- The fact checkers, or rather Jan and the other editor's reaction to them. Surely by 1973 Rolling Stone had been around enough to know when they were being stonewalled?
- The staff was already shocked at how young William was, and he had already lied to them about being a married journalism major. Considering that his very identity was a lie, they probably assumed he was just a kid looking to scam a free ride with a famous band so he could get laid and party. The band themselves claiming that William was lying didn't help the assumption that he had scammed Rolling Stone.
