  • The first meeting between Khita and Blacknail in 3.3, where he tries to intimidate her only for it to have the opposite effect.
Blacknail took a long step towards the girl that removed most the distance between them, and straightened up to look her directly in the eye. Then he swept his cloak back behind him and flipped his hood down dramatically to fully reveal his inhuman visage.

The girl’s eyes went wide and she took a step… forward? Blacknail froze in confusion and the grin slipped from his face as he took in Khita’s delighted smile.

“A hobgoblin! I can’t believe this gang has a hobgoblin in it. That’s the sharpest thing I’ve ever heard” she squealed in delight.

Blacknail took a step back away from her nervously. Her unusual lack of fear unnerved him. Saeter looked more than a little taken aback as well.

“What’s your name? How many people have you killed? Do you know any secret hobgoblin stuff?” she asked Blacknail excitedly as she took another step towards him.

Blacknail growled menacingly, but that failed to deter her approach. He threw Saeter a panicked look. He didn’t know how to get the female away from him without drawing a blade, and he had a feeling that would be frowned upon.

  • Khita insists she knows what she's doing as a scout in 4.1. Blacknail points out that she was followed by not only a Harpy, but Scamp.
  • Scamp leads Blacknail through the equivalent of a Scooby-doo chase in 4.2 before Red Dog asks what's going on. When the mage, whose crystals Scamp stole, explains that there's a chance the flawed crystals could go off, he decides he's just getting as much distance as he can and plugging his ears.
  • How does Blacknail lure a trader from his group to steal his clothes in 4.8? He leaves a pouch full of coins on the side of the road with a string tied to it. Dumb human indeed.
  • Blacknail spends a good minute working out how a lock works in 5.4. His reaction at figuring it out sells it.
He couldn’t help chuckling quietly to himself as he moved. He’d successfully defeated the clever human lock! Had there ever been a smarter hobgoblin than him? He doubted it.
  • Mahedium gives us this Hypocritical Humor gem in 5.8.
“He certainly wasn’t a cheery fellow. The master of this abode should really consider getting some friendlier staff. There’s something to be said for basic courtesy after all,” the mage muttered as he walked up the path to the house. “Why would anyone want such inhuman thugs around?”

Blacknail met Mahedium’s gaze. The mage blinked and stared at the hobgoblin for a second before sighing.

“Right, never mind,” he then muttered to himself.
  • Blacknail comes home late in 7.1, feeling both used and confused and not really sure about the way he spent time with Luphera last night and Saeter wanted to know where he'd been. Then we get this gem:
“There’s this woman…” he muttered a second later, as the truth burst out of him unexpectedly.

Saeter’s face went through several stages. First his eyes narrowed in confusion, then he frowned doubtfully, then his eyes widened with shock and worry, until finally his expression settled into a look that portrayed deep but sad wisdom. The old grey haired scout reached out and put a hand on Blacknail’s shoulder.

“There always is,” he sagely told the confused hobgoblin.

There was a weird twist to Saeter’s smile, and his eyes also seemed a little odd. Blacknail didn’t care though, he was just relieved his master wasn’t… overreacting. He grinned happily as he began unburdening himself. There was no way his wonderful and ever so wise master would make fun of him.
