The Naegis
In General
- The moments that show that Makoto and Kyoko can be Sickeningly Sweethearts. This is best exemplified in Chapter One of "Naegiri Week 2020". When Hana points out how sweet a baby Kiki is, both Makoto and Kyoko say that Kiki inherited it from the other. This leads to an "argument" over who's sweeter.Makoto: Yeah, she’s the sweetest, aren’t you Kiki? You’re sweet just like your Mama!Kyoko: (thinking) M…Me? He really thinks I’m s…sweet?! Alright, I guess I can admit that I’m s…sweet sometimes. And well…there are worse traits that Kiki could inherit from us. (out-loud) Perhaps, but I’d say she gets her sweetness from her Papa too!Makoto: M…me?! N…no…you’re the sweet one, Kyoko! I was a lonely dork until you came into my life!Kyoko: You’re selling yourself far too short, Makoto. It was your sweetness that helped me to break out of my shell and make friends…not to mention fall in love with you.Makoto: N…no…I’m not sweet, really! You’re the sweet one in this family!Kyoko: You’re being ridiculous! You’re sweet, not me! Kiki gets it from you as well as me!Makoto: No, she just gets it from you!Kyoko: No, you!Makoto: No, you!
Makoto
- "A Momoharu Weekend!" has him and Kyoko meeting with a minister who constantly dismisses Kyoko due to his views on a woman's responsibilities. While the two were willing to suck it up in order to get funding for Hope's Peak, he eventually hits his breaking point.Makoto: That’s it!Minister Hagiuda: Head…Headmaster Naegi…what’s the matter, boy? Did I…Makoto: Minister Koichi Hagiuda, ever since we’ve arrived at your home, you’ve treated Kyoko with unimaginable disrespect. For one, this is the first time you’ve referred to her as Mrs. Naegi; every other time, you’ve simply referred to her as my wife, like she’s not even here. Furthermore, you’ve deliberately excluded her from all policy discussions since yesterday, having Kazuko drag her along to do menial household chores with her. She’s the Vice-Headmistress of Hope’s Peak Academy, and deserves as much of a voice in these negotiations as I do.Minister Hagiuda: I thou…thought that was just a figurehead position you created so that you two could spend your days together at work.Makoto: Are…you…kidding? The only reason I’ve succeeded at running this school is because Kyoko was there to guide me and show me the ropes. She could easily run the school without me if she wanted to. She’s the reason I’m still alive, why we have a world to live in today, and I won’t tolerate you dismissing her as some 1950’s American housewife!
- The reason he was able to do this? He know that Kiki wouldn't be able to look him in the eyes again for not standing up for her. He even admits that, while he wouldn't actually do it, he considered getting a divorce solely so that Kyoko's referred to by name rather than just be "Makoto's wife".
Kyoko
- Her and Maki's friendship
- Initially, Kyoko was weary of Maki and of hiring her as Kiki's babysitter due to her standoffish personality, her similarities to Mukuro (someone she gotten along with before her betrayal), and her assassin background. After Kaito arrives and gets into one of his coughing fits and the two help him to the hospital, the two girls talk and Maki explains her and Kaito's relationship. This causes Kyoko to sympathize her, noting the similarities between the two's relationship with her and Makoto's, and decide to hire her as Kiki's babysitter.
- In "Kaito’s Spring Princess!", Maki begins going into labor with her and Kaito's child, with Kyoko there with her due to her being the closest thing to family that Maki has. When Maki begs for Kaito to be there, despite knowing he's dead, Kyoko says that she's there for her.
Maki: Th…thank you, Kyoko. You’re…the best friend…I ever had…
Kiki
- When she and Maki come across an unconscious Moshin Maizono in "The Surviving Maizono!", her immediate response is to take him home to give him food and shelter, saying that her parents always taught her how important it is to help others. As Maki and Kyoko note, this definitely makes her Makoto's daughter.
