Fanfic Recs / The Thing (1982)

Go To

Proof that the remaining 10% is worth being assimilated for here:

These are recommendations made by tropers for Fan Fics, all of which have been signed. After a few samples, you will be able to judge whether you might be interested in the 'fic, based on who recommended it. No-name recommendations will be zapped. Nobody would back up the rec. Discussion of the recommendation is welcome on the discussion page. As such discussion is important, do remember to add the discussion page to the watchlist, if need be.

Do warn when a fanfic may head into sexually explicit or non-canon territory. Some people just don't like it, and as we all know, Shipping is Serious Business.

Published Works

The Things by Peter Watts for Clarkesworld Magazine

  • Recommended by Jonn
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The Thing from the point of view of the Thing.
  • Comments: Creepy as the film itself, and it explains several questions about the infection. Non-linear though, so you may want to brush up on the film's synopsis.
    • Spectral Time: Great story, lame, contrived, needlessly-evil ending.
    • Pepinson: Sounded pretty righteous to me.

Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials by Wayne Barlowe has an entry on the Thing.

  • Recommended by JackG
  • Synopsis: A mock field guide including artist impressions, in this case the alien morphing from a husky into its natural form.

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Norwegian

  • Recommend by Melinda
  • Status:' Complete
  • Synopsis: A Fix Fic of sorts combing plot elements and characters from both movies. Here, before Garry can shoot Lars (in his pursuit of the sled dog) McReady knocks out the Norwegian with a bottle of scotch. They then listen to their prisoners story, at first skeptically, but then they find reasons to believe it (along with a certain American scientist in a nearby Sno-Cat) and with this new influx of knowledge, the fight gets a little more even.
  • Comments: The story does an impressive job of capturing the feel of most, if not all of the characters as the movies depicted them. There are some cunning plot twists and good Not His Sled moments. The Thing itself is still a terrifying and deadly threat in spite of this new advantage.

Unfinished Business (The Thing)

  • Recommended by JohnAlexanderHitchcock
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An optimistic continuation of both the Carpenter film and the prequel centered around the survivors teaming up with a Russian expedition team to destroy the Thing once and for all.

Who Goes There? by RisTigger

  • Recommended by mariic
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: What happens when a group of friends have an all night gaming session? Everyone's just there to have fun and roll some dice, but the GM has his own plans for how this game is going to end. Mac, a board gamer and odd man out, must try to keep the group together under extreme stress. What is the GM planning, and why doesn't anyone seem to know what this game is about? Who Goes There, the last game you will ever play.

Smoke Signals As a Cry For Help by gumsneaker

  • Recommended by CantodInverno
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: MacReady, Nauls, Childs and Fuchs survive the Thing and have to face what they went through, while traveling through America to break the news of their mates' death to their loved ones.
  • Tags: Post-Canon
  • Comments: this one-shot is centered around trauma, paranoia, grief and survivor's guilt in a respectful and true-to-life way, and it's an interesting exploration of what feelings the final survivors from horror movies would realistically go through.

Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

The Love of Broken Biomasses

  • Recommended by Peryton
  • Status: Complete
  • Pairings: Eywa/The Thing.
  • Synopsis: Eywa finds true love in the form of an assimilatory alien organism.
  • Tags: Crackfic, Darkfic (it's humorous in tone, but it contains quite a lot of Fridge Horror and potentially terrifying descriptions), Yuri, Mars Needs Women
