Being a Denser and Wackier incarnation of an already pretty wacky series, it should come as no surprise that Wonder is filled with plenty of wonderfully hilarious moments.

    Pre-release and Promotional Material
Reveal trailer
  • During the trailer, after Mario touches a Wonder Flower, not only do the pipes start having eyes, but one of them starts crawling around like a worm.
  • A shot in the trailer has Mario and Peach use large plumber hats as parachutes. Peach's plumber hat is bright pink with a little crown icon! Bonus points for the fact that unlike Mario, who uses his own hat, Peach pulls her cap out of thin air.
  • The stinger of the trailer ends with Mario turning into an Elephant Mario. And no, this isn't a suit like the Tanooki Suit or Frog Suit, but rather it resembles an elephant dressing up as Mario. He stomps towards a sleeping Goomba while a flower remarks that the Goomba looks "so serene". Cue Elephant Mario knocking it into the sky with his trunk.
    Talking Flower: (calmly) Well then.

Wonder Direct

  • As seen in the game's intro, the Yoshis and Nabbit come to the Flower Kingdom's rescue. The last Yoshi (yellow) is eyeing Nabbit running behind them with suspicion, as if to say: "Why are you following us?".
  • Near the beginning of the trailer, it's shown that landing next to a sleeping Goomba will cause it to snap awake in panic.
  • Two Koopa Troopas that walk into each other will hip-bump together while turning around.
  • One talking flower, when approached, will wonder what Goombas taste like. The game Crosses the Line Twice by having a section of the level where your character turns into a Goomba, and has to brave the Maw-Maws trying to swallow him up. They are understandably, freaking out at being chased.
  • It's revealed that anyone can ride on a Yoshi this time around, including Yoshi himselfit wouldn't be the first time, granted, but it's still a bizarre image — and the characters in their giant Elephant forms, much to Yoshi's clear displeasure, who struggles to carry the immense weight of the forms.
  • In the Bubble Flower segment, enemies that are about to be hit by the bubbles are shown to panic just before they get destroyed by them.
  • As we all know from the reveal trailer, Mario may exclaim "Wowie zowie!" when picking up powerups. The Direct shows that the other characters might do this too — by having Daisy loudly and aggressively scream "WOWIE ZOWIE!" when picking up a reserve item Elephant Fruit.
  • One of the examples of the Wonder Flower at work is a side scroller that has Elephant Princess Peach floating through space, all while a Talking Flower goes "Wheeee!"

Promotional Shorts

  • Mario upon finding the Elephant Fruit traverses the level he's in as usual, but when he tries to jump through a vertical pipe, his bottom half is stuck outside due to his new size. The cherry on top is his futile attempt at escape by wiggling his legs.
  • Bowser tries to woo Peach with a flower, only for an Elephant Fruit to come by which Peach takes to turn into Elephant Peach. Bowser is utterly shocked at her new look and ditches the flower... changing it to a bouquet of flowers.
  • Elephant Mario tiptoes towards two sleeping Goombas in an attempt to poke a snot bubble. However the Goomba wakes up at the last seconds so Elephant Mario turns away. Then, he pops the bubble, causing the three of them to jump in the air, only for Elephant Mario to unleash a Ground Pound that sends the Goombas flying.
  • Mario rides on the worm-crawling pipe, which is outrun by Luigi (who's running), Yellow Toad (who's jogging), and two Goombas (who are just walking). Mario doesn't mind, as he decides to take a nap on the pipe.

    Gameplay
  • The second level of the game gives you a good idea about what you're in for when it comes to Wonder Flowers; It starts out normal with the only notable thing being the abundant amount of Piranha Plants with some popping out of their pipes and walking around. Then you pick up the Wonder Flower, the level becomes an auto scroller, the pipes start moving (Though not like the previous level)... and the Piranha Plants start singing.
Talking Flower: Ummmm... Are they...singing? They're singing.
    • This happens again in the level Light-Switch Mansion, but this time during a chase sequence with King Boo, Boos, and Noknoks.
  • The secret exit in "Bulrush Coming Through", at the end of its Wonder Effect, is ridiculously tall, taking several seconds for your character to slide down on.
  • There are a few levels with a unique goal pole that results in a "Course...Clear?," which has the usual victory jingle abruptly replaced with quiet percussion as the celebrating character suddenly looks around in confusion as they realize that there's no Wonder Seed or Poplin House in sight.
  • Maw-Maw Mouthful's Wonder effect turns the player characters into Goombas, which have to run/hide from the Maw-Maws. However, one part has a Maw-Maw positioned below the player at a gap in the floor, and timing your drop right means you get a Goomba to Goomba Stomp an enemy in a hilarious Russian Reversal.
  • To unlock the World 5 special level, you have to replay the level rescuing the miners. They get updated dialogue noting that they managed to get trapped in the exact same place again. The Talking Flower at the end of the level just... sounds so tired while apologizing.
  • Some enemies have hilariously unique methods of defeating them.
    • Mumsies are beaten by unraveling them via grabbing their handles.
    • Noknoks (the fake door enemies from the haunted house levels) are beaten by jumping on them to stun them, then "opening" them.
  • In the final boss stage, Bowser Jr. arrives at the start, telling you about his awesome new Wonder, powers up, the two Goombas stood either side of him growing gigantic, before giant fists kill the two Goombas and send him flying, Kamek frantically flying off the stage to rescue him. If you listen closely, Bowser Jr.'s grunts even sound like, "Uh oh!" when he realizes what's about to happen.
  • If you play as Peach for the final battle, Bowser eschews his usual dialogue at first in favor of welcoming "MY BELOVED!" to his rave. Peach's shocked reaction to this sells it.
  • If you use the Invisibility badge on the palace levels, Bowser Jr. will have a different reaction, from telling whoever you are playing as and Prince Florian to stop playing hide and seek with him to claiming that they're ghosts.
  • If a walking enemy gets stuck in a space where one block was broken between two others, it'll sit down and accept its fate being trapped in that one-block gap.
  • Pay close attention to the Goombas and you'll quickly realize that they go into a horrified expression just as you are about to stomp them.
  • There's a Wonder effect that requires you to answer a series of quiz questions that requires you to defeat the Taily matching the correct answer. One of the questions asks how many Goombas you've defeated. Unless you knew about the Poplin that keeps track of this number, you're almost guaranteed to get the question wrong.
  • When you hit the self-destruct switch at the end of each airship level, the conveyor malfunctions and reverses, causing a bunch of Bowser blocks to crash into the mechanical Bowser's mouth and forcing it wide open before it slumps over in "defeat".
  • Speaking of Boss-Arena Idiocy: The final battle against Bowser on a stage with an epic rock theme is certainly cool, but this time, the button is right on Bowser's chin, while the Wonder Effect is the stage itself boosting your jump if you time your jump right.
    • Even funnier, after hitting him enough times, his "hat" begins to crack, and reveals a colorful button. He seems to panic for a bit, then summons flying platforms so you can reach that button. The intro for his final phase only makes this even better.
    • Not as panicked as genuinely confused - he appears to have absolutely no idea what the button's for...until after you break it, at which point the panic legitimately sinks in.
  • What's your reward for beating the Brutal Bonus Level? The "Sound Off?" Badge, which turns the entirety of the sound design into human voices replicating them. It turns an already wacky game into an absurd romp, and it's a wonderful way to cleanse the palette after throwing yourself into the bonus level for who knows how long.
  • Bowser Jr. aggressively twerks at you in the cut scene preceding your second boss fight with him.
    Talking Flowers
Really, the Talking Flowers are an absolute gold mine of comedy.
  • One Talking Flower asks the player if they "ever wonder where snow comes from". You can give him the answer by touching the nearby Wonder Flower, which kicks up a heavy snowstorm that promptly smothers him.
"Oh this isn't good! This snow — [Muffled beneath snow block] It's burying meeeee!"
  • Muncher Fields features a Talking Flower using the glowing aura of a secret to play Super Saiyan. It's as gloriously silly as it sounds.
HrnghhhHHH! I can FEEL the powerrrr!
  • Many of the Talking Flowers have multiple lines of dialogue if you stick around for a bit. One, which appears towards the end of a stage, warns you that you shouldn't be standing around listening to him. Cue the destruction of the pre-goal pole staircase if you don't book it.
  • The Talking Flowers of "An Uncharted Area: Wubba Ruins" are all obsessed with wanting to taste the goo that surrounds the area. Funny on its own, but it gets cranked up once the level's Wonder effect turns you into a Wubba, with every Flower voicing their desire to taste you. And at the end, one of them succeeds.
    "*slurp* Mmm! Delicious!"
  • The Wonder Flower of "A Final Uncharted Area: Poison Ruins" turns you into a Wubba, which lets you crawl along the ceiling to bypass the main goal pole and continue to a new area. An overdramatic Talking Flower near the goal pole urges you:
"What lies beyond? I must know!"
  • The level "Wavy Ride through the Magma Tube" has a roulette block that cycles between a Talking Flower and the Wonder Flower. The fact that this roulette block exists is already hilarious on its own, but if it's hit while showing the Talking Flower, it appears from the block and says "Look at me! I'm the Wonder Flower!" The flower remains on the platform until it moves into the lava, which makes it jump out while saying "Eep, hot!" The Japanese version has it hilariously try to mimic the "WONDEEERR!" yell when a Wonder Flower is activated.
  • In "Piranha Plants on Parade", you can hit a Talking Flower growing on the ceiling. It will tell you to stop, getting more aggravated with each hit.
  • The first Talking Flower in the Parachute Cap badge course tells you to press R to use the Parachute Cap... and then wonders what R even is, anyway.
  • In "Angry Spikes and Sinkin' Pipes", standing on one sinking pipe causes a Talking Flower on it to comment that the pipe can't support both you and it. Ride the pipe all the way down and you and the Talking Flower fall down a long pit (which leads to the level's Wonder Flower), causing the Talking Flower to cry out that it warned you on the way down.
  • One in "Outmaway Valley" cheers you on to ride an iceblock kicked by the titular enemies. Knock it out, though, and the Talking Flower will whine about you being "no fun".
  • During the Wonder Effect in Fungi Mines Special: Dangerous Donut Ride, you and a flower are falling down a hole. You land safely on a platform in the middle of the hole. The flower falls offscreen and into the platformless poison in the hole's right side. The same thing happens after collecting the Wonder Effect's Wonder Seed in The Sharp Trial: Launch to Victory, except with a bottomless pit.
  • One has made friends with two enemies. Enemies which you need to defeat to get to a 10-Flower Coin. Its reaction is darkly humorous.
    "I'm all alone now."
  • One Talking Flower hides in a corner of "Bloomps of the Desert Skies", insisting that it's just hanging around. It's actually hiding a 1-Up Mushroom in a hidden block next to it, which you can steal to its horror.
  • In Robbird Cove:
  • The aforementioned Robbird Cove joke comes back in Downpour Uproar, with one of the Talking Flowers in that level supplying an answer that's bizarrely hilarious all on its own, thanks to them saying it in such an enlightened manner.
"They say the ocean tastes like tears."
  • If you ever decide to turn off the Talking Flower dialogue, there's an option for that in the options menu, indicated by the icon of the little guy. If you disable his speech, the icon starts speaking in reaction to that.
"Oh! Was it something I said?"
  • If you leave the Wonder Flower behind in "Welcome to the Flower Kingdom!", instead of a Talking Flower saying "Feel like you're missing something?" like in most of the other levels, a Talking Flower has this to say to you:
"Didn't you see something back there? You're just gonna leave?"
  • Jumping past the platform without touching the Wonder Flower in "Up 'n' Down with Puffy Lifts" has a Talking Flower whisper this to you:
    "I think you're forgetting something!"
  • One Talking Flower in "Armads on the Roll" gets oddly philosophical.
"All this sand... Why here? Why me?"
  • The Wonder Flower in "Valley Fulla Snootles" causes time to slow down and lowers the pitch of the music and sound. Including the Talking Flower's screaming.
