  • The mayor of Colleville (Bourvil) greeting the British on Sword Beach with champagne.
    "Welcome! Welcome to you all!"
  • The French admiral tells his crews that they will have to open fire on their homeland.
"Soon we shall be engaged in battle. To drive the enemy out, we must fire on our homeland. That is the price of liberty. Vive la France!"
    • Basically, everything the Free French and French resistance members do in this movie: they're fighting to free their homeland, and you feel it every second they're on screen.
  • The British soldier who is worried about his wife as she gets ready to have a baby, even though he knows the baby isn't his. Question his intelligence if you must, but you can't question his love.
  • US paratrooper Dutch Schultz who has been lost since he dropped stumbles across shot down RAF pilot David Campbell and the pair share a cigarette together, no two men in the world happier to see one another.
