  • Wayne has been teaching Max, Wax's son, accents. But he told him not to tell Wax, so that Wax would think his son was a genius.
  • Max interrupts a tense diplomatic stand-off to ask for the bathroom.
  • After a heartrending scene where MeLaan breaks up with Wayne because she's leaving Scadrial, she leaves him on a cheery note: He was the best lay she ever had. Yes, in seven hundred years, he was the best she ever had. Wayne has to take a minute to process that.
  • Two accountants have been hunting for Wayne; Marasi and the other constables assume that they're collection agents. Turns out that they're his accountants, who just want him to tell them what to do with his money, because he has so much of it. He gave most of his initial fortune (the reward from the Vanishers case) to Sofie Tarcsil, and became filthy rich as her first investor. Then he tried to use it to buy homes for the poor—his affordable housing project proved extremely profitable. Then his attempts at commodity investment, stock speculation, and everything else just kept making him more and more money. His current plan to get rid of his money (which he comes up with after stealing an accountant's hat and using their accent for a bit) is an extension of his "get everyone in the city drunk" idea. He invents the idea of large-scale, monetized sporting events, figuring playing the different octants against each will be a harmless outlet for the current frustrations. He's hoping this will finally bankrupt him. It will not.
  • A glimpse at a broadsheet reveals that Handerwym sued Allomancer Jak over royalties, and won. In an interview, Jak insists that this was his plan all along, to teach Handerwym how to write stories then cut him loose as a sink-or-swim test. It would be blatant ass-covering, but Jak is just so earnest that it really seems like he believes it.
Mister Terrisborn had no comment when questioned on the subject, simply putting his face in his hands and sighing.
  • When Wax and Wayne are confronted by Lord Gave Entrone, the mayor of Bilming, and a man Wax utterly hates because on their first encounter he openly insulted Steris to her face. Wax notes to himself that he will have to be careful not to offend him.
Wayne: Oi! Hey, Wax! Someone done sewn a sack of dicks together and made a person! It's even walking!
  • During a confrontation with Telsin, Wax realizes that she's only giving a Motive Rant because she's stalling him. He walks past her and, assuming he's listening and just being dramatic, she keeps talking. To the air, as Wax has actually jumped off the roof and left her wasting her own time instead.
  • Early in the book, Wayne has been complaining that one of the constables is actually a giraffe pretending to be human (he has a long neck). Much later, Steris reveals him to be TenSoon in disguise. "You walk strangely in a two-legged body." Reddi is just flabbergasted that this means Wayne was right.
  • Wayne mentions a time he burned down a school. "It was an evil rusting school." Wax is horrified; he can't remember that. Once Wayne tells him the name, Wax considers for a moment... then admits he's right.
  • Wayne's wealth has let him buy vast amounts of bendalloy to not worry about running out of it. Marasi thinks he finally learned better control and discipline. At the climax, where Wayne intends to burn all his bendalloy using a duralium push, he brings out 17 bags of Bendalloy. Harmony is himself confused.
  • What is Wayne's last question to Harmony, God Himself, before he departs to the Beyond? "Was that the biggest explosion a person ever made?" Harmony, a little bewildered, says that (if you discount the Ashmounts as Acts of God) yes, it was the biggest explosion a person ever made on the planet. Wayne crows that it's going to make Steris' brain melt.
    • His reasoning is funny too. Harmony is bewildered because Wayne chooses to ask this when face to face with God? Wayne answers that he figures when he moves Beyond he's going to get the answers to the important questions, so he might as well ask something silly.
    • Later on, Ranette notes that she can hardly be upset at Wayne's passing, since he did go out in the biggest explosion ever. "Hell, if you had to go, that was the way."
  • Wax initially assumes that Wayne didn't leave him anything in his will... but then he starts finding random trash in odd places. Like half a sandwich or a stuffed frog. The frog came with a note apologizing that it was supposed to be a live frog, but they couldn't bring themselves to do it.
Wax: I haven't the heart to confront them about it. Besides, I'm sure Wayne's little gifts will run out soon.
[Marasi and Steris stare at him]
Marasi: Did you know Wayne? When in his life did he ever let a joke die?
