  • The banter between Frank and Mary is always refreshing, if not downright funny.
    • Frank coaxes Mary out of her room on the first day of school by saying that he's made her "a special breakfast." In the next scene, she asks "Where's the 'special'?" To which Frank turns the box of cereal around to reveal it's Kellogg's "Special K". Mary's eye-roll takes the cake.
    • Frank's way of selling the idea of going to school to a seven-year-old kid? "You're gonna meet kids today you can borrow money from for the rest of your life."
    • This conversation between Frank and Mary:
Frank: You yelled at the principal. You know what? You're gonna find this interesting. So, I googled "first graders who yell at the principal..." and statistically, you're never gonna believe how many kids do it.
    Mary: How many?
    Frank: None.
  • Bonnie and Frank's drinking game, including this snippet:
Frank: Least favourite student. And why.
Bonnie: Oh, no. I love all my students.
    Frank: I don't believe you.
    [...]
Bonnie: I'm gonna go ahead and drink.
Frank: Let's keep this honest. He? She?
Bonnie: His name is Ronnie Middleton.
    Frank: Sounds like a dick.
Bonnie: He's a little child, okay?
    Frank: I'm sorry.
Bonnie: The point is that he's evil to the core.
  • When Frank tells Bonnie that his mother is British, she thinks he means it metaphorically until he says his mother is literally from England.
  • When Frank rhetorically asks, "Do I look gifted to you?" with reference to his intellectual ability, Bonnie looks down at him with probably a different idea of "gifted" in mind.
  • Mary catches Bonnie wearing nothing but a bedsheet, going from the bathroom to the bedroom in Frank's house. She looks surprised for a moment, before an impish grin spreads over her face and she sings out in an Ironic Echo, "Good mor-ning Ms Steven-son." Talk about choosing the wrong moment to show your teacher that you have learnt what she taught you.
    • A scene later, when Frank is alone with Mary for the first time after the incident with Bonnie, Mary's reaction is simply to say, "Awkward."
    • Later in the taxi, Bonnie sarcastically tells the driver to take her to jail.
    • In a later scene, Bonnie tells Frank that after the incident she had a series of nightmares where she's fired.
  • Frank's repeated attempt to tell his mother to go home, which she always ignores.
  • When Evelyn reveals her ex-husband has become a rancher in Montana, which Frank can't believe. She admits it would be easier to explain if he had left her for a younger woman.
