"When we're together, all we have to be is Jules and Cal."

"It is impossible to be immune to the insanity of first love. A union predestined, written in the stars. That's the only way I can wrap my head around it. But every tear, every skipped heartbeat, the passion, the pain, it's all worth it in the end."
Juliette (voiceover), First Love

What's that? A show that heavily employs familial themes and centers around a romantic pair having moments that tug on the heartstrings? Preposterous!

Spoilers will be unmarked!!

  • Juliette and Ben jamming to "Before He Cheats" is adorable to watch.
  • While talking to Cal, Juliette spots a bee on her shoulder. Her reaction is to gently scoop it up and let it fly away. She even tries to make a small wishing game out of it. This is a clear indication of Juliette's character: literally wouldn't even hurt a fly.
  • Ben ships the hell out of Jules and Calliope. He encourages Jules to talk to her, he signals Jules to invite her to Noah's party, he alerts her that Cal has arrived, he rigs a game of Spin the Bottle so the girls can have Seven Minutes in Heaven, and even asks how it went the following day.
  • Cal and Juliette's Seven Minutes in Heaven, especially if you have a keen enough eye to notice Cal has her hand on the stake behind her back before she decides to release it and fully indulge in Juliette.
  • Sebastian's conversation with Juliette. They reminisce on her younger years and he encourages her kinder nature.
Sebastian: Compassion is not a weakness. It is a gift to be embraced.
  • Calliope avoids selling Juliette out to her mother, even though Talia figures out Juliette is a vampire anyway.
  • Despite Cal chased her atop the school's roof and attacked her amidst her demands to be left alone to cry (in addition to having stabbed her in the heart with a stake the night before), Juliette lies to keep her out of trouble, telling the principal that Cal had followed her to offer emotional support.
    • Cal is taken aback that Juliette would protect her even after two attacks. She bares herself before Juliette by telling her that she did actually like her before finding out she was a vampire and that she doesn't enjoy being her enemy. Juliette responds that even though she was already onto Cal's game, she still had feelings for her since first sight, and all that mattered to her that night was getting to kiss her. If you look closely, Cal is intrigued by this.
    • Cal says that she would've followed through with stabbing her even if she hadn't bitten her, but Juliette reads her heartbeat and quickly figures out that she's lying about that.
  • During their first Shared Dream, Cal admits that even though she knows she shouldn't feel anything for Juliette, she's not like any other supernatural creature.
  • Cal feels close enough to Tess to confide in her about seconds thoughts regarding the Fairmonts. Turns into a Tear Jerker when Tess rats her out to the other hunters in the house.
  • Cal being equal parts worried about her family and friends as well as Juliette. The first chance she gets, she heads out to warn Juliette.
  • When Juliette confesses to her mother that she wants nothing to do with the ceremony, Margot comforts her by admitting she broke legacy taboo by running away with a human, Sebastian. She's also willing to call off the debut since Juliette doesn't want it. This is the first time we see Margot let down her walls.
  • Oliver stopping Elinor from goading Juliette into killing Calliope.
  • When Cal regains consciousness, her first instinct is to tell Juliette (and Elinor and Oliver by extension) to get to safety.
  • Juliette finds Cal being attacked by Cook and jumps in to save her without a second thought.
  • Juliette committing her first kill, not to keep herself sane, but to defend Calliope and Ben.
    • Ben proves to be the kind of best friend who will literally help you dispose of a body, even after he's just gotten through watching you kill a guy and drink his blood.
    • While Cal is understandably put off by the sight of Juliette murdering Cook and drinking his blood, she also takes it as a sign of how far Juliette is willing to go to protect the ones she loves.
  • Given what we see of her later, it's pretty nice to see Elinor showing concern for her father.
  • Margot doing all she can to keep her dying husband alive.
Margot: You promised me at least a thousand years!
  • When Cal lies about her and Juliette being out with Ben to console him over Ashley's death, Phillipa immediately gives him a hug. She then throws a bonfire in Ashley's honor right there.
  • When Cal realizes she and Juliette have a psychic connection and begins to doubt her feelings, Jules reminds her that she abandoned her family to a massacre attempt to ensure Cal's safety specifically because she has no doubts about her own feelings. Cal's response is to kiss Jules, leading to another love scene.
  • Cal and Juliette seek refuge from their families at the school and spend some time getting to know each other.
Juliette: It's like when we're together, I just do what I feel like doing.
Cal: ... Instead of what you're expected to do.
  • The girls standing up to their mothers for each other over the phone.
  • Juliette warding Cal off to keep her safe from Oliver and Cal initially refusing to leave her.
  • Cal returning a ring Juliette dropped. Right after Talia forbade her to speak to or even look at her.
  • The entire scene in Juliette's bedroom, even though it turns out to be another Shared Dream.
    • In fact, that shared dream makes it even better, as it's a clear indication that the severing ritual Cal's family performed on her didn't work.
    • The scene starts out with Cal throwing a pebble at Juliette's window. Sound familiar?
  • It's sweet to watch Elinor take Juliette out and enjoy a night at a club, though it's ruined when they accidentally kill someone later.
  • Juliette and Ben spooning with each other in his bed is just downright precious, as she takes some time to comfort him while he grieves the loss of Noah.
  • Both scenes in Cal's bedroom, the second one ending with Juliette sleeping over and Cal assuring her that they can handle whatever their families throw at them.
Juliette: How are we ever going to just... be? Y'know, if we really only have a little time left... I don't wanna sneak around, always worried about our families killing each other.
Cal: We've faced everyone. Monster and human have tried to come between us. We got this.
  • Cal consoling Theo over the haunting memories of his birth mother's homicide.
  • When Jack and Talia find out about Cook attacking Cal, Jack says, "If he wasn't dead, I'd kill the son of a bitch myself."
    • Out of gratitude for saving Cal, Talia agrees to help Juliette remain under the radar. This is especially nice when you consider that, between herself and Jack, she's been shown to be the most hostile towards Juliette and her family up to this point.
    • She also tries to warn the girls that the Hunter's Guild has arrived, though they've already fled.
  • Juliette is prepared to turn herself in to M.A.A.M. for Cook's murder, but Cal stops her. Later, Margot tries to make Cal leave despite knowing the danger she'd be putting her in, and Juliette stands against it.
  • When Ben confides that he doesn't feel safe enough around his mother to continue living with her, Juliette immediately considers he could stay with her and her family.
  • Juliette opts to clean up the bloodbath at the Wooden Stake Bar so Apollo and Cal can go home and deal with the loss of their brother.
  • Oliver and Carmen comfort Juliette in the wake of her fallout with Elinor.
    • Notice that she is the one who brings up Elinor's murder locker. He doesn't even try to use Juliette's sadness to his advantage, he's just trying to be there for her. As we learn later, he knows all too well how much it sucks to have a sister turn against him and ruin everything.
  • Margot reassures Sebastian that she loves their children in spite of her odd ways of showing it.
  • Talia and Theo's relationship. She's not his birth mother, but she is as fiercely protective of him as she is of his half-siblings. When he's turned into a vampire in the season finale and she takes him to Oliver so that he can be safe, she hugs him and tells him repeatedly that he will always be her son.
