Even with the recent aftermath of Japan emerging defeated out of World War II, and the looming destruction of Godzilla, there are still a few moments that can get a chuckle.

  • Godzilla's first form in Odo Island looks quite menacing, but it can be an amusing detail how his dorsal fins seem to wobble loosely in their sockets instead of being fixed protrusions: probably as a Mythology Gag to the original Godzilla suit and its soft rubbery dorsal fins.
  • At Shikishima's house, Noriko and Akiko both fall asleep while Shikishima isn't looking. He's about to protest before he decides to just let these two stay for now.
  • Shikishima gets a minesweeping job in order to support Akiko, Noriko, and himself. Noriko thinks it's too risky, but Shikishima assures her that it doesn't guarantee death, saying that he'll be on a specially-designed boat best suited for the task. Gilligan Cut to the next day at the docks, with Shikishima looking stunned by the boat in question: a rickety old tugboat made of wood.
  • Akitsu, Noda, and Mizushima ribbing Shikishima about his relationship with Noriko and being general Shippers On Deck as they celebrate Shikishima’s new house.
    • In the same scene, Mizushima holds up his cup to get sake poured from Noriko. She seemingly doesn’t notice him, and he’s left awkwardly holding his cup until he finally gives up and quietly puts the cup down.
  • Shinsei Maru Captain Akitsu proudly proclaims he will fight to stall Godzilla in spite of the fact he hates taking orders from the Japanese government, because "someone has to do it". Then he sees Godzilla for the first time destroying their partner minesweeper boat and killing everyone on board. Naturally, Akitsu has the right idea to get themselves away.
    Captain Akitsu: Okay, never mind!
  • After getting the sea mine exploded in his jaws, Godzilla regenerates, and stands imposingly towards the Shinsei Maru, with the camera solely focusing on him and having a few seconds to prepare for a big Mighty Roar... just to be interrupted by a shell from the Takao that had just arrived.
  • As the meeting to discuss the plan to stop Godzilla starts to break down in arguments, Doctor Noda gets everyone's attention by trying to use the microphone...which yields harsh feedback that makes everybody present wince.
  • At the Godzilla planning meeting, it seems Doctor Noda has a tool at his disposal to stop Godzilla, with him gesturing at a covered box next to him. Audience members who know the original Godzilla are likely expecting, some even dreading, that the Oxygen Destroyer is back with no foreshadowing. Then he pulls off the cover to reveal...a glass tank with a little wooden Godzilla block and a few hoses to demonstrate a far more grounded plan of attack.
  • When Godzilla arrives for the climax, the distraction vessels are deployed to keep him busy and in place until the destroyers can arrive. Suddenly, we see a distraction boat go flying across the port and crash into some buildings, followed by the matter-of-fact report over the announcement system that the distraction vessels have failed only after everyone has already been made violently aware of this fact. Yes, thanks for the heads-up, sir.
  • Godzilla being waist-deep in water when he's explicitly over a 1,500 meter drop is a little amusing, given how often the franchise has played fast and loose with realistic depths and creature movement therein. Even knowing that it makes sense that with his long tail and extremely bottom-heavy legs he would be able to balance himself upright in the water if he so chose doesn't stop it looking like he's standing on something.
  • When Godzilla gets yanked down by the freon bubble as he's charging his atomic breath, it's a little amusing to see him yoinked below the waves in the middle of his big, badass moment. You can almost see him thinking "Whoa, dude! Not cool!" When he finally reaches the 1,500 meter depth, all the glow from his charging atomic breath just stops and there's a thunk as his fins retract, like someone flicked a switch to turn him off.
