Awesome / Renfield (2023)

Go To

When you have Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his super-powered familiar, it's hard to avoid awesomeness.

  • In the very beginning, recreating scenes from Dracula (1931) with Cage and Hoult, including digitally inserting the actor's faces into actual footage, to tie this film to the great legacy of Dracula films. The effects are seamless, the performances stellar.
  • The vampire hunters put up a good show against Dracula, actually getting him caged and helpless. If it wasn't for Renfield, they'd have ended the Count then and there.
    • While it's sadly a sign of him being stuck in an abusive relationship, Renfield destroying the binding circle with just his slipper is a badass move.
    • Dracula uses his power in creative ways, killing a priest by entering his mouth in mist form then exploding him into Ludicrous Gibs.
  • Renfield is attending a support group for victims of abusive relationships, specifically so he can seek out the abusers and feed them to Dracula.
  • Rebecca tracks Renfield (without specifically knowing of his involvement) to the restaurant he hangs out in, the Lobos track her to kill her for getting too close. When Ted has her at gunpoint, she dares him to shoot her, flatly refusing to be bought or bullied into becoming a Dirty Cop, something that impresses even Ted. Renfield manages to get his hands on a fly to activate his powers, and the two take out most of the Lobo mooks in an incredible action scene.
  • Renfield and Rebecca tearing through the Lobo family's soldiers and corrupt cops when they attack the apartment. Standouts include Renfield leaping off a dead body to a higher catwalk to reach a gunman armed with twin submachine guns (prompting a Lobo watching the cameras to cry "that freak can fly?!"), then tearing the man's arms off and using them to beat down more mooks before hurling them like javelins to impale two mooks beating on Rebecca! And Rebecca herself is no slouch, racking up almost as many kills as Renfield, and she just has her police service pistol, not eldritch vampire familiar powers.
  • The final showdown with the combined forces of the Lobos and Dracula is amazing. Dracula has turned the remaining Lobo soldiers into familiars, with all of Renfield's powers... but Renfield has a lot more experience using them, giving him the edge. Until the soldiers really start ganging up on him. Rebecca plays classic fire support, distracting, disorienting, and injuring Lobo familiars to assist Renfield.
    • At one point, Ted has Rebecca cornered, taunting her. She looks at her gun, says "Shit. I'm out," and tosses the magazine away. Ted grins... then Rebecca comes out of cover with a shotgun, shooting him square in the chest. It didn't keep him down for long, but she effortlessly got the drop on him.
    • Even outnumbered and taking serious injuries, Renfield obliterates all the Lobo familiars, leading to his showdown with Ted. The two are evenly matched... until Renfield gets his hands on another bug, at which point he kicks Ted so hard his bones shatter, his organs liquefy, and he vomits and shits out ridiculous amounts of blood. This implies that Renfield was fighting a powered-up familiar without his own powers active and still holding his own.
    • Bellafrancesca lures Rebecca into her office, closes the armored shutters to block the sun, and brings in Dracula. After proving that she has zero chance to kill him, Dracula brings in Rebecca's sister, beaten half to death, and promises that if Rebecca will join him, Dracula will use his blood to heal her. Renfield arrives and pleads with Rebecca not to give in, but she does. Except it's a con to reach the remote controlling the shutters, which she opens (after a few false starts) to bathe Dracula in sunlight. He flees, but her cleverness still hurt him significantly.
    • Dracula is hovering over the battered and possibly dying Renfield with Rebecca in his grasp. Rebecca shoots his foot and Dracula mocks the seemingly useless gesture. Rebecca's response? "Your foot still bleeds." Renfield, revitalized, pops up and begins going to town on his former Master.
    • Renfield beating up Dracula while reciting his affirmations from the support group.
