Headscratchers / Ted 2

Go To

How long has Ted been sentient? At least since John was a child, right? How is his battery not long dead when in the trial Shep Wild asks Ted to press his chest?

  • 30 years is a long time for a battery to hold, but not implausible when you think about the fact that Ted has his own voice and wouldn't need to have his chest pressed to 'talk' - in both the movies combined, we only see the button pressed three times since John's childhood. But even without usage battery's that old likely have gone bad and started to leak.
  • Or his batteries were replaced regularly.

During the court case concerning Ted's rights (and Hasbro's attempted seizure), the protagonists overlooked one critical detail which they absolutely should have put to the Hasbro representative in front of the court- as the film itself reminds us, Hasbro owns the Transformers franchise; this would include Optimus Prime, whose catchphrase is "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings". Since Ted is sentient by any standard, this torpedoes Hasbro's case stone dead.

The thing that got Ted's first court case dropped, that you can press on his chest and hear him talk, therefore meaning that he is a robot that is not sentient, falls completely apart when you think about it. First off, they could just point out how many vulgar things ted says and how he does things that no company would program into their toy (having sex, drinking, taking drugs, attacking people). He also can move around and talk, wich should be impossible due to only being filled with stuffing and having no actual bones, so they could have also thrown out that point just by default. Also, the Ted toy is only programmed to say two or three things, and Ted is clearly shown to be able to do that. so unless the judge and jury were just so apathetic that they just took this as a valid point in order to not deal with it (while Ted's case has some similarities to Dred Scott's case, he is the only talking stuffed animal in existence, so his case isn't quite as world-changing). Than again, if they just ended the movie then and there, there wouldn't be much of a movie in the first place.

  • How did Donny know where Ted was in New York?
