Funny / The Shadow of Kyoshi

Go To

  • Kyoshi faces Mok and his men in the tenement block, heavily outnumbered. She just asks if this is everyone—after all, she likes things tidy, so she'd prefer to fight them all at once rather than hunt them down through the building.
Kyoshi: If you need to call for the rest, I'd be happy to wait.
  • Kyoshi defeats Mok's men easily, at which point he reveals he does have one last man in reserve. Wai jumps out of hiding to ambush the enemy... and then sees that it's Kyoshi and immediately prostrates himself before her.
    Mok: Oh, come on!
  • When Kyoshi meets Rangi at the gate of the Fire Lord's Palace, Rangi is out of breath. Turns out every time she had seemingly 'teleported' in was just her running around out of sight, specifically to get into a cool pose by the time Kyoshi showed up.
  • She also kisses Kyoshi hard enough that the Avatar forgets where she is... and then goes back to being composed.
    • Further, Kyoshi speculates Jinpa (who was there) will put that into the history books.
  • When Kyoshi and Rangi are alone together, in Kyoshi's bedroom, for the first time in years, Rangi says they have time before the party and seductively whispers into Kyoshi's ear a suggestion for what they can do while they wait: Stance training.
"Do you have any idea how easy it was for me to pull you off-balance at the gate?!"
Kyoshi had forgotten that meeting with Rangi again meant meeting the cruelest person in the world: The Avatar's firebending sifu.
  • During the party Kyoshi is confronted by a corrupt Earth Kingdom governor who is angry that she cleared bands of daofei from his land and then gave it back to the farmers he bought it from for distressed prices saying that he owned contracts on said land. Kyoshi replies that, if he is such a stickler for contracts, he can compensate her for clearing the criminals from his land which she says would be the same as the supplies and payment of a medium sized army. Rangi has to actually hold in her laughter after seeing Kyoshi verbally own this guy.
  • At said party, Kyoshi blunders some amount of the social etiquette, such as mistaking the Fire Lord's illegitimate half brother for the genuine article. During a national crisis of leadership! The narration puts the audacity of the situation best:
The crowd had frozen. The waiters had frozen. The sun in the sky halted its arc. The celestial bodies had never seen such a colossal blunder in their thousand lifetimes of watching the Avatar.
  • Also the fact that said Fire Lord, despite his position, is intimidated by the sheer presence of Hei-Ran. Kyoshi and Rangi think this is hilarious... until Hei-Ran turns her attention to them.
Hei-Ran: And what are you laughing at, lieutenant?
  • Kyoshi and Jinpa take Hei-Ran and Rangi to a nearby island. Hei-Ran spends the entire time being a combination of micromanaging superior officer and nitpicking mother, criticizing Rangi for everything from her bison brushing to her supply choices to her landing site.
Kyoshi: How did you handle her on the trip to the North Pole?
    Rangi: She was comatose!
  • Jinpa is in the middle of assuring everyone that he can keep an eye on Atuat, when he realizes she has just exchanged all their money for gambling tokens. The others find them later, with Jinpa looking like he witnessed sacrilege and Atuat casually explaining that she lost everything but managed to eventually break even.
  • After hiking for an hour to reach a spiritual site so that he can guide her into communing with Kuruk, Nyahitha points out to Kyoshi a spot nearby where she could park a sky bison if she had one. Confused, she reveals that she has access to one, but assumed the walk was part of the spiritual exercise. Nyahitha’s angry reaction prompts her to irritably wonder if, between all the people she knows who covet them, the world would be happier if the Avatar just reincarnated as a sky bison.
  • The fiasco with Yun is Nightmare Fuel, and what follows after is mostly sad, but there is a funny bit. Rangi, in her anger over Kyoshi lying to her about Hei-Ran's plan to sacrifice herself, coldly calls her "Avatar Kyoshi" and says they are nothing to each other any more. It's a heart-wrenching moment... until Hei-Ran (who had been using a writing slate to communicate due to her injuries) bounces a spare bit of chalk off of Kyoshi's forehead to get her attention before casually pointing out that Rangi declares eternal hatred to her on a regular basis, and it usually takes about a week for her to show up with some sign she still cares. Rangi barely lasts ten minutes before she returns with a bowl of noodles for Kyoshi, which she obviously cooked using her own firebending.
Rangi: YOU HAVEN'T EATEN SINCE LAST AFTERNOON! [throws chopsticks down and storms back out]
Hei-Ran: [writing] See? Even faster than I thought.
  • When Kyoshi needs to swim to a submerged island, it takes her an embarrassing amount of time to remember that she's a waterbender. Worse, this is the second time it's happened—in the same location.
  • After Kyoshi nearly drowns, the sailors dive down and drag her back up. She points out that she gave them strict orders not to come after her under any circumstances. They just shrug and say that's a stupid order, so obviously they were never going to follow it. Kyoshi wryly notes that if more people had that sort of basic common sense, the Fire Nation wouldn't have almost been plunged into civil war over a bunch of honor customs.
  • Jinpa summons Kirima and Wong to help Kyoshi in her final fight against Yun, reminding them of their obligation to defend their sworn daofei sister... while also paying them a substantial amount to make sure they actually turn up.
    Kyoshi: A lot of money.
  • After the battle, Kyoshi saved Rangi's life with great difficulty. Kirima and Wong complain that she gave no attention to them, not even some pain medication. Kyoshi notes that Jinpa needed it more—then realizes that he's currently drugged out of his mind, so maybe she gave him too much.
  • When Kyoshi contacts Yangchen, which firstly is by accident as she apparently meant to talk to Kuruk, as a result leading into a very confused Yangchen agreeing to not share memories of her swimming, and the fact that of course she's no longer alive.
  • When Kyoshi finally decides to connect with Kuruk, she does so by diving into the ocean and threatening him, which arguably works.
Kuruk. Get out here now before I die, or I will cross over to the other side and come after you there.
  • Atuat is positively gleeful about going on an adventure as an official companion of the Avatar, and declares she's going to commission a commemorative painting of them together. Her excited shouting startles Yingyong into squashing Jinpa against the wall of the palace stables, causing one of the grain sacks he’s carrying to burst open. Yingyong happily starts munching on the contents, nearly knocking Atuat over with his tongue.
    • This happens in front of the Fire Lord.
Zoryu: I was going to give a great big speech about how the fate of my nation rests on the shoulders of this group!
    Kyoshi: We’ll, uh, be careful.
