• Despite how expensive it is, Mixtli's father buys him a snow cone on his name day. ^note Runners have to carry the snow down a mountain each night for the shopkeepers hence the high price.
• When the other boys think Mixtli is impotent because he's unable to sleep with a prostitute, Chimáli tries to comfort him by saying that she didn't do anything for him either.
• When he and Tlatli are about to leave for the calmecac in Tenochtítlan, Chimáli gives Mixtli his old paints, reeds and brushes so that Mixtli can continue to practice his writing.
• Cozcatl's Undying Loyalty to Mixtli. Despite being castrated by Chimáli after he mistakes Cozcatl for Mixtli's homosexual plaything, he never blames Mixtli, and serves him with love and devotion for many years, including offering himself as a sexual partner when they first are on a trading journey through the jungles. Even when his relationship with Ticklish ultimately sours when she turns to another man to give her the child she couldn't get from Cozcatl, he tells Mixtli that he would never have minded if the child had at least been Mixtli's.
• When Mixtli joins the army and sees his old teacher, Blood Glutton, he is so happy that he throws his arm around him. Doubles as Funny because of Blood Glutton's reaction.
• Mixtli giving Cozcatl his freedom and making him his partner in his trading ventures.
• The friendship that develops between Mixtli, Cozcatl and Blood Glutton over the course of their journeys together.
• Mixtli saving Gíe Bele and her daughters from having to resort to prostitution by freeing them from indentured servitude and giving them back their inn. Doubles as a Crowning Moment of Awesome as he does this almost completely by wit alone.
• Mixtli refusing to refer to the Tapir-Woman as it like the cocoa-bean man does.
• After Mixtli sets out on one of his wanderings, Cozcatl and Blood Glutton sets after him out of concern.
• Mixtli and Zyanya's love for each other. It's best expressed with their words:

  Mixtli: For me, you are a treasure greater than I could ever have hoped to find. For you, I am not.

  Zyanya: I think I have loved you ever since… but we will not speak of yesterdays. I say only that I love you today and I will love you tomorrow. Because the yesterdays are gone. Todays and tomorrows are all the days that ever can be. And on every one of them I will say I love you."

• When Cozcatl asks for Mixtli's permission to buy free Ticklish so that the two can marry Mixtli refuses... because he wants to free her as his first wedding gift to them.
• When Mixtli learns that Zyanya is pregnant, his first reaction is to rush and fetch her a chair so that she can be carried home instead of having to walk. It doubles as Moment of Funny as Zyanya initially believes he's bailing out on her because he runs away without a word of explanation.
• The dedication in the beginning of the book: To Zyanya.
• When Beu Ribe finally reveals her feelings to Mixtli after decades of bitter fighting. He takes what's left of her hand and says "My dear, I love you too."
