• There is some Black Comedy snark every time El briefly addresses the history of dark wizards making mals of their own (at least until the third book reveals a very grim and regular case of this).
  [I]t always ends in roughly the same way, with variation only in the amounts of screaming and blood.
• Professional Butt-Kisser Ibrahim tags along on a dangerous scouting mission and ends up getting tangled up in some magical ropes that a villainous group is using to evacuate at high speed, being yanked away with them in an embarrassing (and slightly dangerous) manner.
• At one point in The Last Graduate, Orion chases a mal known as a shrieker into the girls' communal showers, which leads to "a lot of non-maleficaria shrieking" and Orion inadvertently solving the problem of having not bathed in the last few days.
• There is something oddly comical about a suspenseful encounter early in The Golden Enclaves when the maw mouth that has breached London is spotted. The unspeakable horror instantly goes from "Leisurely hollow out fortress pocket dimension while shrugging off everything Britain's premier wizards throw at it which it does not eat," to... okay it does not run as such and a good portion of its Too Many Mouths are screaming by default, but desperate fleeing for its mockery of a life is the only way to describe it. Once a few seconds pass for the reality of that to sink in for her, El gives chase. It is not supposed to go like that.
