• Luke noticing his son Bobby being nervous and saddened about him leaving for Mars and telling him how he's figured out a way to continue reading Treasure Island together even while he's absent, which cheers up the child.

  Woody: (defensively) You guys just aren't manly enough to wear jewelry.
  • Gets a nice Call-Back when Terri gives it to Jim near the end of the movie.
    Terri: I wish Woody were here to see you.
    Jim: He is here, Terri.
• Maggie's speech at her and Jim's party.
  Maggie: In every human culture, Mars has always held a special attraction. I mean, what if that means something? The universe is not chaos. It's connection. Life reaches out for life. That's what we were born for, isn't it? To stand on a new world and look beyond it to the next one. It's who we are.
• Woody sacrificing himself for Terri is heartwarming and tearjerking at the same time.
• The fact that Phil refused a direct order from Jim and stayed behind as a massive dust storm made launch conditions worse and worse, just to try and buy more time to get his friends off of Mars.
