminiscences of Emma's siblings.
  • The seventh volume, in spite of ETR3M8's hostility, is a huge Breather Episode. After having to outwit Isabella and to escape from the demons of Grace Field sent after them, the children finally reach a safe hideout. Seeing them enjoying having the possibility to bath, sleep in nice beds or simply relax together after the ordeal of their escape is surprisingly heartwarming.
    • Emma's Imagine Spot in chapter 55 is an adorable reminder of what they're all fighting for.
  • Lucas breaks down crying in relief when he learns that ETR3M8 managed to survive and get back to the shelter.
  • Chapter 72: By hearing the recording of William Minerva's advices and words of encouragement, Lucas and Emma receive the confirmation that he truly was what he appeared from the beginning - an ally trying to help them -, right after the discovery of the hunting ground of Goldy Pond casted doubts on his true intentions
Emmma: As we thought, Mr. Minerva... did this for us!
  • An extra scene of Volume 9 shows Paula, Gillian and Sonia clean and offer Emma new clothes, then Sandy checks her cut ear and makes her a new haircut to hide the scar.
  • The numerous flashbacks showing Lucas' father-child relationship with the children of Goldy Pond.
    • Chapter 85's cover shows Lucas and Oliver happy together while building something.
    • The beginning of Chapter 95 shows the genesis of the plan to destroy Goldy Pond. When Lucas asked them if they want to flee with him, Oliver, Paula and Zack refused because they want to destroy Goldy Pond to stop the poachers' hunting of children. Lucas chooses to stay and help them. Cue group hug.
  • Lucas' and ETR3M8's reunion. A very satisfying hug indeed.
  • When Emma's been impaled through the abdomen and is struggling to go on she imagines various people she's known and lost encouraging her. The last one, and the one who pulls her into focus, is Mama. Emma doesn't know what Isabella said or did after the escape but on some level does still care about her.
  • Chapter 96: Emma wakes up after recovering from her injuries... and is greeted by all the other children of Grace Field and Goldy Pond's seniority, as well as Lucas and Yugo who reveals his name to her
  • Chapter 98: Adam has added Emma's number to his vocabulary.
  • Chapter 109: Yugo's spirit visits Emma one last time, giving her well needed encouragement and thank you before saying good-bye. He's later shown with Lucas finally reuniting with their family.
  • Chapter 119: After almost two years of the latter thinking the former is dead, Norman and Emma FINALLY reunite. After an emotional and much-deserved embrace, Emma introduces Norman to the big, beautiful family that they made during the journey, and once the other Grace Field children see that their friend is alive and well, they crowd around him for a big, tearful group hug.
    • Ray's reaction is especially touching: when he approaches his childhood pal for the first time in two years, he stoically smacks him in the face before bawling his eyes out, then proceeds to lock Norman and Emma in a warm embrace, demanding that the former never "die" again.
  • Chapter 121: What's one of the things Emma, Norman and Ray do after the meeting? They play chess and don't stop until they all fall asleep together with their arms around their shoulders.
  • Chapter 164: During the purge of the demons with Mujica's blood, a pair of soldiers do their best to comfort two siblings whose parents have just been rounded up. When the soldiers' superiors ask them if the children were in the square while Mujica was offering blood, they actively lie and say that the kids just got lost.
  • The reveal that Aishe was actually Happily Adopted by a demon. He took pity on her upon seeing her facial defect, similar to his own, leading him to sneak her out of the disposal line. At first, he raised her as a pet but soon began seeing her as a daughter. His final moments were thinking of Aishe.
  • Chapter 174: Emma invites Isabella and the rest of the Mamas to the surface after her Heel–Face Turn against Peter Ratri, despite Isabella fully expecting not to be forgiven. The rest of the children swarm Isabella in an embrace, driving her to tears.
  • Chapter 175:
    • Leuvis chooses not to become king, but instead selects Mujica, a vote that is supported by both the priests and the citizens.
    • With the demons agreeing to end the farms and their dependence on human meat, the children are finally free.
    • When everyone realizes that they're free, we see the dead, including Krone and Leslie, smiling at the camera.
    • Emma rushing out to tearfully reunite with Phil after all these years of waiting.
  • Chapter 180:
    • Emma giving up "[her] everything" so that her family can live and thrive.
    • Weirdly, the One gets a moment in his/it's own odd way. The One is quite clearly pleased with all Emma has done but is still bound by his own rules. He could have demanded Emma's life, but instead only took her memories.
    • Emma being beckoned by the calls of her name from her friends and family in her dreams, even if she can't remember their faces.
    • Emma and the Old Man bonding over what they lost, with Emma breaking down because the Old Man's losses remind her of something but she's not sure what.
    • The Old Man adopting Emma.
  • Chapter 181:
    • Just as Ray is about to agree to move onto the next area without realizing Emma is only yards away, Conny's ghost tugs on him while the ghosts of Yuugo and Isabella look on. Hearing a ghostly voice call out to him, Ray follows in that direction, having some sort of feeling that he has to keep looking.
    • Despite having her memory of her friends gone, Emma still feels the connection she has with her friends.
    • The Old Man waiting on a nearby bench while Emma has her reunion with her family.
