Headscratchers / Dave

  • Why didn't Dave's handlers reassign the secretary? For all they knew, the secretary would have expected the tryst to continue, which would have blew the lid on the scandal pretty early, if Dave was taken aback by it.
    • They figured they wouldn't have to. She doesn't seem to think anything happened to Mitchell except a blackout, so she's not in on the whole conspiracy, plus she can't exactly reveal she's been having an affair with the President. And she probably took Dave's confused, terse answers for "I'm okay, but we're through," so there's no worried about her wanting to pursue the relationship.
  • How did the actual president get into the ambulance?
    • The real Mitchell was either in the ambulance already or loaded onto a stretcher and ready to be rushed past the public into the vehicle. All they had to do was get a paramedic uniform ready for Dave so no one would notice him among the emergency crew.

  • At the end of the movie, the recently-widowed First Lady starts up a romantic relationship with Dave, a man who looks a lot like her deceased husband, and can't account for his whereabouts over the past few months. You think that might make people a teeny bit suspicious?
    • Eh, people will assume she's also an impersonator.
    • They might also assume it's something to do with her grief over the death of her 'beloved' husband; a bit unusual, perhaps, but not outside the realm of possibility.
    • As for Dave's absence, presumably the government officials involved — precisely to avoid any awkward questions concerning the 'Dave' side of the matter — produced some kind of cover story that would account for his absence (a sick relative needed to go out of town to care for, a much-needed vacation, etc.).
