Season One:

  • The existence of a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie in universe. Apparently there are some movie concepts not even Phil Lord & Chris Miller will touch.
    • A full clip from the film is finally shown in episode eight:
Xavier: (In a terrible Australian accent) Dr. Poacher injected those hippos with a serum that makes them hungry…
      Will Forte: How hungry?
      Xavier:…Hungry hungry…
    • And it was apparently successful enough to get a sequel…
    • As of Episode Six, we learn that Xavier was also in a film version of Yahtzee. How that film went is anyone’s guess.
    • Similarly, Xavier’s Daryl Hall & John Oates biopic Private Eyes which nails every cliche of rock and roll biopics out there. Particularly this moment.
Channing Tatum as Oates: This city… will put you in its mouth, bite you up, and spit you out… it’s an eater of men…
  • Indigo’s incredibly pretentious testimony sending up Le Film Artistique. She misinterprets Ned’s prank of stacking beer cans on Aniq as “a metaphor for society’s illusion of stability” and the acting is intentionally hammier and self-important than the rest of the series. Not to mention her refusal to look at television screens.
    • In episode eight, it is revealed that a moment during her testimony when it appeared that Xavier peed on one of the Jennifers was just him pouring his drink out on her. After Jennifer asks how is that any better, to which everyone pretty much says so much better, Indigo is quick to add “not in Europe.”
  • Aniq’s recollection of Brett and Xavier’s confrontation while drugged:
Xavier & Brett: (Slowly, simultaneously) We’re about to fight, aren’t we? (Shoving each other) Yeah. That’s what I said. Yellow giraffe. Yellow giraffe!
  • In episode two, Brett encounters Indigo at the reunion, who informs him that she is starting an online group dedicated to promoting cheese made from human breast milk, due to the barbarism of humans drinking other animal’s milk. Brett is eating cheese when this happens.
  • Chelsea ultimately admits to Xavier that she had planned to drug him and leak nudes of him online. Xavier comments that he had already done it.
    • Also when she admits the flask he was about to drink out of was filled with cat tranquilizers, he asks if that means he should take smaller sips. Eventually, Chelsea just takes the flask from him and tosses it over the balcony.
  • Chelsea angrily confronts Brett about their affair in a photo booth at the party. They both pause to take photos with the silly props as they bicker.
  • Aniq finds out that Brett's affair was with Chelsea while overhearing her story. He immediately texts this to Yasper who responds with shocked gifs.
  • During the "One Shot, Twice" musical number, Walt tries to sneak in his own verse before being cut off by Yasper.
Walt: And now it's time for my verse/ tonight for me is gonna be-
Yasper: (Cutting in front of Walt) If your first movie bombs/ make a better sequel!
  • Episode two ends on a cliffhanger revealing a hidden camera in the room where Xavier was pushed to his death. Come episode three, Yasper remembers the camera (having been the one to install it) and suggests informing the detectives… and Detective Culp ultimately erases the footage that could have exonerated Aniq by mistake. Oops.
  • Durring Chelsea's interrogation:
    Chelsea: You think I’m insane.
Danner: Not at all! I don't think you’re insane!
Cut to a shot of Danner’s notepad, with the word "Insane?" written.
  • As part of a distraction, Yasper leads the detectives into the guest house to investigate a silhouette in the window. It turns out to be an electronic standee of Xavier. Which Danner decapitates with a sword after a Cat Scare.
Yasper: (Panicked) You didn’t know what that was and you took its head clean off!
    Danner: (Sternly) Remember that.
  • When Aniq finally presents the death threat to Danner, she promptly identifies it as being written by Xavier as a rejected song.
Aniq: Thanks man. I got it.
  • The Wimp Fight that Aniq and Xavier got into at the St. Patrick's Day party.
Yasper: Are you dancing or fighting?
    • Apparently, the fight was completely improvised by the actors, with their only direction being to make it look like they had no idea what they were doing.
  • Xavier's reaction to Brett tossing his hat off the balcony:
Xavier: [genuinely furious] That was a bullshit overpriced hat that looks stupid, man!
  • The reveal of who was sending threatening texts to Chelsea… Jennifer 2. As part of a ploy to help Zoe. She mentions that she apparently learned how to do it from her son, who did it all the time at school… until he got suspended for reasons she isn’t clear on. Truly a level of parenting that would make Peter Griffin look like father of the year.
  • Zoe dramatizing her inner monologue as conversations between different aspects of her personality. Danner is understandably freaked out by this at first.
  • In a flashback to Danner's time as a beat cop, her old partner tells her about a time he got drunk at his cousin's wedding and fired his gun into a bunch of decorative pillows, leading to this exchange:
Danner: Are you sure you're not from Florida, man?
Kleyes: Arizona. It's like the Florida of the West.
  • Maggie’s testimony is an adorable romp with silly sound effects, the cast mugging and being dubbed over by her, the Jennifers playing patty cake, and Walt and Ned being portrayed as puppets for some reason.
  • Back in Aniq’s flashback, Walt ominously hinted that no one was gonna forget him after the reunion… because he was planning to streak through the after party. Of course, he emerged nude right as Xavier’s body was discovered so he quickly aborted that plan.
  • Once Aniq comes clean that he was listening in on everyone’s statements, Brett apologizes for comparing him to the love child of Steve Urkel and Carl Winslow. Aniq comments that he didn’t hear that partnote .
  • Walt makes a big deal over laying out what truly happened at the fateful St. Patrick's Day party...only to have everyone be too consumed over what happened to listen to him. Oh and they still don't get this was Walt's house rather than Brett's uncle.
  • Culp basically imitates all of the theory-hungry viewers after Aniq makes a vague realization of the closet door:
Culp (screaming): WHAT IS GOING ON?!
    • Another funny Culp moment from the finale is after he puts Yasper in the police cruiser and informs the captain that he quickly needs to grab something. Que the following scene of him hauling the memorabilia board (the same one Danner used to confirm that Xavier wrote the revenge lyrics) in a plastic sheet out of the house, taking it as "evidence".
  • While dissecting Yasper's motive, Danner casually helps herself to a few of the buffet items left out from the afterparty and comments on them throughout.
  • Yasper tries diverting attention away from his reveal as Xavier’s killer to another element of the mystery. Cue him using the distraction to try and run out the front door, while Danner and Culp chase after him.
    • Doubly funny is Brett shouting from the couch, “suspect is on foot,” like he’s a part of the force.
  • In the final scene Aniq and Zoe finally kiss, marking the start of a new relationship… and then Walt chimes in, apparently having ridden with them and being forgotten. Again.
Walt: So can you guys drop me off at my place?
  • The realization that this entire murder case really had its origins in Yasper breaking up the band in high school because he thought pop music was a passing fad and ska was going to be the biggest genre. Keep in mind, this was 2006.

Season Two:

  • Zeng and Vivian bluntly admitting they always hated Brett.
  • As Aniq recounts his version of events to Danner over the phone, he gets to the part where he thinks he saw Grace putting something suspicious in Edgar's drink. Suddenly he realises that her voice sounds louder over the phone. Turns out he recounted that part of the story as Danner walked into the house, right in front of Grace, Zoe, and their parents.
  • Danner and Aniq walk in on Zoe and Travis trying to pry open Edgar's eyes to unlock his phone. Aniq's reaction is what sells the moment.
Aniq: [Completely deadpan] What the fuck?
  • Travis's utterly insane theorizing, such as his belief that Aniq was signalling to him by simply switching tables.
    • His flashback is mostly a straightforward noir detective story, but there are a few moments that make one chuckle. Such as when he confronts Isabel at the reception, calling out Edgar to her, which results in Isabel slapping him. Again and again and again.
  • The "WTF" reactions of Danner and Aniq when Sebastian drops his suave British accent to reveal he's really from San Bernadino.
  • Danner's tale with Quentin making her a dinner...and burning it while trying to be sauve.
  • As Quinten talks of being a "pyromaniac for sex," Aniq interrupts to note there's a term for that, only for Danner to snap "shut up, this is my story."
  • Danner shares how the guy liked having his chest slapped with Danner getting into it. Cut to her slapping thin air to Aniq as he begs her to move off this. That's before she gets into the wild fun they had in the kitchen.
Aniq: And this is the short version, right?
  • Ulysses just happens to be carrying a risque photo of Vivian just in case someone doubted his story of them being together.
  • After several episodes acting like Aniq smashed Feng's truck to pieces with his car, Danner sees it barely caused a small dent.
Danner: You said it was wrecked!
Aniq: No, I said I was wrecked! Emotionally, it was devastating.
Feng: I'll never get over it.
  • In a beautiful payoff to a Brick Joke, Aniq learns that in the movie based on Season 1, "he" is being played by...Jaleel White. And then seeing him and Danner are a couple.

Meta

  • Xavier’s song "Imma Live Forever" for how hilariously prophetic and Harsher in Hindsight in universe the lyrics are.
    Oh-oh! I got some enemies/ I betcha wanna push me off a balcony…
    • The setting of the music video? Xavier disrupting a funeral. And to cap it off, the video ends with a memorial to Xavier, meaning it premiered after the events of the season. The song/video’s producers thought releasing a video of a man dancing around a funeral home boasting that he will never die AFTER HE DIED was in good taste.
    • In addition to the EP of Xavier’s music, the viral marketing includes a fake online store for merch of the fake singer. Said merch includes shirts from his canceled tour, movie posters, bumper stickers, body spray, cologne, bedsheets, watches, a breakfast cereal, and even a line of condoms.
  • A few days after the sixth episode dropped, the show's Twitter apparently leaked a screenshot of Zoe wearing the wig found near Xavier's body. The fan community instantly started revising their suspect lists until the finale dropped and Christopher Miller subsequently revealed it was all a misdirect to derail the show's devoted Reddit community.
  • Christopher Miller advertised the watch party for the season finale with promises of the killer’s identity, puppets, and an “Afterparty-after party”on a yacht seized from a Russian oligarch.
  • How was it revealed that the show was getting a second season? By Christopher Miller posting what, at first glance, is a stew recipe.
