Headscratchers / Renfield (2023)

  • So, how well-known is Dracula In-Universe? Everybody knows him by name but nobody seems to express any surprise that he's real (except for maybe Rebecca at first), so does this mean he's famous as an actual vampire that really exists instead of as a literary character? The fact that nobody recognizes the name "Renfield" might suggest that there are no Dracula stories that involve him in this world, or possibly everyone thinks the name's just a coincidence? Or maybe most of them just know Dracula from Pop-Cultural Osmosis and haven't actually read any of the books or seen the movies enough to know who Renfield is? (Especially given the implication that this is the universe of the 1931 film)
    • Renfield mentions that there's a lot of lore about vampires. Presumably, it's "real world but Dracula myths are based on true events". And since Renfield isn't nearly as well known as Dracula, yes most people presumably have either never heard of him or just assume the name is a coincidence, especially since Renfield isn't living in England or central Romania, where the stories of Dracula are typically set.
    • Maybe they know Dracula by the books? The same thing that books like Dacre Stoker's ones, where Bram Stoker is a real person, and Dracula is real.
    • Or, if this is the same universe of Universal Horror (which is implied), maybe they know Dracula by the stories after his supposed death and resurrections. In Dracula's Daughter Van Helsing had witnesses that proof the existence of vampires. For no mention the survivors of his attacks. And he (or a relative in the "House of..." movies) were active in the 40's. In House of Dracula Dr. Edelmann know about Dracula himself and the many lives he took away as "Baron Latos" (actually Dracula) reveals his identity.
