Funny / The Thing (1982)

As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.

  • As the Norwegians land their helicopter, one of them attempts to use a grenade on the dog, but the grenade flies out of his hand as he rears his arm to throw it. His buddy gains a brief Oh, Crap! face and books it out of there, while he tries digging in the snow for it. He's unable to find it in time and the ensuing detonation literally sends him flying and destroys their helicopter. Black Comedy at its finest.
  • Palmer's reaction to the Spider-Head.note
Palmer: ... you gotta be fucking kidding.
    • It gets even funnier when it's revealed that Palmer was already an alien when he said that. Which in turn makes many theorize that it wasn't part of the Thing's facade; Palmer-Thing was flabbergasted that a part of "himself" would try such an obvious escape.
    • Especially funny during the blood test, when you're watching the movie a second time and know Palmer is infected. Right before Mac tests him, Palmer is looking down with the funniest expression of complete resignation, as if he's thinking "Welp, I guess the jig's up now."
  • Upon hearing the plan to go check out the Norwegian Camp, Palmer, joint still in hand, offers to take them there. Garry dismisses this offer immediately.
  • While the rest of the team are trying to figure out why the Norwegians flew a helicopter to their base to start shooting and throwing grenades, Nauls rolls in on his skates.
Nauls: Maybe we at war with Norway.
  • The final part of the blood tests after Palmer-Thing and a mid-transformation Windows are incinerated.
    • Nauls is tested, and is proved to be human. The very next shot has him holding a flame thrower and helping MacReady (who has clearly learned his lesson about being prepared if the person he's testing turns out to be a Thing) to test Childs and Garry.
    • Childs and Garry are still tied to the couch. Childs has an utterly stoic expression all through the test, telling MacReady "Just do it," looking for all the world like he's prepared to Face Death with Dignity. Once the test comes back negative, he's unmistakably relieved... then starts panicking as he realizes he's tied up with the only other potential Thing in the room. Garry looks so exhausted from everything that just happened with Palmer that his face registers a kind of weak "oh, whatever."
Childs: Cut me loose! Cut me loose dammit, cut me loose!
    • Immediately after Childs demands to be cut loose, which is funny in of itself after Childs got a nice closeup of Palmer's transformation, it cuts to Garry alone on the couch while Nauls and Childs each have a flamethrower pointed straight at Garry's head, practically daring him to make a move. The abruptness of the cut makes it oddly hilarious.
    • MacReady is doing Garry's test with a smug face, like he's already figure the Garry!Thing out and is about to expose it... and when the test comes negative, MacReady's look changes to embarrassed. Garry is not amused.
Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot. But when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!
    • Garry's anger is even funnier when you realize that despite everything that happened, MacReady kept his promise to save Garry for last. He's basically annoyed he still had to wait his turn after the debacle with Palmer.
  • Clark's description of the otherwise horrifying Dog-Thing:
Clark: I don't know what's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is!
    • Which is then followed by:
Clark: Childs! Mac wants the flamethrower!
      Childs: Mac wants the What!?
  • Childs, on multiple occasions.
I don't believe any of this voodoo bullshit!
  • Mac continuously confusing Norway for Sweden, with Copper having to correct him each time.
  • When MacReady checks up on Blair, he already has a noose with which to hang himself. It's especially funny because no-one acknowledges it, despite it being in plain sight.
  • Just before MacReady dynamites the Blair-Thing:
    Thing: GGGWWWRRRAAAAAAAA!
    MacReady: Yeah, fuck you too!
  • MacReady pouring his booze into the computer's circuits after losing a round of chess against it. If you look at the screen and then listen to the move that the computer made, you'll realize the computer's move actually would have let MacReady win, but the computer claims the victory anyway. The computer really was cheating!
    MacReady: Cheating bitch.
  • When Blair is assimilating Garry, he looks around the corner as if thinking "Oooh, hope no one walks in on me."
  • The whole exchange between Nauls and an irritated Bennings.
Bennings: Nauls, would you turn that crap down? I'm trying to get some sleep! I was shot today!
Nauls: What? Oh, sure! (reaches over to turn the music down and dismissively pulls his hand back at the last second)
  • One from the commentary, during which Carpenter is describing the scene where Mac and Norris find the spaceship, and Carpenter gets distracted by Mac's hat.
John Carpenter: Now Charlie Hallahan is going to describe how long this saucer has been in the ice here, and that the backscatter effect has been uh...uh...melting it down. Great hat, Kurt.
Kurt Russell: That kinda commands the scene, doesn't it?
  • Garry turning up the static to wake up Windows and scare him.
  • Very much Black Humor, but the Palmer-thing staggers out, on fire, into the snow while burning alive and howling that disturbing, alien scream... and MacReady throws a stick of dynamite at it for good measure. The resulting explosion does a marvelous job of shutting it up. And watch MacReady as Palmer-Thing explodes. The blast from the dynamite pushes MacReady back into the wall. Cue Mac having a look on his face that almost says 'damn, that stuff really does the job.' Apparently the explosives really did slam Kurt Russell into a wall after proving more potent than the crew anticipated.
