- The conversation that Ma Fanny and Sally have after their orthodox neighbors disown their daughter for her romance and out-of-wedlock pregnancy with a gentile. Ma Fanny, refusing to take part in the Daniels' sitting shiva for their "dead" daughter, tells Sally's mother that if they knew what it was like to really lose a child, they wouldn't be so quick to turn their back on their daughter. After they've left and Sally's helping her grandmother out with her knitting, she asks Ma Fanny what she meant, and Ma Fanny reveals that before Sally's mother was born she lost a baby boy to what we'd now call sudden infant death syndrome. Sally thanks her grandmother for telling her, saying that she understands a little better now, and Ma Fanny tells her she's worth a million... "more, even."
