In the film, the M.E. gives Graham and Smith some information on the semen of the man who had sex with Cheryl. Since DNA analysis and testing was still in its infancy in the early 90s, she doesn't use terms easily identifiable. Long story short, she says the evidence points to a Japanese perpetrator. Actually, the evidence shows that the victim had sex with a Japanese male; it does not conclusively prove that her sex partner was also her killer. This half-measure style of investigation becomes Harsher in Hindsight when you recall the O.J. Simpson case in 1995.
