So how exactly does the symbiote control work?
  • From what we know, when Venom takes over, it forms over Eddie. It's been shown to work that way, it's like a suit. That's thrown out with Carnage, who has a power to control where his mass is, creating holes in his torso to avoid bullets. It's not really a suit in his case. Not to mention, the times when Cletus separates from Carnage to talk, he's no longer a person as his face splits from Carnage. That begs the question, what happens to the host when the symbiote takes over? Does the host and symbiote switch forms? Or does Carnage's body morphing also morph the host's body as well? Or is Carnage just a special case?
    • They're likely adapting the powers Carnage has in the modern comics, which generally make no sense as new writers keep tinkering with the symbiote lore (breathing in space by recycling carbon dioxide? One example of how the comics have become loose with their canon). It doesn't make sense for him to work like the T-1000 or Clayface as human bodies can't do that, but it's whatever Marvel is doing now so the film was stuck with going with it.
    • When Carnage has completely enveloped Cletus' body, he rapidly liquefies Cletus' body into a complete liquid state. When Cletus returns, Carnage reassembles his body. They don't remain in the liquid state because it's too exhausting for Carnage to take that shape. They are able to do this because Cletus doesn't have any problems with deforming or destroying his body on a subconcious level. Eddie, on a subconcious level, would be horrified, and Venom knows this, so has never tried.
    • In the comics (Depending on the Writer), Carnage and Kletus are more fully bonded than any other symbiotes, to the point they're effectively the same being (except for a few times Carnage has decided to leave Kletus for whatever reason). The Carnage symbiote actually lives in Kletus' blood, letting him transform pretty much whenever he wants to long as he can bleed. With that level of symbiosis, Kletus essentially becomes as much a shapeshifter as Carnage. This was somewhat undermined in the film by portraying Carnage and Kletus as two separate entities (who don't even get along all that well), but does remain accurate, to a point, to what makes Carnage so dangerous in the comics.
    • All symbiotes can alter their hosts body, it's how Venom can fix the parts of Eddies body he nibbled on. Carnage just possesses a far greater version of this, just as how Riot had a stronger version of the symbiotes' natural shapeshifting to form it's weapons.

Venom not affected by music now?
  • It's been established that symbiotes are sensitive to very loud sounds so how was Venom not affected by the music at the rave party?
    • Raves are noisy, but not nearly as loud as a shuttle takeoff? You can go to a rave, stand for a couple hours, and the next day you might have a bit of a ring in your ears. If you're standing next to a church bell, you'll probably have to cover your ears and might go deaf in a matter of seconds.
    • The films are a little inconsistent on this point, but it's not just volume that affects symbiotes, but specific frequencies. In a "Symbiote Invasion" comic, Spider-Man and Scarlet Spider (this taking place during the whole "Clone Saga" kerfuffle) were trying to outrun a bunch of symbiotes and used a mall sound system to try and disable them. The pure volume didn't work, but once they swung a microphone near the speaker to create feedback, the symbiotes were no threat. Regular EDM might be too low-register to bother a symbiote, while a ringing bell might contain the frequencies that disrupt them.

So did Venom kill a bunch of people during his break up?
  • He jumps from one person to the other till they burn out, is he actually killing them or just jumping ship when they start to pass out from the strain but leaving them still alive? Considering he's still calling himself the "lethal protector" and wanting to be able to live openly alongside humans one has to assume he's grown to actually care about human life and it's not just Eddie holding him back so it would seem extra weird for him to both be so casual about murder and it never to come up again.
    • The official wiki page for the movie series' Venom symbiote doesn't confirm, so it's kinda ambiguous. There's two likely possibilities. Either, the process of bonding with and then leaving a host can be physically taxing and potentially harmful to the host's body, but it doesn't always result in death. They may experience exhaustion, weakness, or other adverse effects from the symbiote's possession, but whether they survive the experience likely depends on various factors, including the condition of their bodies and how naturally resistant they may be to the sapping factors of Venom's presence. On the other hand, Venom does say "another one bites the dust!". So the fact that Eddie is temporarily absent as a moderating influence may have made Venom less likely to restrain his bestial urges and in the end, killing his temporary hosts through his use of them. Also your assumption in your second sentence is likely correct, with the caveat that he's totally fine with killing and consuming actual bonafide villains. Furthermore, if we go with the "other hand possibility", perhaps he tried to target hosts who he observed doing certain types of misdeeds and thus didn't end up feeling overly guilty about it.

There was no reason for Venom to kill Cletus so why?
  • Venom ate the Carnage symbiote but there was no need to afterwards bite off Cletus' head, he was no longer a threat.
    • Venom had a very strong dislike towards Cletus, particularly for insulting Eddie. He killed Cletus not only because he was a sadistic serial killer even before bonding with Carnage, but also because the guy pissed him off that much.
    • Venom both likes and requires eating brains, something repeatedly stated throughout the films. This is even a major plot point of this movie in particular, as it precipitates the breakup between Eddie and Venom. For further relevance, in the climax Eddie promises that Venom can eat the enemies's brains in order to convince the symbiote to fight instead of run. It would be wildly inappropriate for Venom to NOT devour Cletus's head.

     How did Carnage know Mulligan?
  • Carnage kidnaps Mulligan because Shriek requested that he be there, except that all Shriek said was "the cop that took [her] eye" with no mention of Mulligan's name or appearance. So how did Carnage know Mulligan was the right cop? Did he just kidnap the first cop he saw and ended up getting lucky with his guessing?
    • Cletus may have just kept tabs on the guy in the hope of revenge one day.
