    Prologue
  • As soon as the 6 survivors take their first steps into the Mushroom Kingdom, Makoto gains the biggest smile on his face and excitedly explains the plot of the Mario games to the others.

  • When Makoto gains the Raccoon Power-Up, Kyoko immediately begins petting his tail while calling him "cute".

  • When Makoto gets upset over not being able to fly with the Raccoon Power-Up, Kyoko helps make him feel better by petting his tail.

  • When Byakuya makes Makoto the group's negotiator, backhandedly saying that he'll "fit right in with the other freaks", Hiro and Aoi back up Makoto and call Byakuya out on his rude behavior.

    Collecting The Magenti-Star Pieces (Chapters 1 - 3)
Chapter 1
  • While watching Makoto admire Grass Land, Kyoko thinks to herself how he deserves to be happy after everything he's gone through during the Killing School Life.

  • When Kyoko wonders if Makoto heard her muttering to herself about wanting him to see her panties, her thoughts start to drift towards thinking about how cute he looks.
Kyoko: (Thinking) He…he heard me?! …Of course, those cute fuzzy Tanuki Ears must increase his hearing…those cute fuzzy ears and that soft, furry tail…and that totally dense, confused look on his face…they all make him look so cute! [...] Get it together, Kyoko! You’re here on a mission, and you’ve wasted enough time with this Bunny power-up fiasco, so get serious! You can ogle at how cute Makoto looks as a Raccoon Boy later!

  • While noticing Makoto's anger over the Lakitu, Kyoko gets worried about him and thinks to herself how she prefers the "sweet, kind, happy, adorable Makoto".

  • Then there's Makoto's absolute glee over (what he thought was) Yoshi, even asking if he could hug him. Even Kyoko admits to herself that "Yoshi's" cute.
    • During this moment, Kyoko has a moment where she pouts over Makoto not giving her the same affection he's given to "Yoshi".

  • When Makoto hugs and praises Kyoko over beating the Chain-Chomp and Lakitu, she begins blushing over the affection she's being given.

  • The chapter ends with the two riding on "Yoshi" back to the Mushroom Kingdom, during which Kyoko tells Makoto how she'll never forget their adventure together.
    Kyoko: This has been a very…strange day…
Makoto: Yeah…it’s not every day you find yourself in one of your favorite video games…but I’d say it was worth it, wouldn’t you?
Kyoko: As strange as this whole adventure has been…I won’t ever forget it…because you were there to share it with me…
Makoto: Th…thank you…I liked sharing this adventure with you too, Kyoko…

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

  • After making fun of a shrunken Hiro, understandably still mad with him over what he did to Sakura, Aoi admits to herself that might've taken her teasing too far and doing it as payback. Thinking about what Makoto would say, she apologizes to Hiro, and they agree to a truce.

  • When Aoi accidentally spooks a Shy Guy, she checks up on it and even gives him back the mask he dropped. Afterwards, she befriends him and gives him the name "Heiho-kun". While he wants to use her and Hiro to obtain the Magenti-Star piece, Heiho-kun gets attached to Aoi and calls her a beautiful goddess.

  • The reason that Heiho-kun pulls a Heel–Face Turn and betrays Captain Wart is due to the fact that Aoi's the only person that has treated him with genuine kindness.

  • After Captain Wart and crew are defeated, Heiho-kun decides to join Aoi and Hiro on their way back to Peach's Castle. He even shows Aoi his true face, which she finds adorable.
Hiro: So, um…can you show me what you look like too?
Aoi: No way! You did nothing but doubt and insult him! You’re not much better than the minions who bullied him! The secret of his adorable face is my privilege and mine alone.

    Assembling The Magenti-Star (Chapter 4)
  • The chapter starts with Makoto and Kyoko riding on "Yoshi" on their way back to Peach's Castle, with Kyoko peacefully sleeping on Makoto's back.

  • Arriving back to Peach's Castle, Makoto tries to wake Kyoko up, only for the sleep-dazed detective to refuse while speaking in the third person.
Makoto: Kyoko…Kyoko, we’re here. Time to wake up…
    Kyoko: No…Kyoko comfortable…she sleep here!
    • This leads to Makoto tickling Kyoko awake, though this causes her to knock Makoto off of "Yoshi". When she checks to make sure he's okay, laying his head on her lap, he pretends that he fell off on his own so she wouldn't feel bad about accidentally knocking him off.
Kyoko: (thinking) …He’s lying… Calm down, Kyoko, no need to overreact. He must have a reason for lying, just like he had a reason for keeping Sakura’s betrayal a secret. Let’s see…I remember hearing Makoto’s voice…and then I remember this tickling sensation…I thought it was just a dream, but maybe…maybe he tickled me awake with his tail and I… I pushed him off…and he lied about it so I wouldn’t feel guilty…that selfless boy…
    • After this, the two would hold a Longing Look and Almost Kiss until they're interrupted by Captain Toad.
Makoto: (thinking) What the…was Kyoko…going to…kiss me? But why? I’m just an average boy who can’t even control his own powers! What would a girl as amazing as Kyoko Kirigiri see in me?!
Kyoko: (thinking) What the hell?! Why was I about to kiss Makoto?! I mean, sure he’s cute, especially with that fluffy, tickly Racoon Tail, those fuzzy Tanuki ears, those bright green eyes and that hopeful smile…no, bad Kyoko!

  • When Makoto tells Captain Toad about his and Kyoko's adventure and praises "Yoshi", Kyoko thinks to herself that Makoto should be focused on her before correcting herself and thinking how he should be focusing on the mission.
Kyoko: (thinking) This is cute and all, but you need to be focusing on me… mission! You need to be focusing on the mission! Kami, what’s wrong with me?! Am I really so in love with him that I can’t keep my head out of the clouds?!

  • When Captain Toad reveals that the Yoshi that Makoto and Kyoko met isn't the same Yoshi that travels with Mario, Makoto reassures "Yoshi" that that fact doesn't matter to him and still appreciated his help.

  • When Aoi and Hiro arrive at Peach's Castle and sees Makoto and Kyoko, Aoi says that Kyoko looks cute with bunny ears. When she asks Makoto if he agrees, he shyly agrees with Aoi, causing Kyoko to blush.

  • It's revealed that outside of the Mario games, Captain Toad actually married Toadette and have children together.

  • When Goombas start coming out of Peach's Castle, with everyone unaware of their Heel–Face Turn under Byakuya's rule, the first thing Heiho-kun does is to try to protect Aoi.

  • When Makoto runs away from the group, fueled by his insecurities over not being able to master his power up while the others (who have no experience with the Mario games) were easily able to and his belief that he acts as The Load to them, Kyoko follows him and gives him some much need reassurance.
Kyoko: Makoto, you might not believe it, but you’re just as much an Ultimate as the rest of us. You belong with us…and if you don’t believe me, you can believe my Father. [...] While I was investigating before the final Class Trial, I looked through your Student Profile, and apparently he had written some notes in it. Apparently the Steering Committee wanted to abolish the Ultimate Lucky Student position; they felt that Luck was a waste of research. But my Father…he pushed back. He believed that Luck was a talent worthy of Hope’s Peak’s time and money, and as a result the Steering Committee relented. I don’t have many happy memories of Jin Kirigiri, but he saw you as an Ultimate and fought so you could stay, and I’ll always respect him for that. [...] And even if that wasn’t the case, that still wouldn’t make you average, Makoto. You’re the most positive, down to earth guy I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting. If it wasn’t for you and your infectious hope, Junko would have won and none of us would be alive to experience all the adventures you led us on in this Mushroom Kingdom. And I have a confession to make… The reason I called you the Ultimate Hope when you defeated Junko…is that…to me…you’re MY hope. You gave me so much hope, Makoto…
    Makoto: R…really? I…did all that?
Kyoko: Yes, you did… (thinking) And if you play your cards right, you’ll even get a Princess of your own…because I love you, Makoto Naegi! You adorable little Racoon!
Makoto: Sorry, Kyoko…I acted like a child earlier. But you’re right… you’re right, Kyoko. This was an amazing adventure way better than any video game…because I got to spend it with you…and I’ll never forget it!
    Kyoko: We’ll never forget it.

    Rescuing Kyoko (Chapters 5 & 6)
Chapter 5
  • When Captain Toad reveals how the Raccoon Suit's flight ability works (thinking about something or someone that makes the user's heart flutter), Makoto tries thinking about his family, but it doesn't work. It's only when his thoughts drift towards Kyoko is when he's finally able to fly and realize his feelings for her.
Makoto: I…I did it…as soon as I admitted that I love Kyoko…I began to fly. I’m flying…I’M ACTUALLY FLYING! ALRIGHT KYOKO, I’M COMING TO SAVE YOU! THEN I’LL TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU…my beautiful Princess…

  • When Bowser reveals his plan to make Kyoko his bride, she's obviously disgusted by the idea and thinks to herself how there's only one person she'd want to marry, who's obviously implied to be Makoto.

  • What finally causes Kyoko to fight Bowser? Him insulting Makoto.
Kyoko: (thinking) How dare you…HOW DARE YOU! You dare to belittle the boy I love with insults? Well, that shrimp has more power inside of him than you’ll ever have! And I won’t sit here and take it while you laugh at him and make fun of him!
(Kyoko approaches Bowser and punches him in the jaw)
Bowser: Not smart, little girl… Now I’m gonna have to punish you!
Kyoko: Bring it on, Godzilla! (thinking) I have to win! Not just because he kidnapped me like some possession, not just because I need to get the Magenti-Star back so we can all go home…but most importantly… to defend Makoto’s honor!

Chapter 6

  • The first thing that Makoto does when Bowser willing gives up Kyoko is to hug her and make sure she's okay.
Kyoko: Don’t worry, Makoto, I’m fine. After all… You came for me…

  • After being beaten by Makoto and Kyoko, Bowser begins to fall into despair. Makoto, being who he is, cheers him up by reminding him of his loyal subjects, his children, and how there are people who think he's awesome. This almost causes Bowser to pull a Heel–Face Turn.
Bowser: (to Makoto) …Why are you trying to make me feel better?
Kyoko: Because he’s Makoto Naegi, the Ultimate Hope… He confronts despair wherever it goes, and he does his best to befriend anybody and everybody, so that they will never be corrupted by despair. (thinking) …One of many reasons why I love him so much…

  • After Bowser gives Makoto and Kyoko the Magenti-Star back and leaves to try and marry Peach again, Makoto suggest the two fly off of Bowser's Castle when the exit gets blocked off. Kyoko's naturally concerned about this, but when Makoto asks her if she trusts him, she says that she always does.

  • This leads to Kyoko learning how to fly and her and Makoto playfully chasing each other, something that Kyoko says is a special moment for her that she'll never forget. This leads to...
    Makoto: (thinking) …It’s time I told her… (out-loud) …I think I can top that.
Kyoko: H…how could you possibly top this? What could be more special than flying in the sky…mmph!
Kyoko: (thinking) Oh…oh kami! Makoto…Makoto’s kissing me! He’s really kissing me!
    [...]
Kyoko: (thinking) Don’t just float there; tell him you love him, Kirigiri! (out-loud) You were right; this definitely tops flying. Thank you for that, Makoto. I…I love you, Makoto.

  • After meeting back up, the group decide to head back to Peach's Castle. During this, Makoto and Kyoko playfully chase each other again as they write "Makoto ♥ Kyoko" in the sky.
