Heartwarming / Song of a Northern Sorcerer

Go To

  • Nox comes to form a genuine friendship with Ned Stark, something that he explicitly claims to have officially formed with less than ten people in his entire life.
  • Nox finds love with a humble serving girl Nyra.
  • Jon's admiration of his Master, seeing him as almost a second father.
  • Robb & Jon's bond as true brothers. Just how strong is it? Robb never saw Jon anything less as his true brother even before Jon's true parentage was revealed. This does not change after the truth is revealed. If anything, it became stronger than before. On Jon's end, he would never ever consider betraying Robb & would faithfully serve him for the rest of his days. When bestowed the Stark name as long as he didn't usurp Robb's position as Warden of the North, Jon proclaims that he would never betray Robb at all.
Robb: I'm going after my brother, Robb said with a conviction that Ned had rarely heard from his son. No matter who his mother and father is, no matter his name or status, Jon is still my brother. And he will always have a place by my side. And I will always stay by his!
Robert: Therefore, I, King Robert Baratheon, First of My Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, do hereby grant you the name Stark. So as long as you do not seek your brother's place as future Warden of the North.
Jon: I- I thank you, your grace. And Robb, my brother, he is the future Warden of the North and my father's heir. And I will spend my life serving him.
  • Jon finally being legitimatized as a Stark. Something he wanted for his whole life.
All [Jon's] life, there was one thing he ever wanted. And now, he had that one thing. To be recognized as a Stark. A true Stark.
  • Arianne may have first sought out Jon for his abilities and how he could help her take rulership of Dorne, but after getting to know him as a person, she had genuinely fallen for him as a person.
  • Chapter 23: Willas' growing elation at his leg finally being fixed properly, having forgotten what it was like to walk without a limp.
'Willas: There's...There's no pain. No clicking. No...nothing. Gods, it's been so long I've forgotten just what this feels like to walk without at least a dull ache in my bones.
    • Margaery & Garlan just beaming, happy for their older brother being able to walk without aid.
  • Chapter 24:
    • When Daemon learns that he had a daughter with Darcy, he immediately requests to be released from being a Squire under Oberyn and uproots his life completely from Dorne so that he can be with Darcy and his daughter.
    • Jon bonding with his great uncle Aemon.
  • Robert in Chapter 25 finally realizes how much of an indifferent parent he's been when he sees the aftermath of Ser. Prance's (Tommen's fawn) death. He then comforts Myrcella & Tommen & apologizes to them for his negligence towards them & promises to be a better father from then on. When Myrcella asks if she & Tommen need protecting from Joffrey & Cersei, Robert promises to protect the two from them as well. He does however point out that he can't protect them forever & they have to grow strong. When he asks what their House words are, Tommen immediately says House Lannister's words, much to Robert & Myrcella's annoyance. Robert, holding in his temper says this:
Robert: Those are the words of that bi– of your mother's House. Of House Lannister. You two are Baratheons. Ours is the Fury. Those are our words children. When the dragons tried to put us down, we put them down. We do not back down from a challenge or a fight. We meet it head on and show the world that we are not afraid of any challenge that might be put in front of us. We do not fear the storm that comes. We are the storm. That is why ours is the fury."
    • Robert instructs Ser Oakhart to have a servant bring the children's playmates to them. And then to go to the kitchens and prepare whatever they wanted, making some progress towards Myrcella, who is hopeful towards Robert & Tommen not wanting to let Robert go.
  • Not wanting to start their relationship based off secrets, Jon tells Arianne & Ygritte the truth of his parentage. Ygritte accepts the explanation on the spot, declaring that it doesn't change who Jon is. Arianne says that many in Dorne would condemn Jon for his very existence but she would not be one of them. She then asks Jon if he plans to push his claim to the Throne & when Jon says no, Arianne supports his decision & promises to stay by Jon's side.
Arianne: If that is what you want…Then that is what you will have, my wolf. It won't be an easy road for us no matter which path we choose, but together we can face any enemy. Ygritte will take care of those who come at us from afar. Jon will handle those who get close to us. And I will handle the enemies we cannot see. But no matter what or who we face, we will do it together.
  • Chapter 29: Robert taking the time of his day to spend time with Tommen, teaching him how to shoot a bow & congratulating him each time when he hits closer to the center ring. Tommen himself starting to stay closer to Robert's side almost constantly.
    • Myrcella orders a new wardrobe with the colors of House Baratheon & has her old dresses (with the colors of House Lannister) stripped of anything of value & given to an orphanage & the valuables themselves were sold to purchase food for the orphans. This clearly demonstrates Myrcella's kind & sweet nature. And Robert himself was so proud of her!
  • Gerion & Joy's loving parental relationship in Chapter 30 is bound to pull at a few heartstrings.
  • Tyrion, not wanting Joy to fall into the same position that he was in for something that was out her control, firmly tells her to forget his father's orders & simply enjoy life that she wants to & not by someone else's.
Tyrion: You let your father and I deal with him. You just focus on learning everything you can about this wonderful power of yours, my dear. Try and have a little fun while you're here as well. I've seen you, the young Stark girl, and Lady Baratheon out playing while everyone else went north. Keep that up, my dear. Live your life the way you want to. Not the way someone else wants you to. (Thinking) At least this way one member of our pride will be able to live a happy life.
  • Gerion & Joy deducing that Anna is Tyrion's daughter and promising to keep the secret, with Joy promising to look after her.
  • Chapter 30: Daenarys promises Dorea that no one will ever touch her again, unless she wills it so. So she 'persuades' Illyrio to give her the debt contract & then burns it, swearing that she will never own another person. Then this conversation happens:
Dany: Your life, Dorea, is your own. Should you wish to stay with me, I would have you, and I will shelter and protect you as best I can. Should you desire to find your own way in life, I will respect your decision and will even help you find a way to a new life away from the cruelty of the slave masters and the magisters. But make no mistake, the choice is yours, Dorea.
The woman looked near to tears as she almost immediately went to her knees before Dany.
Dorea: I will serve you, my lady – Princess Daenerys Targaryen. From this day till my last. I am yours. Not…Not because you bought me or set me free…but because I choose to do so.
Dany: And I promise you, Dorea, that as long as I breathe you will always have a place by my side and that I will ask of you no deed that I am unwilling to do myself.
  • Chapter 31: Arianne kept her promise to Hilda & credited her for the creation of the water pump.
    • Arianne was also prepared to drown Ser Deziel Dalt when the latter insulted Jon but refrained herself from doing so.
  • Chapter 31: Robb taking Talisa for a picnic & then proposing to her. She says yes.
Robb: Tell me truthfully that you don't want this, Talisa. Tell me that you do not have some feelings for me. That you truly have no wish to become the next Lady of Winterfell. That you have no wish to see what children we might have and raise and love together. Tell me to stop, Talisa. To truly stop…and that will be the end of it.
Talisa: Gods damn you, Robb. You're a pain in my arse. You know that, right?
Robb: You might want to be careful with a phrase like that now, my love. I've learned a few…interesting ways to respond to that phrase.
Talisa: Begin acting like that man-whore from Dorne or thinking that I will stand to have us in a similar situation as to the one your brother has stumbled into…and you will find yourself without me by your side or in your bed ever again.
Robb: I can live with those terms, my lady. So, does that mean 'yes'?
Talisa: Aye, Robb Stark, it's a yes.
  • Chapter 32: After he tells Jon he's dying of consumption, Robert waves Jon off not wanting to deal with Crown matters today, saying that while he knows that he has to deal with it later, there is something else he must truly do before any of that. And that is spending time with Myrcella and Tommen as a father.
    • Despite the strained relationship between the two, Robert also wanted to spend time with Joffrey as a parent. Too bad Joffrey doesn't feel the same way.
Jon: Not just because the Realm needed Robert but because Jon needed Robert.
    • Mixed with Tearjerker. Jon attempts to do everything he can to save Robert, even going as far as to ask Nox for help, not because he's the King but because he's Jon's son is all but name.
  • Chapter 32: Jon and Arianne are officially betrothed and they are happy about it.
    • Arianne telling Jon that whether he remains as himself or as Jaehaerys, her place is by his side, whether as his Princess or as his Queen.
  • Chapter 33: Karsi being well aware of the stigma bastards receive, doesn't want gold or titles but to simply raise him in the North and sending Garlan a letter to inform him of this & wanting him to be a part of their son's life.
    • After just finding out she gave birth to his son, Garlan quickly jumps to defend Karsi from his father's accusations.
    • Willas checking on Garlan's welfare because he cares for his little brother and not their family's reputation.
  • Jon loving Arianne and Ygritte equally.
Jon: "I love you both equally, Ygritte," It was the truth, he truly did love both Arianne and Ygritte, and he could no longer see a future where he was not without both. "Please don't ever think I prefer her over you…comparing you to her… It's like comparing the beauties of sunrises and sunsets."
  • Jon firmly telling Wylis Manderly that he will always by a Northernman through and through.
Wylis: "Whitewolf. Or should it be 'sandwolf' now?"
Jon: "No, I will always be a 'whitewolf'. No matter if I am in the North or not, I will always carry the North in my heart. And I will always be one of the First Men and a man of House Stark first and foremost."
  • Talisa giving Robb a firm pep talk about meeting her parents and telling him that even if her parents don't approve of him, she will not change her mind about choosing her new life.
Talisa: "None of that. You've faced down assassins, wildlings, creatures of legends, your own bannerman, and a nightmarish training by the Sorcerer that I can't even begin to comprehend. You can handle meeting my family. And trust me Robb, my father and mother will approve of you. My mother will because she will think you are of high enough status for me. And my father will respect the fact that you have distinguished yourself on the field of battle. And even if they don't approve of you…Well, it doesn't matter. I've chosen you, Robb. I've chosen the North. And nothing and no one, not even my own family, will change my mind."
  • Inspite of their differences, Malaquo Maegyr does sincerely loves his daughter Talisa and wouldn't dream of missing her wedding.
Malaquo: "Is that really such a mystery, Talisa?" the Triarch asked. "Despite our disagreements, you are still my eldest, and only, daughter. Do you really think that I would not move the heavens and earth to be here to see you wed?"
    • Maliki rushing to his big sister Talisa who embracing him. The little boy excitably speaking to her so fast that Robb couldn't pick up what the two were saying.
    • Robb warmly greeting Maliki.
  • Dany being happy in her marriage to Drogo. It helps that their relationship didn't get off to *ahem* a rough start.
  • Chapter 34: More of a general series of moments, but the obvious love and camaraderie between the entire Stark family and their friends.
Ned: Standing upon the covered walkway connecting the main keep of Winterfell to the adjacent buildings, Lord Eddard Stark watched with a slight smile on his face as in the yard below his children interacted with one another and their guests as they taught the youngest amongst them how to properly shoot a bow. Or rather, the former wildling Ygritte scolded and lectured Joy Lannister, Shireen Baratheon, his own son Bran and his daughter Sansa how to use the bow while his eldest children and Arya watched on, chuckling and throwing out words of encouragement or teases to the others as they tried to hit the target that'd been set up on the far side of the training yard. Robb was standing with one of his arms wrapped around the shoulders of his wife Talisa, the two still acting like anxious newlyweds eager for their bedding even though they'd been wedded and bedded for nearly two moons now. And strangely enough, Theon and Jon were conversing calmly with each other, and even trading the occasional jab at one another. Or rather Theon was primarily leading the conversation, seeing as how his son Jon seemed to have difficulty taking his eyes off his wildling lover, or rather her backside at least. The scene was…perfect. And it brought a smile to his face as he watched his children who had already been forced to face so much laugh and play as if they were still just that. Children.
  • Ned entrusting Jon as Steward of Winterfell, as he cannot think of a better man to serve by Robb's side.
Ned: "Your brother trusts you implicitly, and you know the workings of the North as well as Robb and Talisa. And while you are betrothed to Princess Arianne and will one day reside in Dorne, until that time I can think of no one better to help your brother as Steward of Winterfell than yourself."
    • Robb displaying his support for Jon, as he can't think of a person he wants to have his back than his brother.
  • After Dany professes herself to be a monster for standing by and doing nothing as Viserys was killed and feeling nothing for it, Jon gives her a You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech:
Jon: "No, you're not." Jon immediately said, adding more sensation to his touch and finally drawing her eyes to him. "A monster would not have felt 'nothing'. A monster would've been gleeful at watching such a display. And a monster sure as hells would not be feeling remorseful as you are now. No, Dany. While I might not fully agree with the…manner of his death, it was unavoidable. And you are no more a monster than I. I told you of what happened to the Maesters, right? How my father ordered them all nailed through the ankles and hung upside down and left to die? We killed dozens, hells, maybe a hundred or more that day like that. Both older and younger than myself. And unlike you, I didn't feel nothing. I felt satisfaction at seeing those who'd wronged me and my family die in such a manner. Knowing that, do you think I'm a monster Dany?"
    Dany: "No."
Jon: "Then neither are you, Dany." Jon insisted, trying to give her a reassuring smile. "You are not a monster, Dany. You are in fact one of the strongest and most caring women I have ever met."
  • Jon tells Dany that she's not the last Targaryen in the world: First by telling her of Maester Aemon and (hesitantly) himself, which greatly heartens Dany.
  • Robert proudly introducing his youngest Tommen to Ned Stark, who Robert calls The most honorable man you will ever meet.
  • Robert meets his bastard son Gendry. And while there is some awkward tension among them, Robert is pleased to see his son and tells him to call him Robert or father, even as he admits he's been a bad one these past few years. Robert then introduces Gendry to Tommen.
Robert: "Gendry is your brother, Tommen. But he wasn't birthed by your mother. "He's my bastard son, but that doesn't make him any less your brother no matter what those shit Septons might say.
    • There's also his reunion with his niece Shireen, who he warmly embraces.
Robert: "Now here is a face I remember! Shireen, by the gods has the North been good to you, girl! I remember when you left you were a scrawny little timid thing. Now look at you. Pure strength. Stannis will be pleased when he sees you again, girl."
    • His greeting towards Joy is warming, saying that she's a true source of pride amongst the lions. Doubly so, given his feelings towards the Lannisters.
  • Chapter 35: After Dany saves a girl from Mago from being his spoil, the girl overwhelmed and grateful to Dany, who calmed her down.
    • Dany telling Irri and Doreah that the girls are brought under her protection.
  • Khal Drogo fighting Mago in a duel to the death because the latter insulted his wife Daenerys.
Drogo: "I was willing to overlook your words…but naming my wife, my Khaleesi, the moon of my life and mother of my son a whore…that is something I will not tolerate."
  • Sansa refusing to pass judgement on Sandor for his scars after Joffrey's jeering.
Joffrey: "What's the matter, Lady Stark? Too much ugliness for you to handle?"
Sansa: "No, your grace. Scars are not ugly and should not be held against those who have them."
    • Ned coming to his daughter's side after she heals Sandor's scars, Sansa reassuring her father that she's alright, refuses to show any weakness of their House to anyone else. Ned, more than slightly proud of her, withdraws his aid.
    • A confused Sandor checks his scars or more accurately, where the scars on his face used to be. After checking his reflection, a speechless Sandor gets on one knee, lowers his head and thanks Sansa for taking away the scars that'd haunted him for nearly his entire life.
  • Garlen reunites with Karsi and her two daughters, as well as meets his son, Garion for the first time.
    • Helga and Ansa, Karsi's daughters consider Garlen to be a father to them, calling him Papa Garlen.
    • Karsi named her son Garion after his father.
Garlen: "Garion. That's…that's a good name. A strong name for a strong lad."
Karsi: "He takes after his father in that regard…which is why I gave him his name."
    • After Garion calls him "Daddy" Garlen decides then and there to drop all of his family's ambitions and stay with his new family.
Garlen: And with that one word, Garlen's world as he knew it ended. Forget his family's politics. Forget those simpering 'Ladies' that were trying desperately for his attention. None of them meant anything to him anymore. The only thing that mattered was Karsi, her daughters, and their son in her arms. "That's right, Garion," Garlen smiled, holding out his hands, to which Garion immediately pushed himself into allowing Garlen to hold him for the first time. "I'm your father, lad…and I'm not going anywhere."
