Heartwarming / Birds of Prey (2020)

Go To

  • Dinah seeing Cassandra sitting on the steps of the apartment waiting for her foster parents to stop arguing. She offers her some comfort by saying it gets better and to not listen to whatever shit her foster parents are yelling. Before leaving, she even gives her money so she can buy breakfast. Dinah spends the rest of the movie looking out for Cassandra in her own way.
  • While very far from the best of role models, Harley takes Cassandra under her care after the kid runs to her trying to escape Black Masks' goons.
    • When Cassandra sees Harley's apartment, she's awed by it.
    • The end of the movie has Cassandra run away with Harley. She even gives Harley a sandwich — one that was similar to the one Harley lost during her chase against Renee — to cement their bond.
  • The Mafia enforcer who finds a young Helena among the bodies of her family still alive, and decides to keep her survival a secret and brings her to Sicily to hide with his family who take her in and train her to take revenge.
  • Harley genuinely seems to enjoy the other women's company, even equating them getting ready to fight Black Masks' gang as a sleep-over.
Harley: (gasps) Maybe we can order a pizza? Make cosmos?
    Dinah: Harley, focus.
    • After failing to get her moniker out into the mainstream, the other ladies tell Huntress that her name is pretty cool. For Huntress's part, she endearingly tells Black Canary it was cool how she kicked ass in tight pants.
  • When Black Mask and his goons arrive, Cassandra is worried that they're all out for her. Harley immediately states that it's not her they're after, but all five girls and states that they have to team up not only to avoid death, but to make sure Cassandra isn't tortured/killed for swallowing the diamond.
  • During the Amusement Mile fight, all of the women constantly check up on Cassandra, with Harley even yelling, "Who has the girl?" When they find her in danger, they quickly dispatch of the men grabbing her.
    • Helena pulling Cassandra aside, admitting she shouldn't be seeing something like this and gifts her her little brother's purple toy car. She tells her to close her eyes, hold onto the toy and not think of anything else — this is especially poignant because not only is this the same toy she was holding when her family was killed, but Helena knows first-hand how traumatic it is to watch people die in front of you at such a young age.
  • Harley finding a moment in the middle of the Amusement Mile fight to give a hair tie to Dinah, to keep her long hair out of her face during the fight. Wonder Woman might be able to kick ass with loose hair, the rest of us action ladies need a little bit of help keeping the flow under control.
  • Once Dinah unleashes her Canary Cry for the first time, Harley has this to say.
  • Harley may have mocked the Birds of Prey for being goodie-goodies, but she comments she left them behind because she knew they were going to be all right.
  • Harley has a recurring trend of being very nice to people in situations where she could realistically be an asshole; her genuine affection for Sal and his sandwiches, kindly thanking the man who lets her through his apartment when she's running from Renee, and how much she trusts Doc to the point of not even retaliating when he betrays her.
  • Dinah saves Harley from some ill-intentioned goons after a night of drinking. She doesn't particularly like Harley, but she's the only person who doesn't try to hurt or take advantage of her when she finds out about the break-up.
  • Near the end there's a bit where Harley tells Cassandra she "Helped make her a less terrible person" While this many seem like damning with faint praise, it does indicate she's realized she's a villain, which is actually a pretty big revelation for her, and hints at a possible Heel–Face Turn at some point.
  • Near the start of the movie, she gets herself a breakfast sandwich that's ruined by her being a massive target without her taking a single bite. At the end of the film, now she's on the way to becoming an Anti-Hero, it might not be the exact same sandwich, but she's going to enjoy it...
    • Cassandra seems to be in much higher spirits as Harley's apprentice, wearing cuter clothing in sharp contrast to her frumpy hat and hoodie. Comparing her to the sad kid sitting on the steps while her foster parents are arguing can lead one to believe that Harley is actually an upgrade.
